    2. Mac, I have a great Uncle who decends from Elizabeth Ellar Reeves (b. Omaha) line. The uncle was living in Colorado at the time of his mtoher's death. I'd like to know more about what became of him and if he has any decendents. His last name would be Quinn as his mother was a Reeves. Let me know if you run across any connections there and if you have any suggestions for tracking him down. Barbara Tracy Langdon blangdon@aol.com ------------------------------

    1. Reeves in Burlington Co., NJ
    2. Mac Carlson
    3. Hello all, Contrary to most of you (who I see mostly having Reeves' in TN, KY, SC, etc.) my Reeves branch lived in Burlington Co., NJ. Am I alone? I will detail my line. My first documented Reeves ancestor (though I know of Reeves' back to about 1680 in Burlington) was Joseph J., an innkeeper in Pemberton, Burlington Co., NJ. He was born in Burlington County on 5 June 1804, married Susanna Ewen on 20 Oct. 1825, and died on 5 June 1884, his eightieth birthday. His wife Susanna was born 15 January 1808 in Pemberton, the daughter of William and Rebekah (Scroggy) Ewen, and died 16 Feb. 1886. Joseph and Susanna's children (all born in Pemberton) were: William (b. 1828), Sarah Gaskill (my ancestor--b. 1831), Mary (b. 1837), Sophia (b. 1839), Susanna (b. 1842), Emma (b. 1843), Joseph J. II (b. 1848), John Henry (b. 1850), and Kate (b. 1852). Is anyone else researching New Jersey Reeves'? -Mac Carlson ------------------------------

    1. REEVES, JAMES, SARAH AND VICTORIA, 1800s, TN
    2. I don't have much on my REEVES and hopefully someone out there has connections to the little bit I do have. My gg grandmother was Victoria REEVES, b. May 23, 1849 d. April 30, 1888 in Benton Co, TN. The 1850 Census lists her place of birth as TN but I don't know where. She married Alexander A. ADAMS b. 1844, Benton Co., TN d. Jun 16, 1910 in Benton Co, TN. They were married on Jan 17, 1867 in Benton Co. According to the census and marriage records her parents were James R. REEVES (b. cir. 1831 TN) and Sarah Ann HERRON (b. cir. 1835 TN). They were married on Sep 12, 1844 in Carroll Co, TN. which is probably where Victoria was born. Other children in the 1870 Carroll Co, TN census were Mary (9) and Alvin (10/12). There were other REEVES on the census but I do not know if any were connected. If any of you are from the Memphis, TN area you may remember Lt. Pat Adams giving the weather report from the helicopter over the radio. Victoria was his mother. If anyone know anything about this James please let me know. Let me know if any of these other heads of households from Carroll Co in 1870 sound familiar and I will give you the rest of the family's names. William C. (27) SC - wife July (20) SC N. G. (37) SC - wife Jane A (26) SC Robert (22) SC - wife Sarah (20) TN (also lists an Elizabeth (70) SC) Hope to make connections. Cathy Hilliard Hoover ------------------------------

Instead, I was simply hoping to avoid a problem that has beleagured other mailing lists and rendered them essentially useless! The "problem" of quoting irrelevant portions of other's messages and them broadcasting the entire (unnecessarily long) message back onto the list is far from being serious on our list, but I'd like to keep it from getting out of hand! Sorry everyone for appearing impatient, I'll work on being more tactful w/ future suggestions/admonishments! <grin> >Also Greg, if I did send a message to the newgroup at roots.com, how >can I be certain that the message was received? I've struggled w/ this too Dan, sometimes it seems that our messages just disappear into the blackness of "cyberspace" and the worry is only increased when no one at all responds to a post you've made. I've had that happen before too. However, in virtually all cases, your post *WAS* duly received and distributed to the other subscribers. If you're a subscriber, you'll know if other list subscribers received your post if you receive your own posted message right back in your mailbox w/the header info shown from the Rootsweb.com server! Hang in there--if it seems no one is responding, maybe it's because you're way ahead of us in researching a particular REEVES line, or that your post was sufficiently detailed as to require greater study (and time)! 1. A word on "quoting" and/or "replying to"...
    2. Greg Reeves
    3. Not intending to appear the strict disciplinarian, but... A recent but unfortunate feature of our new REEVES mailing list is the "replying to" or "quoting" of other's messages either preceeding or following your own intended message/post. The most insideous examples occur where one quotes an ENTIRE POST (3-6 paragraphs, mostly irrelevant to the thread's direction) made by someone else, then adds a brief 2-3 sentences afterward that says little more than "me too." We've not quite reached that extreme yet, but, in my judgement, we're getting there pretty fast! Too fast... It came to my attention today that while we've added about 16 subscribers since we began, we've also lost (for whatever reason) about 6. Sure, we're growing, but I wonder if some of those that have chosen to "unsubscribe" (some were veteran Internet genealogists) aren't doing so out of (partial) frustration? I may well be the worst culprit. Several times I've "Replied to all," edited out the irrelevant portions, and mailed the message (thinking: directly to one person) only to learn, aghast, that I'm "replying" not only to that individual, but to the entire REEVES-L list. At least I eliminated the irrelevant portions of the message I quoted. Still, I'm sorry... Clearly, an advantage to E-mail is the ability to reply. Methinks, however, the feature was built-into E-mail apps with limited use in mind. It can *very quickly* become annoying when used indiscriminately in newsgroup/mailing-list threads. So... Let's agree right now to at least "edit out" those irrelevant portions of a post we're replying to, okay? Besides saving "bandwidth," we're showing others who must pay for every minute they're on the 'Net the courtesy of respecting their time and money... 'Nuf said... Those natural "growing pains" aside, I think we're maturing rather gracefully, don't you'all? (And how can we re-attract those Internet veterans who once were subscribers and have so dang much to contribute?) Greg Reeves REEVES-L Listowner greg@rapidnet.com ------------------------------

    3. I would like help with finding where my ancestor, William Joseph Reeve, came from in England. What year did he immigrate? Why did he immigrate? Who were his parents? Who were his brothers/sisters? Here is what I know about William Joseph Reeve. Born 10/11/1831 in England. Died 2/22/1902 in IL at Cornell. Married Sarah Wilson (born in Ohio 11/22/1839) When did he marry her? Sarah died 12/2/1904 at Cornell, IL. Children (they were busy): Clarissa born 1857 Alfred born 1859 Will born ?? Frank born 1864. Died Cornell, IL Linc or Leman born 1866. Died Streator, IL Bert or Albertis born 1872 Charles Lester (my ancestor) born 11/12/1873 in Chatsworth, IL died 10/12/1932 in Ligonier, IN Flo born 1878 Lucy born 1876 Clinton born 1880 I have a complete list of information about Charles Lester Reeve and his children. I do not know much more significant about the other brothers/sisters but I would like to find ancestors of these people and share information and photos. I do have photos but most are unidentified except for Charles Lester Reeve. I would also like to know if any brothers came over with William Joseph. I do have some clues that I will share with interested persons. Does anyone know of Charles L. T. Reeve? I have a federal land purchase for 2 years for him in Peoria, MI. I believe the year was 1815. Thank you for your help. Interestingly on the Census sheets, these people are Reeve one decade and Reeves the next. ------------------------------

    1. Upcoming PBS "Ancestors" Episode
    2. Greg Reeves
    3. Don't know how many of you intend to watch the upcoming, 10-part series on PBS called "Ancestors" but I emailed our local PBS affiliate here in Rapid City, SD recently and I received not only the airing schedule (Sunday afternoons @ 2:30 pm, Bill Reynolds!) but they sent me a sheet that gives a synopsis of each of the 10, hour-long episodes. I've decided to post each episodes' description on the Friday before it airs (check w/ your local affiliate for airing schedules in your locale). Here what they wrote about episode #1: ____________________________________________________________________ "GETTING STARTED--Due to the taunting of classmates in Southern California, Victor Villasenor grew up ashamed of his Mexican-American heritage. Years later, awaiting the birth of his first child, he wondered about his family's stories. Were they truth or fiction? His journey to the past unveiled a rich legacy, of which he is justifiably proud. This episode dispels common misconceptions about genealogy and introduces the pedigree chart as one of the most important tools used in searching for ancestors. Expert Desmond Walls Allen explains that the first step in discovering family history is as simple as starting with yourself and what you already know." ____________________________________________________________________ Speaking of family history on television, I'm pleased to announce that later on this year (also on PBS), a documentary is scheduled to air on the Sultana steamship disaster of April 1865. The steamship exploded just north of Memphis, TN killing most of the 1800 formerly imprisoned Union soldiers she was transporting northward to home. My own GGG uncle, Lt. Thomas B. Reeves, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry was killed in the disaster. I've been approached by documentary producer Ron Farmer about using a tintype photo of Tom that my family owns in the documentary and even giving Lt. Tom Reeves a fair amount of air-time in the documentary! Pretty neat, huh? 1. REEVES in Western NC
    2. I am looking for any information on REEVES in western NC. I have basically one sheet of paper that states Larkin REEVES had a son Larkin, who had a son Fidelio Ferdinand REEVES( 16th NC Inf Regiment in Civil War), who had a son Maynard Ferdinand REEVES. Mostly they stayed in NC, but some moved back and forth to Tennessee. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ------------------------------

    3. Privacy on the net seems fleeting to me anyway...have you checked out www.switchboard.com? Look yourselves up! I found my fathers address and phone, and he lives on a dirt road along a rural route in South Georgia. 1. Re: Q: A repository for "REEVES" GEDCOM's...?
    2. I, too, like the idea of a "repository". My only problem is that I, being a "bear of little brain", have not yet successfully transmitted a GEDCOM file by email. I have just about given up on the idea. I cannot even use the "reply" forms on the WWW- after filling in the information, typing a note, I hit send and nothing has ever happened. I do dislike the idea of being limited in finding my REEVES because of personal or system limitations. Pollyana Brown ------------------------------

    1. Re: Q: A repository for "REEVES" GEDCOM's...?
    2. Greg; I think your idea for a repository for Reeves family files is a great idea. I too respect and appreciate the individual desire for privacy, but I personally try to balance that almost instinctive desire against my need to find out more about my ancestors. If I am too private, I will be cutting myself off from a potentially valuable source of info. The idea you propose is in effect many places off line already, such as FTM's CD-ROM disks, published family histories, etc. Also, each of us when we send a query to a newsgroup divulges a small amount of personal into. I would personally like to participate in your shared repository, should you decide to go forward with it, and will contribute my own family history file, as modest as it is at present. One suggestion: why not limit access to the file to those who have contributed files? This has been done elsewhere, and is a fair way to proceed - those who wish to use the bridge to our shared past will have the privilege of helping to build it. This will also stimulate a more rapid pace of contributions. Thanks for your generous offer - I hope others will agree with the idea. rreeves204@aol.com ------------------------------

    1. REEVES in Western NC
    2. First of all, I apologize for the mistaken mass mailings I may have sent. I am new at this, and will do better! I am trying to find out all I can about the following REEVES, most of whom stayed in NC or moved back and forth to Tennessee. Larkin REEVES had a son Larkin REEVES, who had a son Fidelio Ferdinand REEVES (16th NC Regiment in War Between the States), who had a son Maynard Ferdinand REEVES. This is about all I have since all of this came from one single sheet of paper that was passed on. Not sure who Larkin's father was, or really any details of any of these folks. I would appreciate any info that might be available. Thanks.... ------------------------------

    2. I think it would be great. I am new at online stuff, so I am still stumbling along. Now for a question, when I get email about the REEVES', is this just to me, or to a wide mailing list. I don't want to be insulting by ignoring a request, so usually respond that I will keep it in mind as I dig deeper. Is this correct,or am I creating undue traffic? Thanks...Ken ------------------------------

    1. Q: A repository for "REEVES" GEDCOM's...?
    2. Greg Reeves
    3. Hi All! We're up now to 48 subscribers; up 8 in just the last few days! The "activity" too has been really insightful, don't you think? I'm aware that some of you already now are pursuing leads together "offline" (meaning directly, but *not* on the REEVES-L list). I think that's **GREAT** but let's keep one thing in mind: while we're all clearly not interested in the same REEVES lines (and we therefore *should* refrain from filling up other's mailboxes with irrelevent posts), we also shouldn't become so badly fragmented that our new list dies prematurely or that "new-comers" are deprived the opportunity to learn of new-found connections. Savvy? I'll leave it up to each of you to discern when it's best to continue posting to the wider, REEVES-L audience, and when you've got info that's best shared directly w/ another, "offline." Again, I encourage each of you to exercise deliberative discretion, okay? _________________________________________________________ Now; another idea for thought: Perhaps because *I* continue to have difficulty finding the parents of *my own* John REEVES (b. 1780/90 in "eastern Virginia," d. 1840 (Columbus, Bartholomew, IN)), I've been engaged for several months now trying to "reconstruct" other REEVES lines hoping that, through the process of elimination, I might eventually "key in on" particularly relevant leads. Consequently, I have (as many of you no doubt likewise have) a number of yet unconnected REEVES gedcom files. Together w/ messages that have been either sent to personally or posted to REEVES-L recently, those gedcoms have been--for at least 6-10 of you now--the sources by which I've "tied" you together! Clearly, though, there *still* are a great many different REEVES lines to establish linkages with (*if,* they exist), my own included! So, I'm wondering...what would you'all think about establishing a "repository" for REEVES family gedcom files? I'm aware that there's quite a debate ensuing these days about the sharing of .GED files w/ "strangers;" privacy issues and all. But what about creating a "library" or "repository" of "REEVES families" gedcoms that each included information *ONLY* for individuals born prior to 1900, for instance? What'ya all think? Yes, sheer storage space could utimately become a problem but I have the "wherewithall" to handle that potential problem and I'm prepared to serve as the "repository" site. I think the larger question concerns privacy, etc., an argument I won't argue with. 'Still, it seems a shame that--for fear of privacy concerns--we may *never* establish some REEVES family links that could only be established by close examination of others' gedcom files... I'm not "married" to the idea, one can request and/or recontruct a gedcom file pretty readily just by what is shared online already. But it *would* facilitate a faster and, I think more thorough, analysis of the liklihood of REEVES familial linkages. Perhaps a discussion of "rules" for use/distribution is appropriate? What'ya all think? Greg Reeves REEVES-L listowner greg@rapidnet.com ------------------------------
