For those with ancestors in NC in the 1770s you may enjoy this map of NC for 1779. Don't go by what you see today on the maps. Beulah _http://ncnatural.com/maps/1779n4.jpg_ (http://ncnatural.com/maps/1779n4.jpg)
Ellie--You might start by trying the 1870 US Census for MA to see if you can locate the families of Frank and Ellen. If you find them, move forward and back with Census records to see what you can learn about the families. Then check for death records of parents for their parents names and maiden names. That will give you a start. Hi Barry, Thanks so much for the quick response. I ordered the kit tonight and it will be mailed to Camden SC tomorrow so we can hopefully tie our ancestry to someone as we only know back to my great grandfather Robert Henry Reeves as he died when my grandfather Wallace Robert Reeves was a small child and he and his siblings were split up with different families. My father Wallace Robert Reeves, Jr. died three years ago so we don't have much history on this family other than the recent families and my grandfathers siblings. Thank you again for all you do for the Reeves familes. Barry, I have an uncle that is sick but who had agreed to participate in the DNA project before he was admitted to a nursing home as he is soon to have surgery.. My concern is if I order the kit and he should die before we get it to him will I be allowed to have his brother who is 91 take his place and will it cost more as I am paying for the test kit. I need to know this before I fill out the form as it calls for the name of the participating person. Please give me an answer as soon as possible as he is quite sick. How long does the test kit take to arrive? Hi Mary, I'm very sorry to hear about the health of your uncle. We'll keep him in our prayers. I don't believe there should be a problem changing the name of the person taking the test to that of the brother. David or I could work that out with FamilyTreeDNA. It wouldn't make any difference in the price of the kit. I think my kit arrived in about four or five days after I ordered it. David Leroux may know if the kit can be sent overnight if needed. However, that would probably cost extra if FamilyTreeDNA was willing to do that. I hope this answers your questions. Maybe David has some thoughts on this. Karen, The entry you found in the 1900 census was the key. I know Joe will need to do more research to confirm these are the right people, but everything seems to fit. I have been at a standstill for so long on my own family research, that it's really fun to help someone else get past a "brick wall". After all, when it comes down to it, we are all part of one great BIG family tree. I like to think of Genealogy as a really big puzzle. You just keep trying the pieces until they fit. Hi Joe, Based on the family headed by Jennie Paterson in 1900, I looked for a Jennie Reeves in the 1880 census who was born in Illinois in 1854. I found the following family. 1880 Census (Jun 7, 1880) Mazon, Grundy County, Illinois REAVES, John - Head of Household - age 28 born in Illinois REAVES, Jennie - Wife - age 27 (1873/74) born in Illinois REAVES, Nelson - Son - age 8 born in Illinois REAVES, Maggie - Daughter - age 5 born in Illinois REAVES, Charles A - Son - age 2 born in Illinois I would do some more research, but the dates and places match. The surname REAVES and REEVES were interchangeable from one census to another. This could be the parents of your John V. Reeves. Best Regards, Barry Reeves -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 11, 2005 7:53 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [REEVES] John V. Reeves Hi Joe, I read your posting on the Reeves site and may have some information which might help. At least I think it's your Reeves......... His name is John Valentine Reeves, born February 14, 1887, Fowler, Benton County, Indiana. His registration card for the 1917-1918 draft registration says he is a farm laborer for W. J. Lawson in Chase, Indiana. He mentions a wife and two children, but not their names. He is of medium height, slender, light brown eyes with dark brown hair. I found this same John V. Reeves on the 1900 census living in Boone, Centralia County, Missouri. I believe he is the same John V. Reeves because the census lists his birthday as February 1887. So, it connects up well, might be a coincidence, but I would definitely check it out. The census reads as follows: Head of Family: Jennie Paterson, born Jan. 1854, age 46, born Illinois, both of her parents born Vermont. It says she is married for 26 years, but no husband is living with the family and she is listed as the head of the family. She is the mother of nine children with eight of those children living. John V. Reeves, son. February 1887, age 13 yrs. born Indiana, father, Ind. mother, Ill. Mattie E. Reeves, dau. Sept. 1889, age 10 yrs., born Indiana, father, Indiana, mother Ill. Jennie E. Reeves, dau. February 1893, age 7 yrs. born Indiana, father Indiana, mother Ill. Most likely the father, Reeves, died and she remarried a Paterson and who knows where he was? The kids all have the Reeves surname. I would suggest checking Benton County, Indiana, resources for a Reeves name since this is where John V. Reeves was born. Benton County is right on the Illinois border. You may also have some luck by going to Google and typing in Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for Indiana. See if you can find someone to help you from Benton County. These are volunteers and I've had wonderful luck with some of them. Good Luck in your search. This is not much but I give you what I have on one John V. Reeves b. 1876 My grandfather's brother named Wiley Reeves and wife Matilda had a son named John V. Reeves in 1876 . I know the numbers don't fit but they could be in error. Wiley never moved to Indiana to my knowledge but anything is possible. John V . had brothers who were born in Magnet Cove. Ar. after he was born. The family would have been there in 1888 when another son was born. I know nothing of John V.'s children so Its not much help. Good luck. Tommie
That was good material Johnie. I thank you One person who had a son named Coleman was Jesse and Sarah Reeves .Coleman was born in 1805. I had mentioned to James Countryman that he might want to look at him. Jesse was born in 1766. Jesse was also the father of Jonathan b, 1788. Jonathan had a son named Thompson but he would only be 12 in that year. I am quite sure this Thompson is mine b. 1799. He shows up here next to Leroy which shows some closeness. There was a Reuben Reeves who was born to Richard and Elizabeth in Lucerne, Fayette Township, PA. Oct 30, 1793. Tommie
In 1989 I had an opportunity to spend a couple of days at the Georgia Dept. of Archives and History in Atlanta. The collection was well indexed and the staff very friendly and helpful. One series of their records pertains to the 1832 Gold Lotteries of land in which a number of individuals having REAVES, REEVE, REEVES, REIVERS, REAVIS, & REIVES surnames appear as "winners". The Section, District, Lot, & Lot Order for each winner's tract is given and its description and survey is shown in the well organized microfilm collection. Coleman REEVES was listed as a winner in Section 2, District 21, Lot 0982. There was no survey. Other REEVES winners for Section 2, District 21 were: Lucins, Lot 0208, not surveyed; & Martin H., Lot 0456. Also a winner for Section 2, District 21: John S. REIVES, Lot 0288. There's no indication that this Coleman is James Coleman--but, thought you'd like to have the datum. By the way, I made notes on 4 Sections and don't remember if there were more. I recently spent 8 days researching in the SC Archives, and their collection is absolutely enormous. It takes at least that long to do a decent search. Regrettably, we found very little on our Starnes family, but gained much experience in researching. The Curator and assistants are extremely courteous and helpful. Just wanted to add my 2-cents worth...lol.
