Dear Merlene, I immediately noticed the name Clement (1st son) in the children of Josiah Reed of NC, then TN--this suggests to me that a Clement Reid was his father.. I have a JOHN CLEMENT READ/REID (he changed the name to Reid upon coming to NC from VA). I suspect that his wife's name was Elizabeth or Eliza because that name pops up in the grandchildren. I come from the line of JESSE REID (b.abt. 1803 in NC)--through his daughter JULIA ANN REID (b. 1825 in Guilford Co., NC), Jesse had brothers named Nathan and Green (perhaps more)--all we know of Green Reid is that he went west to work on the stagecoaches. The name William seems to occur often in this family also. I also believe there is some relationship to a Robert Reid in NC, but I don't know what it is. It is possible that JOHN CLEMENT REID had brothers named Nathan, Green, and William, if we go by traditional naming patterns. Have you ever heard that your family originated in VA first? There is a story that a group of Lunenburg/Charlotte/Brunswick VA READs left VA about mid-1700s and went into adjoining NC counties. They probably spread out from there, as NC was then open to settlement. The story is that the name John Clement (from the Clement Reads of VA--there were several) was attached to each generation in honor of the patriarch of the family (Clement READ of Charlotte Co., VA, a very illustrious VA family). Do you have any idea which county in NC Josiah was in before heading to TN. I have tried to research all the Clement Read/Reids in NC and did find some--the Read/Reid family owned land in NC probably before the move to NC.. Unfortunately I can't make a direct connection. Researching the John Reids in NC is overwhelming. I would suggest that you search the NCGenWeb archives for Josiah Reed or Reid or Read. You might get lucky because Josiah is less common than John. Go to www.usgenweb.com, click on NC, and you will find a line to the NCGenWeb search engine. You can then type in "Josiah Reid," etc. He might have owned land, held office, etc., before heading for TN. Fascinating story about James Frank Reed and the KKK. Good for him! You might go to the Texas Gen Web site and search the archives for him--possibly there were newspapers articles about this incident at the time. I had a book on interlibrary loan for a short while: "The Reads and Their Relatives, Being an Account of Colonel Clement and Madam Read of Bushy Forest, Lunenburg County, Virginia, their Eight Children, their Descendants, and Allied Families." This book is written by ALICE READ (MRS. SHELLEY ROUSE), 1930, Johnson & Hardin Press, Cincinnati. It is owned by Hampton-Sydney College. p. 427-8 Covering the Frederick Carr Moore (of Norfolk, VA) July 8, 1886 marriage to Anne (Nannie) Cabell McIlwaine (b. Sept 3, 1861), Postmistress of Warrenton, NC for more than thirty years, The Moores were northern people who came South because they liked the climate, and settled near Norfolk, VA. This couple had 4 children: Turner Wharton Moore (b.1887); Nannie Cabell Moore (b.1891); James Carr Moore; Sarah McIlwaine Moore (b. 1896), married Feb 6, 1923 to Fitzhugh Read of Mecklenburg Co. VA, son of Hon. Stephen READ of Mecklenburg VA and his wife (Miss Wright of Palmer Springs, VA). They had a son named FITZHUGH TREZVANT READ, JR. (new paragraph but under this group) HON. STEPHEN READ was a Capt. Co. F., 14th VA Regt., CSA, succeeding his cousin, Capt. Farrar, who was killed at Gettysburg. After the [Civil] War he represented Mecklenburg [VA] in the House of Delegates and the State Senate for many years. He was a son of WILLIAM H. READ (d.1880) and Martha TURNER; son of CLEMENT READ (d.1841), who came to Mecklenburg Co. VA, from Charlotte or Lunenburg VA about 1800, with his wife, who was ELIZABETH QUARLES. This CLEMENT READ was one of eight children, all of whom moved in a great trek, tradition has it, with wives, slaves, cattle and household goods, headed for territories further south; however, when they reached the region of Mecklenburg Co., VA., and the adjoining North Carolina counties, they were too pleased to go on, and settling in that region, formed a wide-reaching and influential connection. Of one of them, MR. NATHAN READ, son of JAMES R. READ (will prob. July 8, 1799) and his wife, "who was a daughter of the Averly who founded the Averly plough works in Clarkesville VA, which are now in Louisville and said to be the largest ploughworks in the world," we have a glimpse in the letters of Dr. Hoge. Their comfortable house and luxurious table were the subject of his enthusiastic enconium when he was living as a young tutor in their family. The connection of this branch of READs with the family of Col. CLEMENT READ of Lunenburg has not been traced but they have a tradition that such connection exists, and the males of Mecklenburg [VA] and Carolina are big blonde men, very like the READs of Charlotte Co.. (the author's footnote: Mr. William Read Turner, grandson of Susan A. T. Read (the sister of Capt. Stephen Read), who married Stephen Turner of North Carolina and had John Read Turner (1839-1904), who married second: Frances Lucas Irby of Lunenburg, is investigating this line and hopes eventually to discover his missing link.) The above is included in a major division/section of the book headed: COL. ISAAC READ I and SARAH EMBRA I could find no further reference to Dr. Hoge, and the book has no bibliography. I looked for the names in our line (Nathan, John, Jesse, and Green) and this reference to Nathan caught my eye since it was the only one in the index. Nothing on Jesse or Green READ/REID. There are even some READs in NC census reports in the early 19th century. There was a JESSE REID who married a PHEBE HOWERTON in Guilford on 19 May 1864, bondsman Wm. A. Linds. Jesse Reid (age 67) is living alone with Phebe (age 50) in the 1870 census in Forsythe Co., NC--occupation shoemaker. This has to be our Jesse with his 3rd wife. I wonder if possibly Phebe Howerton was a Howerton widow since she would have been in her 40s when she married Jesse in 1864, if you believe the 1870 census for her age of 50. Seeking information on Nancy Reed's parents. Nancy married Blanch Duncan, Sr. His parents are John Duncan and Elizabeth Holtzclaw. Blanch was born in 1775 in or around Faquier County, Virginia. Nancy was probably born around the same time period. Blanch and Nancy had a son named Spencer (Spensor) Duncan and he married Annie (Anna) Akers. Their daughter Nancy Duncan had two children, Mary A. Hello everyone, Back last week I posted the REED and YOUNG names to their surnames list, for the Freedmen Project. I noticed the neither one posted to there archives. I contacted both list admin to make them aware of the Rootsweb problem. Finally tonight I see the REED name is in the archive. But the YOUNG name still has not shown up yet. You's will just have to keep ckecking the YOUNG list archive, for the reports. I want to take this time to thank "all" of you for your comments and suggestions. As far as the Freedmen Project surname reports, well they will only be posted to the surname list owners list at Rootsweb in FREE genealogy.. You can find COMPLETE files of the FREEDMEN DAWES ROLL and OK CENSUS in any of your State Freedmen list, east of the Mississippi. With excption to those states above NY. I hopefully will be posting them this weekend and also the FOREMAN surname. Next month I will do all the states west of the Mississippi and four other territorys of America. Signing Off: Bright Star Freedmen Project
Is there a similar site for those who were not ordained. I have heard that my gr.gr.grandfather was supposedly a circuit riding Methodist minister. He was also a physician and apparently would ride the circuit when no minister was available Checked records earlier and he does not seem to have ever been ordained. Nadine
Recently I wanted to find a source for early Methodist church records. This is not an answer to all questions, but I found it an interesting site to visit. http://www.gcah.org/Searching.htm Doris Reed Forsyth

Hello List Admin and Members, I would just like to take the time to THANK all of you for your wonderful post. Wether good or bad, all of your opinions count to me. I have many list to still work on and I learn from what you all teach me. I am a geneologist with info that has not yet reached the web, and my intention was to get it to all of you in FREE GENEOLOGY. My intention was also to get it into the ROOTSWEB archives. Rootsweb has been a tool for geneologist , that allows us to share and have the means to connect our family's freely. I owe them alot. And I also owe every poster who has taken time to post. I want you all to know that I plan on answering each and every post that was sent to me, asking me questions and all of that sort of stuff. I exspecially want to thank all of you LIST ADMINISTRATORS who have allowed the info to reach the Rootsweb archives. It will be there for generations to come. There is so much more coming out of Washington DC about the FREEDMEN. It has been long overdue. I remember back before Ex President Clinton left office and he made the statement that the FREEDMEN RECORDS needed to be indexed and taken care of. Well as a young Freedmen researcher, I have had some of the best folks to work with from Washingtion . I have been told that there is much more to come, at a later date. Last but not least, my work on your list at this time is complete, so please if you have any questions, and cannot reach me on the list. please contact me at [email protected] I thank you all for your patience . Please visit the link below. Bright Star Freedmen Project Click here: Ancestry.com - Freedmen's Bureau Records Preservation Act Signed into Law On Monday, November 6, President Clinton signed into law the Freedmen's Bureau Records Preservation Act of 2000 (H.R. 5157, now Public Law No: 106-444). This law ensures preservation of the records of the Freedmen's Bureau. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/art
Hi Everyone, Anyone who would like to have there FREEDMEN family member honered, please fill out the following form, and it will be submitted to those working on the project. You will have to fill in as many answers as possible, as it will affect the report we send back to you. FROM THE FREEDMEN PROJECT: What we want is to compile a list of Freedmen that would have been on the 1838 Removal. Jerry Clark tells me,he's hoping to match the surnames they used with their owners during the Removal period and possibly from there to their wills. If this could be done then we could compile a list of some Freedmen families on the Removal and hopefully then connect them to their later claims and descendants and include them in the honorariums to those individuals. NOTE: I have supplied many of you with names and family application numbers. In reguards to your Freedmen family member. We are now in the process of compiling names for those ancesters that "you want to be remembered." You must list that family members name and application number as well as how it connects up to your geneology. All surnames are needed for the applicant, you are requesting to be considered for the "honorariums." All personal information will be confidental and submitted to those in Washington who are working on the "honerariums" Each name requires a seperate form. As you can see from Jims words above in blue, we are looking to find all the names of those family members who were involved in the 1838 REMOVAL to Indian Territory. You must show your family members line back to the 1838 removal and were they were located at that time. Many of your family members may not have went to Indian Territory or just didn't give their name. But if you know who they are, and want them included in the HONORARIUMS, we need to show how your line goes back to that FREEDMEN. Your source material must be included. Those who cannot show direct desent will also be notified, to either update the application info or the request form will be disguarded. Hi Everyone, Jim Hicks compliled these for your use with the surname reports. GB07 = Gideon Blackburn's school 1806-1807 (Student roster) SPMS = Spring Place Mission School (Student rosters) NSPMS = New Spring Place Mission School (SPMS restablished in the Western Territory after removal. Student rosters) DET# = Detachment number (from various muster rolls, payroll records and ration receipts; which Detachment did they go west on) IHG = Indian Home Guard (Civil war muster rolls) N-Cher = Native Cherokee (1880 & 1890 Census used the following codes: N-Cher Native Cherokee A-White Adopted White A-Del Adopted Delaware A-Shaw Adopted Shawnee A-Col Adopted Colored etc. SB district = Skin Bayou District, CNW (in 1851 this was changed to Sequoyah District) Roll B: Cherokee that emigrated to the western territory after the 1851 Drennen were simply accepted into the Cherokee Nation. Around 1869 the western Cherokee Nation decided to require citizenship application before a committee. "Roll B", and there's a "Roll A" are lists of groups of emigrants that came west after 1851 (these lists were prepared in 1873) but they didn't include ALL of the emigrants, just those that weren't already recognized as Cherokee by 1869. I've found two more such "Roll"s, much smaller, from 1881 and 1883.
