    1. Re: WILLIAM READ of HALIFAX CO. NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Hi, I have been circling the Read/Reid/Reed family of Halifax Co. NC for some time now. My Jesse Reid (b.1803) was the son of John Clement READ, who changed the name to REID when the family arrived in NC from VA. Jesse is said to have two brothers--Green (went west to work on the stagecoaches) and Nathan. Jesse had a son named William Fletcher Reid, and I have suspected that the name William figured in the Reid family somehow. Also Jesse's brother Nathan Reid had a son named William Emory C(ottrell?) Reid. I am going to forward to you some messages that involve the Halifax Co. NC family. But here is the 1790 census: 1790 HALIFAX CO. NC CENSUS HALIFAX DIST. 1. Richard or Charles & childhood illnesses
    2. My husbands great grandparents were Susan Mildred Reed born January 6, 1860, and died Oct. 30, 1896 and George Washington Snider, born 1844. We know little about either of them. George was born in Indiana. We know his mothers name was Matilda. And, think he fathers name was also George. George and Susan were married in 1876. They lived in Macon County, Missouri. We do know that George's step father was Jonah Ruberson. We did find some information written in another family members wedding book where family tree information was written that indicated Susan's father was Richard A. Reed. But, the space for her father was left vacant. We also found a Missouri census for 1900 in which Charles T. or J. Reed was living in the home of George Snider. But, this would have been after the death of Susan. He was listed as being sixty-one years of age and being born in Virginia. His birth year was listed as 1836. That would have meant he was twenty-four when Susan was born. Now to get to the childhood illness -- My father in law would have been a grandchild of Susan and George. He was one of three boys. The eldest John married but never had children. His younger brother had some sort of illness that apparently occurred when he was about ten or eleven. He eventually died at the age of twenty-one. My mother in law said she thought he might have had tuberculosis of the bone. But, my father in law was about nine when he had something wrong with his legs. Said if he got up from his school desk, his legs would not work for a while. This lasted about a year, and he missed so much school that year that he had to repeat the fourth grade. Did find a letter written by his younger brother stating that he was again able to walk a little bit, and that he could again ride his bike after his dad installed training wheel again. But, apparently that was short lived, and he was bedfast most of the time. I am just curious as to whether he might have actually had some sort of dystrophy or if there was some connection with his brothers leg problems. Wondered if anyone knows of anything like this in the Reed family? We would also love to find out any information anyone might have about Susan or her background. Another family member thinks she might have traveled somewhere for some sort of medical treatment. We know of no one else in family with medical problems of this type. But, another curious thing, is that my father in laws older brother never had children. My father in law only had one. And, we adopted our son. Nadine Snider

    1. SLAVES
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I have just posted on the Archives web page for Rowan Co. NC a listing of my John Pool's slaves from an account book 1832-43. These 15-20 names turned up in my research of wills, loose estate papers, etc. It is very difficult for African American researchers to find their ancestors and that is why I posted the slaves names (first names only, that is all I had). Since my ancestor's slaves lived in Rowan Co., NC, that is where I posted them on the internet (Rowan Archives page). I would urge all of you who have turned up a name here and there in your research to do the same thing I did. I have received thanks from several researchers of their slave ancestors for my efforts. To find out how to do this, you should contact the coordinator of the web page in the county where your ancestor lived and give all possible information--sale of slaves for instance. I know the coordinator of Rowan Co. NC prefers this information to be in a Word document saved in Plain text format, rather than the refular Word formatting (not hard to do at all). There might be a site somewhere on the internet where slaves' names can be entered all in one place, but I haven't found it yet. However, most modern day researchers have an idea of the state and perhaps the country where their ancestors came from. Betty Pace
