    1. REID FAMILY of NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Dear Diana, My Read/Reid family originated in VA, probably Brunswick Co., Lunenburg Co., Charlotte Co. VA. Around the mid-1700s the family came down to NC. It was there that the name changed from READ to REID, but sometimes the records show them as REED. I have been told there are a lot of NATHANs and WILLIAMs in the REID/REED families. If you will look at the below chart, you will see some Nathans but I don't know where they went from NC, except my own line (Julia Ann Reid m. Abner Pace 1843 NC). Nathan REID (son of John Clement Reid) married in 1833, but I often have thought that perhaps it was his 2nd marriage (to Mary Cotrell). I only know of one child of his (William E. C. Reid). I just thought I would let you see this descendancy in case anything clicks. I did notice an Amanda. Plus my Jesse Reid was a shoemaker also. I don't know about his brother Nathan Reid, however. 1. NC **** buried in Old English Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC ***** buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, NC On census reports in this early period, REED and REID seem almost interchangeable, as do COTRELL/COTTRELL and MINOR/MINER. There are even some READs in NC census reports in the early 19th century. There was a JESSE REID who married a PHEBE HOWERTON in Guilford on 19 May 1864, bondsman Wm. A. Linds. Jesse Reid (age 67) is living alone with Phebe (age 50) in the 1870 census in Forsythe Co., NC--occupation shoemaker. This has to be our Jesse with his 3rd wife. Family tradition says that our READs are of the line of the Clement READS of VA. I had a book on interlibrary loan for a short while: The Reads and Their Relatives, Being an Account of Colonel Clement and Madam Read of Bushy Forest, Lunenburg County, Virginia, their Eight Children, their Descendants, and Allied Families. This book is written by ALICE READ (MRS. SHELLEY ROUSE), 1930, Johnson & Hardin Press, Cincinnati. It is owned by Hampton-Sydney College. p. 427-8 Covering the Frederick Carr Moore (of Norfolk, VA) July 8, 1886 marriage to Anne (Nannie) Cabell McIlwaine (b. Sept 3, 1861), Postmistress of Warrenton, NC for more than thirty years, The Moores were northern people who came South because they liked the climate, and settled near Norfolk, VA. This couple had 4 children: Turner Wharton Moore (b.1887); Nannie Cabell Moore (b.1891); James Carr Moore; Sarah McIlwaine Moore (b. 1896), married Feb 6, 1923 to Fitzhugh Read of Mecklenburg Co. VA, son of Hon. Stephen READ of Mecklenburg VA and his wife (Miss Wright of Palmer Springs, VA). They had a son named FITZHUGH TREZVANT READ, JR. (new paragraph but under this group) HON. STEPHEN READ was a Capt. Co. F., 14th VA Regt., CSA, succeeding his cousin, Capt. Farrar, who was killed at Gettysburg. After the [Civil] War he represented Mecklenburg [VA] in the House of Delegates and the State Senate for many years. He was a son of WILLIAM H. READ (d.1880) and Martha TURNER; son of CLEMENT READ (d.1841), who came to Mecklenburg Co. VA, from Charlotte or Lunenburg VA about 1800, with his wife, who was ELIZABETH QUARLES. This CLEMENT READ was one of eight children, all of whom moved in a great trek, tradition has it, with wives, slaves, cattle and household goods, headed for territories further south; however, when they reached the region of Mecklenburg Co., VA., and the adjoining North Carolina counties, they were too pleased to go on, and settling in that region, formed a wide-reaching and influential connection. Of one of them, MR. NATHAN READ, son of JAMES R. READ (will prob. July 8, 1799) and his wife, "who was a daughter of the Averly who founded the Averly plough works in Clarkesville VA, which are now in Louisville and said to be the largest ploughworks in the world," we have a glimpse in the letters of Dr. Hoge. Their comfortable house and luxurious table were the subject of his enthusiastic enconium when he was living as a young tutor in their family. The connection of this branch of READs with the family of Col. CLEMENT READ of Lunenburg has not been traced but they have a tradition that such connection exists, and the males of Mecklenburg [VA] and Carolina are big blonde men, very like the READs of Charlotte Co.. (the author's footnote: Mr. William Read Turner, grandson of Susan A. T. Read (the sister of Capt. Stephen Read), who married Stephen Turner of North Carolina and had John Read Turner (1839-1904), who married second: Frances Lucas Irby of Lunenburg, is investigating this line and hopes eventually to discover his missing link.) The above is included in a major division/section of the book headed: COL. ISAAC READ I and SARAH EMBRA I could find no further reference to Dr. Hoge, and the book has no bibliography. I looked for the names in our line (Nathan, John, Jesse, and Green) and this reference to Nathan caught my eye since it was the only one in the index. Nothing on Jesse or Green READ/REID. Hoping something will ring a bell, Betty Pace <YOU WROTE> Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 09:06:33 -0700 From: "Diana Owen" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: REED's in Tipton Co., Indiana Does anyone have REED's who lived in Tipton Co., Indiana ? (Who might have ancestors from Virginia) I would appreciate hearing from anyone, as a help in researching my NATHAN REED, whose daughters Melinda and Amanda REED (b OH) married brothers Mahlon and Eli Anderson BAILEY in the early 1850's in TIPTON CO., INDIANA. Melinda and Amanda REED's other possible siblings are: -Hannah E. REED, m Alexander RIDGEWAY 1855, Tipton Co., IN -Nathan REED, b abt 1834 VA, shoemaker by trade -Norris REED b abt, m Achsah (Unknown) The Bailey's had Quaker roots and had migrated from VA.The two REED-BAILEY couples migrated to Morristown, Rice., Co., MN and then on to Sentinel Butte, Golden Valley, ND. 3. Hi Betty, Thank you so much for your wonderfully detailed response. I think you may have something here that touches my NATHAN REED line, but exactly how I am not sure. Any help or suggestions from other Reed listers???. Also Betty (or anyone). do you know of any READ/REID/REED musicians?? Family lore states NATHAN REED WAS A MUSICIAN BORN IN SCOTLAND, but the 1870 Census for Warsaw, Rice Co., MN for Nathan Reed (JR) indicates his parents were not foreign born. Here is the census info in case any of Nathan Reed (Jr)'s children names ring a bell. REED, NATHAN - 36-Shoemaker-b VIRGINIA Reed, Harriet-33b-keeping house-b OH Reed, Norris-28-OH Reed, Achsah-31--domestic servant- b OH Nathan-18-Farm Laborer b OH Theraby?-14-b IN Amanda-12-b IN The birth years and locations of the Nathan Reed's children coincide with the locations of his sister Melinda Reed/m. Mahlon Bailey, who are also listed on the same census in Warsaw, Rice Co., MN. I am very grateful for your information, as this is the best lead I have had in 10 years on this line.
