Beulah and Listers, My interest began for the George Reeves/Rives line of New Brunswick Co. Va. when I discovered that William Steele Reeves of that line was born in Pendleton Dist. S.C. ca. 1795.I wanted to learn more about this family since several of the men surrounding my Thompson Reeves was in the Pendleton Dist. S.C. about the same time. I wanted very much to see if Thompson may have had a close relationship with them in some way. George Reeves b. Jan 12, 1715/1716 married Mary Jordan. That is where the Jordan name came from. They gave birth to nine children. To tell my report I need to mention that George and Mary Jordan Reeves had a son named George Reeves b. 1767 He married for the first time Polly Steele. They gave birth to the one child William Steele. When William was a toddler his mother died. It seems that William's father,George, allowed his sister Charlotte to be a guardian for William Steele permanently. The father later remarried but there is no indication that William Steele ever returned to his father's home. Charlotte was about 17 years older than her brother George the father of William Steele. Charlotte was married to James Robertson. This couple were very active in working to protect the rights of others. Charlotte and James joined a group in migrating to the Tennessee area. They traveled down river with the men riding horses on the bank and the women manning the flatboats. There was great danger from Indians on this trip and when necessary the women put the children under the mattresses and used their oars to defend themselves against attack. They finally pulled onto land to end this journey in a place that is now present day Nashville TN.They built a fort and continued a dangerous adjustment to the surroundings Today there stands a statue to Charlotte Reeves Robertson near this spot.She was a brave and very spunky lady. When William Steele was mature he married and migrated to Arkansas for a few years. He had a son named George Robertson Reeves who married in Arkansas just prior to the group moving on to Texas near the Oklahoma and Texas border. Shortly after arrival George Robertson Reeves was employed as a book keeper for the local county or town. After 2 years he was elected as the County Sherriff for two terms. He then sought office as a Texas State Representative and was re-elected several times.When the Civil War began George Robertson Reeves enlisted and helped to organize a company to serve. After succuessful service in the Cival War he returned to the Texas State House of Representatives. At the end of one session when he returned home he was bitten by his own dog and died from the effects of the bite.When the legislature opened again it was discussed that in West Texas there was a county that was much too large and sprawling. It was decided it was needed to be cut in half and have a new county created. It was decided also that the new county would be named Reeves County in honor of George Robertson Reeves. Interesting family.I had a correspondence with a lady from Sherman, Texas who was descended from George Robertson Reeves.
