A Genealogy Conference focusing on Henry Reeves Sr. of Essex County Virginia and his descendants will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005 in Dunnesville Virginia. The purpose of the conference is to share and exchange genealogical research regarding this early Reeves immigrant and his descendants. Anyone descending from Henry Reeves or currently researching this line is invited to attend. Those interested in attending the conference can contact either David LeRoux at [email protected] or Carole Waters at [email protected]
Hello, I'm looking for descendants of: Willis Reeves (1780 NC - 1846 NC) married (1802 SC) Elizabeth Rooker (1782 NC - 1870 TN) Willis was the son of William Reeves, Sr (1723 NC - 1821 SC) and Elizabeth Lawson (1738 NC - 1782 SC) Elizabeth was the daughter of Rev. John Rooker (1755 VA - 1840 SC) and Anna Hawkins (1759 NC - 1845 NC) My Reeves family had lived in the Gaston and Lincoln county area of North Carolina along the Catawba River since the late 1700's. At times, they also lived in York County, South Carolina which is just across the state line from Lincoln County, North Carolina. But when my 3rd Great Grandfather Willis Reeves died on August 12, 1846 in Gaston County, his wife Elizabeth Rooker Reeves and their grown children and their families decided to move farther west. A distant cousin and fellow researcher once told me that some of the older sons of Willis and Elizabeth Reeves had already migrated to west Tennessee by 1840. I have an original court document from Gibson County, Tennessee dated November 9, 1842 that lists William E. Reeves, W. S. (L) Reeves and John Rooker as witnesses, so I know they were in west Tennessee at that time. According to family tradition, the Reeves family traveled for six weeks by covered wagon from Lincoln County, North Carolina to Gibson County, Tennessee. They arrived near the town of Gadsden on April 27, 1847. I have copies of deeds from 1848 and 1849 where each of the Reeves brothers purchased land here. At least one of these original properties is still owned by a Reeves descendant today. Their children were: Jennings Rooker Reeves (1803 NC -1879 TN) married (1836 NC) Eliza Titman (1812 NC - 1896 TN) Willis Leander Reeves (1814 SC -1880 TN) married (1846 TN) Mary Robinson (1812 NC - 18?? TN) John Newton Reeves (1806 NC - 1833 GA?) No record of marriage - may have died very young Ann Garland Thompson/Thomasson Reeves (1806 NC - 1885 TN) married (1855 TN) James C Bradford (1807 TN - 1864 TN) William Egbert Reeves (1811 SC - 1890 TN) married (1839 NC) Cynthia Dulcina Williams (1819 NC - > 1880 TN) Thomas Irving Reeves (1817 SC - 1857 TN) married (1842) Rebecca Patillo Rooker (1824 VA - 1904 TN) Henry Wyatt Reeves (1819 SC - 1883 TN) married (1861 TN) Elizabeth Jane McCorkle (1836 TN - 1905 TN) Jacob Jabez Rooker Reeves (1827 SC - 1903 TN) married (1855 TN) Mary Ann McCulloch (1835 SC - > 1858 TN) Jennings Rooker Reeves was my Great Great Grandfather. Does anyone of have information on a Robert Reeves who came from England and landed in Philly in the early 1840's. He then moved to DC with his wife, Mary Reeves, and their daughters. He is buried in Congressional Cemetery in DC. I don't know if he may have had other family in the Philly area. Thanks, Elizabeth Maguire-Culhane
I don't believe she is connected to my line. Of course I have no information on the parents of Thomas Jefferson Reeves (1825-1875). I can't find his parents nor do I have the names of any of his siblings. He married Mary Buckner and I have lots of info on her line.
I do not have a Maretta Jane Reeves in my family file. Which county in GA. was she from?
Thanks for checking, Shirley. Diane --- [email protected] wrote: > I don't believe she is connected to my line. I believe she was from Covington, Georgia. I don't have any information on her parents (other than that they were probably born in GA) or her siblings. She married Rufus Marion Griffin from Cherokee Cty., NC. They moved west and lived in Navarro Cty, TX and ending up in Beaumont, CA. Not familiar with the names, B. F. Reeves, Nancy Mann, however will keep an eye open in my searches. Carol
My great great grandmother's name of Maretta Jane Reeves from Georgia. She was born around 1850 or so, I think. Have you heard of this name? Is she any relation to your Reeves? I was the one that proposed the theory that this John Reeves, native of PA (abt 1780-bef 1850) may be the husband of Mary (Dill) who died somewhere in the Lafayette, IN area abt 1840. There is a John Reeves on the tax list of 1801 in Sunfish twp, Ross (now Pike Co), OH which may be this family. Census records for 1820 list a John Reeves. Later census records list several John Reeves in Ross, Pike, and Fairfield Counties. At some time in the late 1830's he migrated to Fountain Co, then possibly Indepenence, Warren Co, then finally Westpoint, Tippecanoe Co, IN area. I suspect that John is somehow related to the prominent Nathan/Nathaniel Reeves who married Anne Doddridge and who lived on Zane's Trace (forever recorded by Cumrine in 1806). There is an historical (Nathaniel) Reeves'Crossing (on Paint Creek) now Rt 50 between Bainbridge and Bourneville below Chillicothe, OH. There is also the Seip Dill Indian (burial) Mound there and the town of Dils/Dill, OH. I am researching all Reeves in Southern Ohio in the 1750's to the 1830's to see which families emigrated from the Eastern seaboard states. I am now working on the theory that John Reeves declared himself a Virginian (in today's Wash Co, PA) since Gov Dinwiddie was selling the same PA land at a cheaper price and many families appear in this area: Dill, Doddridge, Reeves, Teeter, Wells,
I hope this will be of some help. I have had this in my file for a while. My grandfather was named, Thomas Edward Lafayette Reeves (1863-1923). He was born in Talbot/Taylor County, GA. His father was named Thomas Jefferson Reeves (1825-1875). My grandfather had a brother named John Leonard Reeves, born ca. 1852. I have no further info on this John. Was the " Mary Lafayette" you mentioned in your inquiry from PA.? The names are of interest to me.
While you are researching the Ohio Reeves, will you please keep a look out for my B.F. Reeves (Reave) (Reaves). Born about 1817 in Ohio (?) He married Nancy Mann, born in Canada about 1820, in Knox County, Ohio. I have their marriage record, but no details and have not been able to find his ancestors. Does anyone know the John Reeves who married Mary Dill, daughter of Thomas Dill of Dillsburg, PA abt 1800? The Dill family is easy to trace, there are so many John Reeve and there is no exact trace of him. Perhaps he is the John Reeves who died in Indiana same as Mary (Lafayette) abt 1840's? I am of the Dill and Reeves families, both. the Reeves I have traced backward from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, PA., Delaware, Ireland, England. [email protected]
