    1. Reeves DNA : Next Step

    3. Hello to All, I wanted to inform everyone of the next step in the development of the Reeves DNA project. We are hoping to formulate a list of all known immigrant Reeves ancestors. We generally consider the Reeves surname to be English with perhaps an earlier origin in France. However, we do not have a good working list of first known Reeves throughout the world. We know that Reeves have emigrated from England to Virginia, New Jersey, Australia, Canada and perhaps Canada. We are asking all on the list to notify us of their earliest known Reeves ancestor. We also need the date and place where that ancestor was first documented. By documented, I mean when they show up as a land owner or on a census or tax list. We are looking for all first known Reeves throughout the world. We will hopefully be able to use this information to build a framework to form groups within the Reeves DNA study. I will ask that everyone email their response to the Reeves list. I appreciate everyone's help with this project. We now have 23 participants and have had several very close matches which have allowed us to form our first groups. This next step will hopefully allow us to involve more people in the Reeves DNA project and find the connections between us. Thanks for your help. David LeRoux

    1. MY first and only known Reeves

    3. Hi all Mary Reeves married Jonathan Squire, Weston, Fairfield CT 19 Nov 1775 at the Congregational Church. I originally came across her in Donald Lines Jacobus' book The History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield [CT]. He didn't have a clue to who she was. She was the third wife of Jonathan and they proceeded to have four children in Weston and baptized there. Darius bapt 6 Oct 1776 Mary bapt 10 Jan 1779 (??died young) Phineas-Reeves bapt 27 Aug 1780 Sarah bapt 14 Apr 1782 Then Jacobus says Jonathan resided in Fredericksburgh district Dutchess Co NY. 1783-1784. That's where my 3rd great grandfather, Bradley Squire was born Oct 1783. This area is now in Putnam Co NY to the best of my research. I have not found a baptism for Bradley and am still looking. Jonathan is dead by Dec 1784 and there is an almost 7 year gap where I can't find Mary and the kids. An older son by the first marriage stayed in NY Mary married Caleb Hendee Sr. (a big fish in a small pond:-) in Pittsford, Rutland, VT 30 June 1791. They had a son, Abner, born on 8 Aug 1792. There is no record of her death or burial that I have found so far. Caleb married her about six weeks after his first wife died (in childbirth I suspect) and his children of this marriage were extremely unhappy about it. Caleb Hendee was town clerk and a deacon in the Baptist church and thus this line of the Squire family became Baptists. Local histories of Pittsford state that both Mary Reeves Squire Hendee and Bradley Squire were from Manchester, [VT?]. Mary must have gone to some relative with her young children. Reeves?? Squire?? or?? A local genealogy guru told me there were REEVES on Long Island. This is just across the water from Fairfield. Haven't found any links. One thought is that Mary's father might be a Phineas, haven't found anything so far and haven't had time to look for some time. 3. My lineage goes back to Robert Ryves, b. 1490 in England, but linkage to all ancestors born prior to 1769 was documented by other researchers, and not me personally. Anyway, here is my line as best as I can trace it: Robert Ryves - b. 1490 - England John Ryves - b. 1514 - Blandford in Dorset, England Richard Ryves - b. 1547 - England Timothy Rives - b. 1588 - England William Ryves - b. 1636 - Woodstock, England - emigrated to America William Rives - b. 1689 - Probably VA William Reeves - b. 1723 - Granville County, NC Wiley Reeves - b. 4/27/1769 - Granville County, NC - I have personally documented my lineage from this point down. William Reeves - b. 7/7/1794 - York County, SC James Milton Reeves - b. 6/15/1824 - Jasper County, GA G. G. Reeves - b. 1/27/1865 - Crawford County, GA Rodolphus Wright Reeves - b. 1/13/1895 - Crawford County, GA - my father If anyone has documentation to connect Wiley Reeves b. 4/27/1769 to his father William Reeves b. 1723, I would be interested in hearing from them, as that would help me verify one more link in my lineage. I am also interested if anyone wishes to swap information with me on any of my ancestors from Wiley to the present.
