My oldest and only Reeves ancestor in a tree of over 3700 in my g-g-g-grandmother, Barbara (Barbary) Reeves, born ca 1777, place unknown. She married William McElvy on April 23, 1799, place unknown. The marriage date is in the McElvy family Bible originally owned by William & Barbara Reeves McElvy. In L. W. Rigsby's "Historic Georgia Families", he has them married on April 23, 1799 in Dublin, Ireland and arriving in America shortly after. His only documentation is for the marriage date that was gleaned from the family Bible. Barbara Reeves McElvy died, according to the family Bible, on February 5, 1838. Her grave site is located just south of Bainbridge, Decatur Co, GA where they lived for many years. In a letter written by William McElvy in 1839, he gives the impression that both he and Barbara were born in America. Their first child was born in America in 1800. They were in Burke Co, GA. then. They were in Tattnall Co, GA in the early 1800's and then in Decatur Co, GA by 1822. In the Augusta Chronicle published in Augusta, Georgia, there is a notice showing William McElvey was appointed the administrator of the estate of George Reeves on December 21, 1803, in Burke County. This gives the impression that George Reeves could possible be a relative to Barbara. Maybe her father??? There are other Reeves in the same area that may be relatives to Barbara. They were Joseph, Francis and John. Common family names for William McElvy & Barbara Reeves McElvy were George, Francis and John. I have not found a single clue as to Barbara (Barbary) Reeves McElvy's ancestry. Nor have I found a single descendant with the Reeves surname. I have hundreds of her descendants with the McElvy surname as well as other surnames, but none with the Reeves surnames. A desperate Reeves descendant, Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL

Hi Charles, it seems we're distant cousins. In my documentation, which another cousin put together for our family group, I have your family from William to Sherman. We don't have anything after Sherman, documented. I would love to share what we have and introduce you to the other cousins following this line. Email me at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . Talk to you soon Judi Reeves
I can only add my limited line as follows: William Reeves b 1 Dec 1777 listed on 1820 Census in Greene County PA with six children. My ggrandfather Washington Robert Reeves b 1817 in Greene County, PA My grandfather Ulysses Sherman Reeves b 1865 in Canton Stark County OH My father Charles Warner Reeves b 1894 in Canton Stark County OH Washington reported on some Census records his father William as being born in PA and on his last living census as being born in England. I have not been able to locate the origin of William to confirm the location of his birth. Maybe this site will help me. Charles Sherman Reeves

Listers, My oldest proven ancestor is Thompson Reeves b. 1799 either in Pendleton Dist. S.C. or over the line in Georgia. I know we often think this but I have really believed he might have been an orphan and lived for a time with an older brother or perhaps Uncle. He apparently married when he was about 16 to Lucinda Rilla ( almost always called Cinderella) who was probably a Robinson age 15. Because of good fortune with the Reeves DNA project as my nephew matched Beulah and Barry I believe he is either a grandson or great grandson of William Reeves who married Margaret in Granville Co. I am daily examining those lines. Presently I am focusing on Jeremiah the son of James and Grandson of William of Granville. May we all be more successful as we work together. Tommie Reeves Smith

I have only the one male REEVES ancestor. William REEVES . Some papers say William Henry Harrison REEVES and some say William Harrison REEVES. He was born in May, 1848. Unfortunately, also controversial, either in Warren, Ohio or in Warren County, Pennsylvania. No proof either way. He lived both in Sugar Grove, Warren Co., Pennsylvania and in his later years at Wetmore, McKean County, Pennsylvania where he died as a widower. He had a wife Jennie PASSINGER and two daughters - Bessie Mae REEVES and Emma REEVES. He died Sept. 1, 1911 and is buried at Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania. I have never been able to connect him to either Ohio or Pennsylvania as a youth or young man. Maybe someday they will have a DNA test that will help track through the female descendants. Would love to find out where my REEVES came from. Beth Fleischer , Hacienda Heights, California
Hello David, I am a Reeves from America. The state of Texas to be exact. I just wanted to mention that in New York Harbor there is Ellis Island where many immigrants came through after 1892. It has been turned into a great resource for some records. I understand they have a lot of ship records for passengers. The internet address of www.ellisisland.org I think will bring it up. I hope it helps. Tommie Reeves Smith David Reeves <[email protected]> wrote: Thank you for the kind welcome and links! My Robert Reeves was a weaver who was born in Trowbridge England (according to his tombstone in Congressional Cemetery in DC) and he and his wife came over in the 1840's to Philadelphia. Both he and Mary Reeves were listed as weavers on the ships manifest. They moved to Washington, DC where my great grandmother was born. Has anyone located any Reeves in the Trowbridge England area? Thanks, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, NY

I bought a book titled "Best Tales of Texas Ghosts" by Docia Schultz Williams, published 1998 by the Republic of Texas Press and one chapter in the book is titled "REEVES THICKET'S RANCH HOUSE". The story is about a John Reeves, Sr. who came to Texas from Pikes County, Georgia in the early 1840's. I quote from this book "It is believed his wife probably died in childbirth, because Reeves came to Texas alone, leaving his father and oldest son, John Reeves, Jr., behind for quite some time. Finally, after John Sr. acquired considerable land holdings and established a law practice, he sent for his son, John, and his father to join him. John Jr. brought his wife, Cady, and their nine children with him. Later, another child, their tenth, William Worth Reeves, was born after they had settled into their new Texas home." And I further quote from this book: "Between Victoria and Goliad, off highway 59, there is a small community called Reeves Thicket. It used to be one huge ranch, but over the years the land has been subdivided and sold off in large lots where over 300 families reside today. The original ranch belonged to one man, John Reeves, Sr., from Georgia". The book says John Reeves was born 1779 and died in 1863. His grave is one of those in the rather sizeable Reeves Family Cemetery that sits on what is known as Reeves Hill today. The book states: "After a few years, John Jr. and his family moved to the banks of Coleto Creek, in the area now known as Reeves Thicket." John Reeves, Jr. died in 1868, and at that time, one of his sons, Jonathan, whom they called "Tobe" moved the family home from the banks of the Coleto Creek to its present location." unquote. Mrs. Williams' book is very interesting!! I found the above information interesting since this Reeves Family came from Georgia. My Reeves Grandparents came from Taylor and Talbot Counties, GA. and I continue to search for my line. My great grandfather, Thomas "Tom" Jefferson Reeves (1825-1875) had a son named "John Leonard Reeves, born ca. 1852, (Talbot County 1860 Census) whom I have never found a trace of since the 1860 Talbot census. My grandfather, Edward Lafayette Thomas Reeves, (son of Thomas Jefferson Reeves & brother to John Leonard Reeves), came to Texas 1904-05 and settled in Houston County, Texas and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery near Lovelady, Texas. David, I do hope you will consider joining our DNA Project. We are trying to connect our family lines that have been elusive. He was born 1806/7 in Arle/Swindon, Gloucestershire, and lived in Arle for all of his life as an agricultural labourer. Beyond that, I'm going to have to go back to England and sort through parish registers I think, unless someone here knows any better ;) As a molecular biologist, I'm fascinated by the DNA project too - I might have to try that sometime! David, My immigrant ancestor was William Ryves born 1636 in England. He came to America about 1652 and settled in Surry County, Virginia. I believe there are some others on the list that have English ancestors who came to the U.S. more recently than that. Perhaps some of them will post their immigrant ancestors.
