Don't know how many of you intend to watch the upcoming, 10-part series on PBS called "Ancestors" but I emailed our local PBS affiliate here in Rapid City, SD recently and I received not only the airing schedule (Sunday afternoons @ 2:30 pm, Bill Reynolds!) but they sent me a sheet that gives a synopsis of each of the 10, hour-long episodes. I've decided to post each episodes' description on the Friday before it airs (check w/ your local affiliate for airing schedules in your locale). Here what they wrote about episode #1: ____________________________________________________________________ "GETTING STARTED--Due to the taunting of classmates in Southern California, Victor Villasenor grew up ashamed of his Mexican-American heritage. Years later, awaiting the birth of his first child, he wondered about his family's stories. Were they truth or fiction? His journey to the past unveiled a rich legacy, of which he is justifiably proud. This episode dispels common misconceptions about genealogy and introduces the pedigree chart as one of the most important tools used in searching for ancestors. Expert Desmond Walls Allen explains that the first step in discovering family history is as simple as starting with yourself and what you already know." ____________________________________________________________________ Speaking of family history on television, I'm pleased to announce that later on this year (also on PBS), a documentary is scheduled to air on the Sultana steamship disaster of April 1865. The steamship exploded just north of Memphis, TN killing most of the 1800 formerly imprisoned Union soldiers she was transporting northward to home. My own GGG uncle, Lt. Thomas B. Reeves, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry was killed in the disaster. I've been approached by documentary producer Ron Farmer about using a tintype photo of Tom that my family owns in the documentary and even giving Lt. Tom Reeves a fair amount of air-time in the documentary! Pretty neat, huh?
