Needle in a haystack? I'm look for ancestry of Sarah Reed b. 1733 maybe in Ashford, CT, where she m. 11 Oct 1750 Benjamin Russell. But d. 6 Dec 1756, after birth of my ancestor 30 Jul 1755. Benjamin then m. Phebe Smith 1757 and family later moved to VT. Seems I heard somewhere Sarah's family might have come from town of Union north of Ashford. Thanks for any clues. Thanks. When I started to do research on my family, I already had info on the Hoag's. Teets, Terry and Fitch of the NY and Ct area in early 1800's. I thought with names like that it would be easy. Not so. My maiden name was Green and my father's family from Tn. With a zillion Green's in Tn I thought it would be a hopeless cause. It was a breeze as they all left wills, so it was easy to trace back to early 1700's and into Va and NC. So far haven't found any wills for the north east families. Thanks again. Wow, it sounds as if you have an interesting ancestor. You'll find many, many references to the "Black Dutch" on the Internet, just Google the term and do some reading. Many people use the term interchangeably with Melungeon, but it is likely not the same thing. There are even some DNA projects around the Melungeons as a matter of fact. Google Melungeon, too for some interesting reading.I think the term "Black Dutch" was around a lot longer than Melungeon though. Just one interesting site is this one: http://www.geocities.com/mikenassau/BlackDutch.htm Most of the Melungeons seem to be in the Appalachians as a general rule, and in several states for that matter. There are many articles written about tri-racials in the south, and the Melungeons are mentioned in some of them as well. There is a NC researcher, Jeffrey L.Haines, who did a marvelous study written up in the NGS Journal a few years ago that traced just such a migration pattern as your family. He has a web page at http://ourworld-top.cs.com/HainesJeff/index.htm that talks a bit about his area of research, so you can understand that he is well experienced in researching that part of the country. His article was fascinating and I really enjoyed reading it. If you don't have the journal yourself, perhaps your local genealogical library has it on its shelves. I'm sure you'd enjoy it. It may give you some pointers on how to proceed with your research. When the NGS had its conference in the states in Nashville, TN last year I was fortunate to spend the afternoon in the State Archives there, and enjoyed seeing the vast resources they have on Tennessee families. There is a great deal to be seen there on the families of western North Carolina too, naturally, as eastern Tennessee was once North Carolina. If you have access to this wonderful resource I'm sure you will learn a lot more about your family's progress westward. The NCGS lists genealogical societies in the state, and the listing for Stokes County is here: http://www.ncgenealogy.org/ It sounds like you're going to have fun with this family. Good luck. Carol
I would like info on the family (ancestors) of John 'Sonny' Reed who married Mary Witt (d. of Edmund and Sarah (Cook) Witt in Stokes County, NC in 1830. At some point, they moved to Union County, TN by 1839 and then into Campbell County, TN by ____. Sonny was a well known Baptist preacher (his son, John Wiley Reed, was even more well known) and is cited in a book entitled TENNESSEE PIONEER PREACHERS. In another book written about a church in Campbell County, TN, it is said that at some point John 'Sonny' Reed told his family that they were of 'Black Dutch' descent. I'm curious as to what that means and how many people in the Stokes County, NC area claim to be 'black dutch.' Any help with the Reed family prior to their move to TN would be helpful. Thank you, Jennifer Harness Ayers Chattanooga, TN
Although the names are uncertain as there is no civil or religious record of all the births of the Reed children of John C. Reed, the history of Madison County, NY says there were 12 of them and 7 lived to adulthood. The known names as well as we can establish are John, William, Martin, Samuel, Salmon, Eunice, Amanda, and Lucinda. As I have never been able to find any record of the females at all aside from family notes, I can't say Electa could not be a sister, but I find it doubtful. Unfortunately the records from Durham, or Wallingford, CT are no longer in existence for the time when many of John's children were born so we can't check. There were a number of Reeds in Connecticut, and several who came from Massachusetts, but from all reports, John C. Reed seems to have come from Germany. I've not found any connection with any other Reeds for this family. They did marry into several colonial families though as they stayed longer in the area. Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Carol
I wonder if your Samuel Francis Reed could be a sibling of my grgrgrandmother Electa Reed, born 1800 in Ct. Electa married a Huston McMillan, but whether in Ct or NY I don't know. In 1850 census they are living in Saratoga Spgs NY. She moved to Il about 1860. There seems to be a lot of Reeds in Il, but there again don't know if there's any connection. Samuel Francis REED was born 1800-1810 probably Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the son of John C. REED of Durham, and Rebecca JOHNSTON of Branford, Middlesex County, Connecticut. He married first Polly MAT[T]OON, possibly the daughter of Isaiah MAT[T]OON who lived next door to him in the 1830 US Federal census for Durham. He & Polly owned property there. He married second 24 Mar 1833, Sally THARP of Meriden, New Haven County, Connecticut. The 1830 census shows his children: male age 5-10, female age 5-10, female 10-15, and an adult female (likely Polly) age 20-30. Polly probably died (or divorced?) prior to 1833 when he remarried in Meriden. Question: where did his children go, what were their names, did they marry and produce REED and other families? They would have been a male born 1825-1830, a female born 1825-1830, and a female born 1815-1820. Any leads would be much appreciated. I have been searching for this family for ten years, so I need help from others, particularly potential descendants. Carol Hubbell Boggs
Anyone out there have in the dbase a Wallace Reed b. 1825 in PA and d. 1853. He married Catherine Burkholder and had one living son Cyrus Taylor Reed. In the 1850 census Wallace was a teacher. Catherine and Cyrus later moved and spent the rest of their lives in the Greensburg, PA area. Would love to find out Wallace's parents. Linda > >
Samuels' father was also named Samuel. Married to Sarah. No maiden name for Sarah, but these two had children Samuel b. 1764, George 1766. The name "Samuel" was given in the three generations, which makes it rather confusing.
Samuel married Elizabeth Lecky (Lackey) in Fayette Co. PA, about 1792. While there, they had children James, John, Samuel, Mary (Polly). They brought those children with them when they moved to Union County, OH. Then added children Thomas, Jane M., Josiah, George, Eliza and Hannah.
