    1. Re: [REED] John Reed and his Gold mine
    2. Sharon ,this John Reed had another spelling not Reid... it was German and then changed in America. Can't remember exactly, something like Reidth. The other Reed /Reid in NC during this time frame were either Scot-Irish or English. I have two Reed lines in NC during the 1700s so have come across this German group on my searches. I believe there is a very large book on this German Reed family in the Archives here in Raleigh. Also I believe I saw a family file folder on them as well. P.Pittman

    1. McGuire Reed
    2. Connie Bradbury
    3. I am researching McGuire or Maguire Reed who apparently married three times in Ohio. He married first, Elizabeth Watson 2 Dec 1834 Montgomery County. In 1860 he is age 48 b, OH in Boone Co., IN with wife Mary age 58, b. VA and daughter, Caroline age 18, b. OH. In 1870 he is age 56 in Montgomery Co., OH with wife Mary 67 and no children. I have a marriage record of a Mary Ann Miller that is confusing. At first glance it appears that Mary Ann Miller is marrying Peter Lehman, Sr. However here is how the printed document reads with inserted handwriting: Page 563 State of Ohio, Montgomery County: Personally appeared in the Probate Judge's Office, within and for the County of Montgomery Peter Lehman Sen. who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he ["he" is crossed out and the name Maguire Reed is inserted above the printed "he"] is more than twenty-one years of age, and has no lawful wife living; and that Mary Ann Miller is more than eighteen years of age, and has no lawful husband living; that she is a resident of the County of Montgomery, and that he knows of no legal objection to the marriage contemplated between him and the said Mary Ann Miller. Sworn to and subscribed before me } Peter Lehman this 21st day of March 1872 } Jacob Stephens Deputy Clerk To the Judge of the Probate Court of Montgomery County, O. married on the 21st day of March A.D. 18 72 Maguire Reed and Mary Ann Miller by A. Bowers. Minister What causes confusion is 1) the name of Peter Lehman being entered onto the line where the name of the groom normally appears; 2) the crossing out of "he" and inserting above it the name of Maguire Reed; but most of all 3) Peter Lehman physically signing in the place where the groom usually signs. On the same page is another record of marriage that is filled out properly. I don't find a Peter Lehman with a wife Mary Ann in the 1880 census for Montgomery Co. In 1880 he is 65 with a different wife, Mary Ann (Stewart) Latin (widow of Isaac) whom he married 26 Jul 1841 in Greene Co., OH. Living with them is Joseph H. Grubb, age 36 b. OH and Jacob Grubb age 26 b. OH. Their relationship to the head of household is "Step son". I hope there is someone on this list who can help me sort this out. Connie Bradbury

    1. Clement READ family--Warren Co. NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I couldn't tell the exact place in this work, but it comes from the Warren Co. NC courthouse. There may be references to the Read/Reed/Turner family that I missed. I am somehow connected to the Clement READ family of VA, down to NC. I wish I had information on the William Read Turner mentioned because he was given the Bible. Betty Pace From: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwarren/bibles/bibles-all/turner.htm Susannah Hamner Turner Bible posted by Warren County NC Courthouse Turner Bible Physical History of the Bible of Susannah Hamner Turner: Her note quoted indicates she acquired it about the time of her marriage to Stephen Turner in 1764 - The book was published in 1762. Susan A. T. REED dauhter of Clement Read and Elizabeth his wife was born te 19th day of December in the year of our Lord 1810. Stephen Turner &a Susan A. T. Read was married the 17th day of May 1832. Henley Turner & Elizabeth Duke was married the 22nd February in the year of our Lord 1810. Stephen Tuner & Ssuan a. T. READ was married 17 day of May in the year of our Lord 1832. Read departed this life the 13 day of August 1843. Vernon Edward Rawles Jr, grandson of Zachary T. Turner, who lived in Henderson NC in 1970, owned his grandfather's home and farm and who lent me the bible, told me that the bible remained at Uncle Zach's place until sometime after his death when Uncle Zach's son J. Alvis Turner, gave it to William Read Turner of Blackstone VA on the death of the latter, it was given to Edward Rawles by Mrs. William Read Turner. Stephen Henley Turner, son of Henley and Elizabeth (Duke) Turner and grandson of the first Stephen lived on a plantation of 540 acres (at the time his estate was divided) in Warren Co NC, near Mt. Auburn Christian Church North of Drewry NC but spent his last years near Middleburg NC in a home adjoining that of his son, Zachary T. Turner (1849-1927) where he died in 1889. Other data: Aliena Wiggins Turner (Mrs. J. Alvis) states on page 22 of John Marshall Sr, 1956 that the first Stephen Turner who married Susanna Hamner was of Amherst County Virginia. She gives his name as Stephen Reuben Turner, however, she refers to his son as Henly Turner and to Henly's wife as Mary (his wife was Elizabeth Duke according to the Turner Bible). Michaux H. Crocker Greensboro, NC NOTE: Variances of spellings occur. They are copied here as in the Bible.
