    1. James F. Reed and children
    2. Ric Gordon
    3. I'm looking for my 1st cousin three times removed, James F. Reed, born June 17, 1850 in Trout Creek, St. Clair Co., Alabama (now Ragland). He allegedly died Aft. June 17, 1926 in Albertville, Marshall Co., Alabama. This is the last known place we even know of him. The following is some we do know. Father - Samuel Reed born September 22, 1818 in Georgia, died December 03, 1883 in St. Clair Co., Alabama, near Ragland. Mother - Eliza Gordon born July 30, 1809 in Maury Co., Tennessee, died August 22, 1886 in St. Clair Co., Alabama, near Ragland. They are both buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery, Ragland, St. Clair Co., Alabama. James wrote the following reminiscence in his ledger on June 17, 1926: "I was born June 17, 1850, at Trout Creek, Alabama. I remember a great deal of suffering of the Southland during the Civil War, how my mother and sisters and the neighboring women would spin and weave to make the homespun clothes for the soldier boys. My father was in that war, and I was left at home to help make the living. Although but a boy eleven years old, I wanted to go in his place. I thought he could take better care of my mother than I could. Seeing the neighbor boys fall in line when the drum and fife played "Dixie" for volunteers, I could hardly stand it; I felt a swelling in my heart that I will never feel again. I taught country schools for three or four years, merchandised some, was postmaster at Trout Creek and at Ragland quite a number of years. I have always been a Democrat, having voted in every election since I became twenty-one years old. I have had very good health, for which I am thankful, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South October 17, 1866; joined the Masonic Fraternity in 1873." He inherited the old Samuel Gordon home place in Trout Creek, Alabama (later called Ragland) from his mother, Eliza Gordon Reed. He worked as a school teacher and was said to have pretty white hair. He was always very neat and smoked a pipe and seemed to meditate and be at rest with the world when he had his pipe. In 1909, one of Jim's sons had died of yellow fever while working in the construction of the Panama Canal and his body was returned to Albertville, Alabama for burial. Another son, Sam, was said to be a railroad man on the L&N railroad between Birmingham and Anniston and Calera. His wife is buried in Methodist Church Cemetery, Ragland, St. Clair Co., Alabama. His children were: Mattie G. Reed born Abt. 1873 Lucy V. Reed born Abt. 1875 buried Albertville, Marshall Co., Alabama John M. Reed born Abt. 1877 Samuel Reed William Reed Harris Reed Clarence Reed Joe Reed Thank you very much... Ric Gordon in Texas

    1. Edd census
    2. Spent part of the day today at the Kansas City National Archives. We have a fairly illusive Reed family. We know that my husbands great grandmother was Susan Mildred Reed born in 1860 and died in 1896. We did find a 1900 Missouri census that showed a Charles T. Reed living with her husband. But, that was all we knew. We did not know her mothers name nor any of her siblings. The 1900 1870 Missouri Census Salt springs township, Randolph County, Missouri. Reed, Charles T. age 36 farmer born in Va. E. J. 28 keeping house Ky. John W. 13 C. H. 11 S. M. 9 James T. 7 H. O. 5 The three older children had all been listed as having attended school in the last year. And, all of the children were born in Missouri. The census indicated that neither of the parents could write. And, it indicated that none of the children could either. But, this strikes me as being rather odd. The section indicating they could not read was not checked on anyone. But, could they all read and not write. And, if the children had all been attending school, why could they not write? We did not find out as much information today as we would have liked to. But, I think we have confirmed that the S. M. is probably Susan Mildred Reed my husbands great grandmother and that her fathers name was Charles T. On the 1900 census I was not sure if it was a T. or a J. But, the funny thing is the census taker must have made an error. The name of Charles T. Reed is plain, but something had been written there earlier and then penciled or lined out. Also a blotch on the value of person property column. It looks a 4, but there is a blotch on the paper there too. Looks like it might have read 48. So, now it looks like we know that her mothers initials were E. J. and we have some apparent siblings names. Do any of these names look familiar to anyone. Nadine Snider

If you borrow a month, you will have to add 28-31 days to your days and that can be a tough one to figure. I usually use the number of days in the month prior to the death month. In this case, August, 31 days. If you borrow a year, add 12 months to your months. If you are lucky, your genealogy software has a "date calculator". Look under your menu item for "tools", "calculator", "date calculator". Mine indicates this person was born 24 Oct 1784. So I guess my calculation above is OK. Can't believe I got that right..... 3. Hi, Most people don't own the 1910 census, unless they have it through Ancestry.com. However, I think you can probably get it from your local LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. You can find the nearest one to you by going to www.familysearch.org. There will be a link there showing the various locations. Almost every community of any size has one. You "rent" the census film and have it for about a month. They are very helpful people and won't try to convert you. You should really put your grandfather's name in the subject heading.
