    3. Several years ago when visiting in Belfast, we toured the St. Ann's Cathedral which is a Church of Ireland (basically same as Church of England or I think that is Episcopalian). Back stage is a large painting of a Bishop Reeves (his name and photo are buried somewhere in a closet in my home) who served that area. We were told this is the church in Belfast where the Queen worships when she is in the Belfast area. I've not done a serious study on the Reeves of Ireland but have done enough to know there were three brothers originally who came to the Dublin area. Their careers - one was like an Attorney General appointed by King Charles (if my memory is working correctly), another was a prominent lawyer in the Dublin area and there was some mention of some of these brothers dwelling in someone's castle in the Dublin area. Also mention that one of the brothers may have been clergy which fits with the Belfast finding. Also, found the Reeves Castle properties in the Republic of Ireland in the West - also known as Castle Jane. I understand the only remains are a bridge labeled Castle Jane, a cemetery on the Reeves property with recognizable burial monuments and some servant quarters from the castle era still existing. If there are questions on what I've touched, I have more data someplace in my stuff and might be able to get a few answers. 3. Here is a Reeves who might be of interest to someone. I know nothing about him or his family....just found it accidentally. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com:80/Hennepin_Canal_Photos.html November 22, 1907 1;2 BOATS NAVIGATE THE CANAL Rambler in Charge of Engineer Reeves Makes Trip Through The Feeder to Sterling The first canal boat to navigate the canal feeder arrived at “Port Tampico” the highway bridge due east of here Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock with a former Tampico young man, civil engineer H. E. REEVES, in charge. A large number of Tampico citizen were at the bridge and gave a mighty shout as the boat hove in sight around the curve in sight just below the railroad bridge and the dozen Tampico people who had been below this bridge and boarded the boat on the invitation of engineer REEVES waved their handkerchiefs and answered with a hurrah. The boat was the Rambler which was pushed by a large gasoline launch. The Rambler is a fifty foot inspection boat fitted up on the plan of a house boat. In the front is the office and living rooms, back of this is the berths, dining room and kitchen. Accompanying Engineer REEVES on the first trip over the canal were his wife and baby, a young lady and a crew of two men, all of whom have commodious quaarters and enjoyed the trip from Rock Island here very much. The Rambler tied up at the bridge here Monday night and proceeded to that place after an uneventful voyage at 12:25 o’clock. Engineer REEVES while here Monday night was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Fred BREWER. Mr. REEVES’ parents formerly resided three miles east of Tampico and he spent his early manhood in this vicinity and of course had many friends who were especialy glad to welcome him as the first person to navigate the canal. Speaking about the trip from Rock Island here Mr. REEVES said that as soon as the Marion completed the voyage on the main canal and got into Rock Island, The Rambler started east on the canal until she reached the **************** the soundings showed depths varying from five and one haff feet to seven. The shallowest place was in the aquaduct over Green River where the water is only five and one half feet deep. In some places progress was slow on account of large patches of “seaweed” but altogether the trip was a very successful one and it shows that the realization of the dreams of Tampico people have come true, that boats can and will go up and down the canal and that the “big ditch” will be a feature in the world’s transportaion. ~~~~~~~~~ There is more to the article online.

    3. To all in Group 6.- Hello Cousins?? I am Charles Mercer Reeves. We apparently have a high probability of connecting lines . And through the Henry Reeves lineage. Family tradition has us coming from the William Ryves line. I know very little about Henry Reeves b 1630 d 1710. Please provide me with any documentation you may have regarding your line and it's connection to Henry Reeves. My ggggrandfather is John D(Dourdan) Reeves b abt 1759 in Halifax Co NC d 1840 in Surry Co NC. Micajah Rawls in will dated 29th Jan 1778 in Halifax Co mentions his brothers John and Jesse Reves(probably half brothers). In his Rev War Pension testimony taking place in 1833 John D indicates that he was born in Halifax NC. He also testifies he enlisted and reenlisted twice in Halifax NC substituting for William? Brantley and Nathan Spees presumably of Halifax Co . He married about 1788 in Cumberland Co NC Sallie Locke Elwell. His first son Richard Elwell Reeves probably the line that Billy Fred Reeves descends from was born in Cumberland . He witnesses documents for his in-laws in Cumberland with his X. Billy Fred Reeves is also participating in the Reeves DNA project matching almost perfectly with me . John D further mentions in his testimony a Bible at home which has been lost. John D moved to Surry County from Cumberland abt 1792 buying a farm in 1804. A Polly Reeves witnessed a document for him in Surry Co. She does not show up in the family tree as Polly so possibly she could be a sister. I have found no other documentation of John D Reeves ancestry. However I am excited with the current developments in Reeves DNA project. We are having a Reeves gathering in Siloam, Surry Co, NC in the fall and I will recruit more DNA participants. 3. My cousin and I have been doing interviews for over 20 years of our family members as well as Senior Citizens of our county to preserve not only our family history but different parts of the county as well. We have interviewed well over a hundred people. We have published 7 books with 15 to 17 interviews per book. But I would like to give you some advice on what to ask your family that you may find valuable in years to come. We always ask where each family member was born, who they were named after, who their neighbors were, stories they have heard about the Civil War, who were their teachers in school, who were their great-great grandparents on all sides and where they came from, home remedies, what caused the deaths of close family members ( this could be valuable in years to come because of inherited diseases), where they are buried. If they lived in a small community when they were growing up, we always ask who the local merchants were at that time. We ask if any of the family members had any special talents ( cooking, playing the fiddle, etc.) Then, we always ask for any funny stories the families have past down. But we also let the interviews be spontaneous. I hope this may be of some help to you. Sue Chrisco

The day I bought one I went to the nursing home but she thought I was one of her sisters. I couldn't be Carole because I was only 7 years old. 3. Yes.. it draw me into confusion a bit.. My line s from Isaac Reeves of NC.. through peter and joshua reeves.. yet Isaac descenants are in both groups 3 and 6.. i would imagine that either the two groups are closer than shown.. or individuals are in the wrong cluster.. -----Original Message----- From: reeves-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:reeves-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Barry Reeves Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2007 12:16 PM To: reeves@rootsweb.com Subject: [REEVES] Reeves DNA Project Website Update All, I hope everyone in the U.S. had a GREAT July 4th. I just wanted to give you an update on our DNA project. We have received new results for John Reeves (87479) and he has matched with group 6. We also had one new person to join our group - James Revis (93346). I also wanted to make you aware of a significant change that I made to the groups. Based upon their close similarities, I have combined Groups 6, 10 and 11 into one group (Group 6). This is primarily based upon FTDNA identifying them as close matches (off by one or two markers). If you look at the differences within the first 25 markers, you will see that most are different only in the markers that normally mutate over time anyway. There are a couple of exceptions to this and I am looking at those closer. I realize that some of the people in that group have submitted family lines that at first glance don't appear to support what the DNA results show. However, there are several people in Group 6 that have not submitted their family line information at all yet. This makes it very difficult to see how the members may be related. I highly encourage those members that have not yet submitted your family line information to do so as soon as possible. I realize that by combining these groups, a few people may feel that the family line information they submitted may be in question if it doesn't seem to fit in with the others. This is not my intent at all and hopefully nobody will get upset if it may appear that their family line is out-of-sync with the rest. That doesn't mean your line is wrong. It just means that we may have some more work to do to understand why there are differences and what those differences could mean. I encourage everyone in Group 6 to take a close look at their information and compare it to the others in their group. You may be surprised at the new connections that it may suggest. Another change that I made is to identify markers 26 through 37 by highlighting them in grey. I did this primarily to visually separate them from the first 25 markers since that will be as far as most people will ever take their test. As always, I want to thank everyone for their support of the Reeves DNA Project. Although we have discovered many things so far, we still have a long way to go. 1. Re: [REEVES] Google searches without having to remember the search para...
    2. I received this through the SC List. I haven't had time to work with it but he said we were free to pass it on so good luck researching for that elisive ancestor. I will give it a try soon. Beulah Wow, I was stunned by the amount of email I have received so far in reponse to my post last night about how to create powerful searches with Google. At last count I had a little over 60 emails with thanks and questions. Some people were a little confused by the depth of what is possible. All along I had been planning on creating a web page for my own use to do the work for me. No more having to remember all the little ins and outs of the parameters. As of yesterday I had never gotten around to it. But, now with so many people obviously interested in this I went ahead and created a simple page for searches using all of the techniques that I mentioned last night. There are several different search boxes for each of the types of searches I discussed earlier. All you have to do is figure out which one you want to use, enter your search term and press the search button. The address is: http://bluntrazor.com/search.html The page is very plain looking. I'll be out of town through Tuesday, but when I get back I'll gussy it up some and add more explanations and search methods so the page is more helpful. I always take anything on the internet that I haven't researched myself with a grain of salt. I tend to think of internet information as a guide to let me know where I need to be looking until I prove for myself what I find out there. So, please remember to question everything you find until you can prove it yourself. There are far too many people out there who will gobble down anything they find on the internet as fact when sometimes it isn't. Also, as I said before, these Google search results are not 100% complete. Google tries to index every single web page it can get access to, but it can't catch them all. I have found this to be true when I get results from the genealogy.com forums. Google has a lot of the posts indexed, but not all of them. So, always double check the sites first hand instead of relying solely on Google. There are also ways to prevent Google or any other spider from getting access to certain files. I use this on my own web site to keep certain things private to family members or certain fellow researchers. Others use these privacy methods to keep their sites from getting bogged down with spiders crawling through their databases. Thank you all for your kind comments and I wish you luck in your research. Feel free to pass this along. Regards Greg Matthews ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Many of the old folks will tell you they can't tell you anything but if you start looking through their old picture albums it all comes back to them. They may not remember what they had for breakfast (like me) but the old memories are still in there. My uncle told me he didn't know why I brought along a recorder because he didn't know anything. Once he got started he talked for 90 minutes straight. Wonderful old stories! I'm just sorry I didn't have a recorder while my grandma was still telling stories. The day I bought one I went to the nursing home but she thought I was one of her sisters. I couldn't be Carole because I was only 7 years old. It wasn't a complete loss because I did find out she if she went back to the home place she could run the whole ranch by herself. We had a talk about what that involved before she got tired her mind wandered off. One thing....don't start off aking any questions about family secrets or things that might be embarrassing. 1. Re: [REEVES] Reunion of Reeves
    2. I hope you will encourage some of them to join our DNA Project. We need to make more matches. Reunions is a great time to do this. Please mention it to one and all. If someone wants more information please give them my email or Barry's and we will be glad to help them. When you attend reunions it means you are interested in family and what better way to show interest than to join the Project to help prove your heritage. Start a family project with some doing book work others joining the DNA Project and others doing leg work by going to court houses, archives etc. Think how much fun the next reunion will be with all the info coming in. Also the folklore. The older ones telling of their grandparents and ggrandparents. The bases of a great web site also Let's all remember as we take our vacations to pick up a little information about the family. Take a tape recorder and tape what the older ones are talking about, you might even pick a recipe for grandma's caramel cake.............. I wish we had done that many years ago. Now those things are gone forever. As we travel around this summer just remember it is surprising what you can do in a short period of time, and how much it will mean to you years later. I have recently discovered a new line of REEVES from Henderson County TN. Some of the family has invited me to a reunion at Natchez Trace State Park this Sunday on 8 July. I have tried to link them into my REEVES Branch (Richard E Reeves) but they have not targeted any of my ancestors that put-down roots in Henderson County. Looking through all US Census Records I found the earliest one in 1850 to be AP Reeves Female Head of Household. She was born abt 1810. The reunion is the descendants of John Buchanan (Buck) Reeves. I have not been able to progress back beyond his mother with a definite link. I will paste the earliest record. I would certainly appreciate any assistance from anyone that may have any information. I found several REEVES in Henderson County TN around this period but have not been able to establish a link to Buck or Richard Reeves. Prior to 1850 there is Drury, John, Richard E and John H Reeves. When I built this brief tree I had not noticed that A P Reeves was a female. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [REEVES] Asking for informtion
    2. Tommie Smith
    3. I missed many opportunities for obtaining information about family from elders when I was younger. However I did have older sisters and and first cousins who were more than willing to help me if they could. For example we had the picture of the Grandparents Home. They had fourteen children who lived to adulthood. I had questions about the floorplan for such a house with that many people. I was told that the big house actually had four huge rooms The kitchen had room for two full size beds plus the area for cooking and eating. The parents and the youngest children slept here. The sitting room also had two full size beds as did the other two rooms. I wondered how they cooked for so many people every day. That answer was a little vague but soups and beans and corn bread were involved sometimes. Sometimes supper was a matter of buttermilk and cornbread. The cornbread was often crumbled in a bowl or glass and buttermilk was poured over it. When an elder is speaking about the home and food you can also ask something like How many of the children were born while they lived in this house? You would be surprised how many memories can be released when they begin to think of old times. We need to heed Beulah's advice. It is good. To Billly, you are very wise to the situation in Henderson, TN. I am glad you can attend the reunion. Give us a shout when you get back. I have no research of my own in that area. Tommie Smith
