    3. Hello, I would like to know if there is a probate record in you files (anyone) for George Reed . Does anyone see a census record for him around 1820 or 1830? I am trying to find his minor children during that time period. This George had son named James. Thank you. Pat Bajwa

    3. John - I do not know anything about Henry Reed except that several of his grandsons (including my great grandfather) named Henry Reed as their grandfather from Guilford Co, NC - I'm trying to find out Henry's parents and siblings. I'm not sure that the Henry Reed that married Agnes Bell in 1766 in Rowan Co, North Carolina is the right one but I think so. My great grandfather (who was Henry Reed's grandson) in a Missouri county history said the Reed's came to South Carolina first then moved to Guilford Co, North Carolina before the revolution. I think they moved to Rowan Co, NC, in a part that later became Guilford Co. especially since Henry Reed and Agnes Bell got married in Rowan Co, NC. 3. Reed, daughter of Thomas B. Reed and that is where my Reed line ends. Notice that my great grandfather's middle name is BLACK. I have no idea why, but he was born in Guilford Co, North Carolina in 1819 and brought to Missouri the same year by his parents. Do you know what the connection is between the REED family and the BLACK family? I know there is some connection between the REED family and the DENNY family? Cecy Rice

    1. Fw: Vets Adm Adds Maps to Online Gravesite Locator
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I don't think it is complete yet as I could not find my brother, a Viet Nam veteran, though he died at home. Betty Pace --------- Forwarded message ---------- Those seeking information on veterans may be assisted by this article. VA Adds Maps to Online Gravesite Locator WASHINGTON (June 20, 2006) - The grave locations of more than three million veterans and dependents buried in national cemeteries can be found more easily now because the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has added maps of burial sections online that can be printed from home computers and at national cemetery kiosks. The latest improvement builds upon a service begun two years ago, in which a VA online feature permits family members to find the cemetery in which their loved one is buried. "This new map feature makes it easier for families, friends and researchers to find the exact location of a veteran's grave in all national cemeteries and some state veterans cemeteries," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "It enhances VA's service at national cemeteries, already highly regarded, and our commitment to them as national shrines and historical treasures." The gravesite locator (http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov), online since April 2004, helps veterans' families, former comrades-in-arms and others find the cemeteries where veterans are buried. With the new online feature, people enter a veteran's name to search, click on the "Buried At" (burial location) link and a map of the national cemetery is displayed, showing the section where the grave is located. In a related development, VA recently added to its database the cemeteries in which 1.9 million veterans were buried with VA grave markers. These are mostly private cemeteries. This addition brings the number of graves recorded in the locator to approximately five million. Those with maps are in VA national cemeteries and in state veterans cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery if burials were since 1999. Beyond the five million records now available, VA continues to add approximately 1,000 new records to the database each day. VA also plans to add to its online database the exact locations of veterans' gravesites in the remaining state veterans cemeteries. In the midst of the largest cemetery expansion since the Civil War, VA operates 123 national cemeteries in 39 states and Puerto Rico and 33 soldiers' lots and monument sites. More than three million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict - from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror - are buried in VA's national cemeteries on more than 16,000 acres of land. Veterans with a discharge other than dishonorable, their spouses, and eligible dependent children may be buried in a national cemetery. Other burial benefits include a burial flag, Presidential Memorial Certificate, and a government headstone or marker - even if they are not buried in a national cemetery. Information on VA burial benefits can be obtained from national cemetery offices, from the Internet at http://www.cem.va.gov or by calling VA regional offices toll-free at 1 800-827-1000.

    1. Harrison, Sanford, Nathan REED, and James REED, plus Reuben (Race-Black) REED -- 1850 US Census Schuyler Co., IL
    2. Diana Owen
    3. Sandi, I have made some corrections on the 1850 Census records below, to the birthplaces of the youngest children of Harrison, Sanford and Nathan REED, changing them from ME to IL. The census Enumerator wrote his Me(Maine) and Ill(Illinois), very similar. So, after careful census scrutiny, there were no children of the 3 REED brothers born in Maine. It would appear, based on the younger children's birth in Illinois, the families of Harrison, Sanford and Nathan REED (and James MERRILL), traveled from Montgomery Co., OH to Schuyler Co., IL between 1846 - 1847. As I said previously, on the 1860 Arkansas Census, John MERRILL, 88, is a widower living with his son A.B. Ammi Baston (Baston is AB's mother's maiden name/per rootsweb). Harrison REED named one of his sons AMI Reed. I would say the MERRILL and REED families are somehow possibly related, but I haven't figured out the absolute connection yet. Hannah BASTON MERRILL's mother's maiden name was WEARE, if this rings a bell(see rootsweb). Plus, I found a James REED, b 1802 NY, living in Rushville, Schuyler, IL onthe 1850 census, who may have a connection to your REED family. Perhaps he is a brother 10 years older to Nathan REED b NY, or maybe a cousin? I cannot find this James REED in earlier or later census records. And also, see below, for the family of Reuben REED, age 33, b KY, Race-BLACK, living in BEUNA VISTA, Schuyler Co., IL, as HOH, farmer. A black former slave of the KY REED family ? Although Reuben REED's family was in Buena Vista, IL in about 1841, so he did not travel with them from Montgomery Co, OH in 1846-47. I am adding the info for this family, just to have for your files. On the 1860 census, Reuben REED is still in Woodstock/Buena Vista, Schuyler Co., IL, but I cannot find any of his family on the 1870 census. It just seems interesting, the families of Sanford, Nathan, Harrison and James and Reuben REED are the only REED names in all of Schuyler Co., IL on the 1850 census. No other REED names are listed. And all five of these REED men have connections to their births in either NY, VA or KY. Hope this is helpful, Diana 1850 US Census, OREGON, Schuyler Co., IL REED, Harrison, age 34, Cooper, b VA REED, Eliza, age35, b VA REED, Presleyage 11, b, b OH REED, Marietta, age 7, b OH REED, Ami, (MALE) age 6, b OH REED, William, age 5, OH REED, Ann E., age 3, IL REED, Washington, age 1, b IL 1850 US Census, BROOKLYN, Schuyler Co., IL Sanford REED, age 28, Occ-Cooper, b KY Mary REED, age 27, b VA William W. And, above the LOCK's were Robert McCREERY, and Jacob DAVIS families, who also have connections to KY, OH and ME. I would suggest you look at all these records when you can.

Otis moved in the 1920's to either Missouri or Missippissi. I am not sure what happened to Pink. Most of my grandfathers kids were born in Texarkana. His name was Louis Reed and his mother was named Mary Brown. His dad was supposely named Henry Reed though it is rumored my grandfather changed the spelling of his last name. Also my great grandfather was suppose to have come from a town named after him in either South Carolina or North Carolina. Christine

    3. Diana- One might presume (in hopes of finding some answers) that my Nathan Reed's father move to VA - where next son Harrison was born - because he had a relative there. If we could find out who the parents of my Harrison (born 1815 in VA) were and who the parents of your Nathan (born 1814 in VA) were, we may find that they were siblings or cousins. Question - Where in VA? My Cordell who married Harrison, was from Leesburg, Loudoun Co., VA, after the families ended up in OH. I got the following from another list - it's something to think about. 3. Sandi, I am hoping by researching your 3 REED brothers, it will lead me to the ancestors of my Nathan REED b 1814 VA (married Harriet BARCLAY 1835 Adams, Muskingum, OH). As we have discussed, your Nathan, Sanford and Harrison REED families and my Nathan REED's families seem to have some similarities. So, I have been following the trail of John MERRILL, who followed and lived next household with your family from the 1840 Montgomery, OH (census), to the 1850 Schuyler, OH (census). On the 1850 census, John Merrill is 78 yrs old, born in ME, wife Hannah, and on the 1860 census, he is 88 yrs old, a widower and is living with another son A.B./Ammi Baston MERRILL's family in Arkansas. I hope you follow the MERRILL trail too, as I think it might be helpful to your search for the ancestors of your Nathan, Sanford and Harrison REED. I believe a few of the brothers that split up after leaving Pa as the story goes went from Indiana in a different direction. I have no names until 1850 De Soto Mississippi. John Howard Reed was born in 1827 Alabama and parents were from TN. (their names are unknown). Howard Reed married Mary Frances Billingsly (Fanny) her family later changed the name to Billings. Mary was born in 1829 in Tn, Her mothers maiden name was Sarah Du Barry/ Dewberry. John and Fanny were buried in Rowell Arkansas and one of their sons went to Texas. The Billings family went to Texas as well from Mississippi early on. Some of the names the Reed family married were.. 3. I agree that Sanford isn't common - Sandford is more common - that's part of the reason I thought Currance Sanford may have been their mother. In my Reed family, they often used surnames as first names when naming children and grandchildren. Also, they use some of the same naming conventions common in to many nationalities - i.e. 1st son is named for husband's father, 2nd for wife's father, etc. Sandi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diana Owen" <dianaowen@cox.net> To: <REED-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2006 6:16 PM Subject: [REED] Nathan REED, Sanford REED and the John Merrill family >I mentioned in my previous email, there was a John MERRILL family in >between your Nathan REED > and Sanford REED households on the 1840 Montgomery Co., OH census. > > On the 1850 census for Brooklyn, Schuyler Co., IL listed directly below > your families of Nathan REED and > Sanford REED is-- > John MERRILL, age 78, Occ-Shoemaker, b Maine > Hannah Merrill, age 75, b Maine > Rufus Merrill, age 37, Occ-Cooper, b Maine > (wife)-Susan Merrill, age 35, b OH > Rachell Merrill, age 9, OH > > The Merrill's are either relatives of your REED family, or very good > friends who traveled with them > from Montgomery Co., OH to Schuyler Co., IL > > I have also found it interesting, on the 1870 Census for Liberty, Tipton > Co., IN, there is a Sanford REED age 34 b IN, > wife Elizabeth 34, and children Florida, Franklin, Richard, Oliver and > Caroline, all born Indiana. Hi Sandi, If you mean, you would like the birth years for the other REEDs on the 1840 census, there are no exact ages listed in1840, only the name of the HOH and tick marks for the ages of others living in the household. Your Nathan REED's wife's name is "Hannah" per census record below (listed in between Sanford REED's family and John MERRILL's family) 1850 US Census, Brooklyn, Schuyler Co., IL Nathan REED, age 38, Occ-Cooper, b NY Hannah REED, age 35, b ME Rufus REED, age 15, Occ-Cooper, B OH Harrison REED, age 13, b OH John F. REED, age1, ME (Maine--interesting...Perhaps Hannah is a "Merrill", named after her mother Hannah Merrill, as John and Hannah Merrill were born in ME, per the 1850 census I transcribed in the email I sent earlier ??) --after this 1850 census, your Nathan REED family seem to have dropped the Map ! Exception-- I found a Harrison REED (possible son of Nathan REED-above, the right age-23, farmer, born Ohio on the 1860 Census--IN JAIL in Marion, Marion, OH... Also found-- Illinois Public Land Purchase Records (ancestry.com)- REED, Sanford - Section NWSE - Price $125 - Total 5000 - Date 06 November 1840, Volume 697 - Page 125 - 4,000 acres REED, Sanford E2SE - $125 - 10000 - 06 November 1840 - 697 - 125 - 8,000 acres (this is all the info listed on this record/Diana) Please comment back on Hannah REED, wife of your Nathan REED. Thank you, Diana Sandi wrote: > Thanks Diana, > I'd love that. Can you send me the birth years of the other Reeds > nearby -- there should be Cordells nearby also.
