Hello All, I'm very frustrated with my Reeves, as I've been at a dead end for years. I have two REEVES in the family who are likely from the same line, but I can't say for sure. People keep saying my REEVES must fit into the George REEVES and Mary JORDAN line from Brunswick, Virginia. I agree but can't find the connection. Any help is truly appreciated. Here's how my direct line goes: Fourth great-grandmother is: Sarah REEVES, b. Jun 18, 1796 in Milledgeville, McNairy Co., TN Married Charles SPENCER, abt. 1813 in Hickman, Co., TN Parents: UNKNOWN; Father, George REEVES?; Brother, George REEVES? My line is through Nancy SPENCER BINGHAM (divorced and changed name back to SPENCER) Nancy SPENCER's husband, Redden BINGHAM was a REEVES decedent. Winifred REEVES was Redden's Grandmother. Winifred was my sixth Great Grandmother: Winifred REEVES (sometimes Winefred REEVS or RIEVES), b./d. UNKNOWN, Where: UNKNOWN Parents: UNKNOWN Married: Alexander BINGHAM, Feb 02, 1797 in Davidson Co., TN Marriage Bondsmen: Alexander BINGHAM and John BOSLEY Winifred had at least one child in Hardin Co., TN; may have had a child in Virginia before move to Maury Co., TN Thanks, Shelley Shelley Janiczek Woodson

Hi, Brian. All the information I have on George William Reeves I gathered from your site about two months ago. You answered one of my inquiries on Nov.25, 2007 and sent your website link then, so I gratefully grabbed all I could from your notes and posted it to my family tree. You have done some great research. Here's a little additional info on William Harrison Reeves that I have in my records: . William Harrison Reeves stands pre-eminent among the energetic citizens of Paducah. His parents removed from Halifax County, VA., and settled near Richmond, in Madison County, KY., in the early part of the present century, and there William H. was born, in 1814.. George Reeves, his father , was a soldier under Gen. Harrison in the war of 1812, and in consequence of his admiration for his veteran commander, gave the name to his son. William H. was left an orphan when a mere lad, and also dependent on his own efforts for sustenance, which prevented his obtaining even a common school education. His first effort at self-support was a position on a keel boat on the Green River. When eighteen years old he came to the Purchase and located in what is now Ballard County. Having an elder brother (Jesse B.) in that vicinity, he made his home with him until the brother's death, which occurred a few years later. Here William H. engaged in the lumber traffic for a time, then operated a woodyard for a period of six years, and then opened a small general store in the interior of Ballard County. After four years he sold this business, and in 1840 was made county constable, from which time he was for many yeas engaged in the official business of the county, either in the office of constable or sheriff. Though beginning life without means, he soon accumulated a handsome fortune, and gradually developed into one of the most substantial farmers and traders of western Kentucky. Mr. Reeves has ever been noted for his stern and unflinching integrity and fidelity to any public or private trust, and while he has been largely connected with the public weal of his section, he has been also intrusted with the adjustment of many private estates and with he guardianship of orphaned children. For many years, he has been a member of the Masonic order and of the I.O.O.F. He was first married in Ballard County, in 1843, to Miss Penelope White, daughter of Rev. Willis White, now of Clinton, Ky. She died in February, 1879, leaving a family of seven children: Mary A., wife of Dr. Charles Hinkle, of Ballard County; George W.., now of Montana; Susan J., wife of Hon William J. Pucket; W. T. Reeves, a lawyer of Blandville; Martha, wife of W.W. Morris (my great grandmother); Fannie B., wife of William O. Coffin, of Illinois, and Robert L. Reeves, of Paducah. CENSUS: 413-413 W. H. Listers, We realize that the testing of DNA costs some money. What serveral people have done is ask the family to share. If you have several siblings or cousins and the required direct line male who will give the specimen others can help in this way. If you take the available help from the Reeves DNA fund that is offered and then ask siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles to chip in about $10 to $ 15 dollars or whatever they can afford it makes it easier on everyone. Before you know it you have enough. The person who gives the DNA is never required to give all the money. Just consider that idea. Good luck to you. Tommie
I would be glad to share what info I have. However, I think we are talking about two different John Reeves & two different Manerva J's. My John Reeves was in the 1860 census in Marion Co, Prarie Township. I think your John Reeves and Manerva Jane was in the 1860 Izard Co, Bear Creek Township. However, his son Green Reeves was around your line of Reeves a lot. In fact Joshua Reeves - your John Reeve's brother - went to Missouri during the Civil War & administered to Green Reeves wife that died in Springfield while Green was in the Union Army. I am trying to get a cousin to have her brother do the DNA testing but it is a little expensive for her to do that. I forwarded her the email regarding the help that she maybe able to get from the DNA project with the cost but not sure if her email is still correct. My Reeves ancestors are: 1) J.W. Reves or Reeves (possibly James) born 1873 (possibly Texas or Arkansas), married 1898 in Little River County, AR to Sarah K. Bogan. J.W.'s mother was named Emelia aka. "Mellie". The only information I have besides a marriage certificate is oral family history which states he was a tall, blue eyed Frenchman. On J.W.'s marriage certificate he states he was from "Winthrop", Arkansas which is in Little River County. J.W. is not found on any 1900 census living with his wife, Sarah and daughter, Emelia Ann (born in 1900 in Hempstead County, AR). My Grandfather, William Thomas Reeves was born in Little River County, AR in 1902. J.W. died shortly about 1903. All we know is that he was supposedly shot by a gunman somewhere in Southwest Arkansas or Indian Territory. Research of newspaper articles in Arkansas at that time, has turned up nothing so far on this "fact". There is a John Reeves born 1815 in North Carolina living in Jackson Township, Sevier County (later became Little River County) in 1850 and 1860. I can locate no further information on him, but suspect he was related to our Reeves. My J.W. was from Jackson Township also. No children are shown on the census records belonging to this John Reeves. This John Reeves may have married a Nancy Green in Sevier County about 1857. No further information. Emelia divorced J.W.'s father sometime after J.W. was born and remarried some years later to a Mr. Jones of Nacogdoches, TX where they lived around 1914. To my knowledge, there were no siblings to my J.W. Reeves ever mentioned, therefore we have no idea if there were other children of the union of Mr. Reeves and Emelia "Mellie" who were probably married sometime around 1870-1872. Pretty much dead ends on all counts, but I've worked on this for over 12 years. Carole **************Start the year off right. Someone asked yesterday the cost of the DNA test and what was involved. It is very simple. They just have to scrub their cheek on each side for a minute with a little brush and then place the brush in a vial and mail it back to the FTDNA project. This is done twice with two different brushes at least 24 hours apart. . All the instructions come with the package. It is very simple. My 93 year old cousin did it for me with the help of his daughter. He died a few months after that and you don't know how grateful I was that he agreed to do it. It was a wonderful gift to leave to the Reeves family. The cost is very reasonable when you go through the projects instead of having it done individually. They still let the projects have the 25 marker test which costs $150.00. In my opinion that test will match others in the same line. We can help two or three with half the cost of the 25 marker test, which is $75.00 each. Any further testing will have to be your responsibility. We need to test as many Reeves as we can find to have this done. Help us find matches for those that haven't found one . You may be the one. All you have to do is contact Barry and he will set it up for you. I was surfing on the Rootsweb today and found a link that some of you might like to check out. It mentions a Reeves family from New Jersey and CT. that lists an Abijah b. 1750 and other Reeves. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sg2kpuy/reeves/ Hope some find it interesting.
