    3. Hi Bonnie, Handed down:William "Silver Billy Reed, back in early 1800 owned land in what is now Jefferson County, Alabama. Most of the property was gained through the power of his shining "cartwheels and a shrewd mind. In all his financial dealings, the colorful and legendary Mr. Reed insisted on using silver of which he seemed to have an abundance. Old timers used to tell the story of Billy and his kegs of silver dollars and how he would drive a wagon to public land sales with the kegs aglow with treasures. Some people said sand was under a thin layer of silver dollar, but no one seemed to have ever proved this contention. The Weekly Iron Age (Published in Birmingham (Elyton) Alabama.) Sketches Dated 22 July 1886 Another old pioneer was William Reed, familiarly called "Silver Billie" because he was never known to buy any article on credit, but invariably paid cash on the spot, and always in the same currency, silver coin. Thanks for asking, Jeanette
