I bought a book titled "Best Tales of Texas Ghosts" by Docia Schultz Williams, published 1998 by the Republic of Texas Press and one chapter in the book is titled "REEVES THICKET'S RANCH HOUSE". The story is about a John Reeves, Sr. who came to Texas from Pikes County, Georgia in the early 1840's. I quote from this book "It is believed his wife probably died in childbirth, because Reeves came to Texas alone, leaving his father and oldest son, John Reeves, Jr., behind for quite some time. Finally, after John Sr. acquired considerable land holdings and established a law practice, he sent for his son, John, and his father to join him. John Jr. brought his wife, Cady, and their nine children with him. Later, another child, their tenth, William Worth Reeves, was born after they had settled into their new Texas home." And I further quote from this book: "Between Victoria and Goliad, off highway 59, there is a small community called Reeves Thicket. It used to be one huge ranch, but over the years the land has been subdivided and sold off in large lots where over 300 families reside today. The original ranch belonged to one man, John Reeves, Sr., from Georgia". The book says John Reeves was born 1779 and died in 1863. His grave is one of those in the rather sizeable Reeves Family Cemetery that sits on what is known as Reeves Hill today. The book states: "After a few years, John Jr. and his family moved to the banks of Coleto Creek, in the area now known as Reeves Thicket." John Reeves, Jr. died in 1868, and at that time, one of his sons, Jonathan, whom they called "Tobe" moved the family home from the banks of the Coleto Creek to its present location." unquote. Mrs. Williams' book is very interesting!! I found the above information interesting since this Reeves Family came from Georgia. My Reeves Grandparents came from Taylor and Talbot Counties, GA. and I continue to search for my line. My great grandfather, Thomas "Tom" Jefferson Reeves (1825-1875) had a son named "John Leonard Reeves, born ca. 1852, (Talbot County 1860 Census) whom I have never found a trace of since the 1860 Talbot census. My grandfather, Edward Lafayette Thomas Reeves, (son of Thomas Jefferson Reeves & brother to John Leonard Reeves), came to Texas 1904-05 and settled in Houston County, Texas and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery near Lovelady, Texas.
