Hi, I had the same problem with the Davis name. One of my husband's ancestors we were told had first name David- it was actually Davis, and he went by Dave.(He was Davis Tutt that was killed by Wild Bill Hickok.) I have Lafayette William Reed's in my family. The elder went by Lafayette, his son went by William or Bill. I'm also finding that several of the Reed's went by their middle names, and I'm having problems finding them by their first names on records. Barb Jensen
Searching around for suggestions from you: I have a brickball (surprise!). My maternal great-grandfather's paternal grandfather has a beautiful obit, a lovely little marriage bond listing (John Ball listed as surety), clearly written Interment card but no parents listed anywhere. To make matters more difficult his name is similar to another in Norfolk in the same timeframe - he is Joshua David, the other is Joshua Davis both surname REED no discernible connection. I have located him, a hatter, in the 1850 Census (last name spelled Read) with wife MaryAnn, mother-in-law Elizabeth Balls (b 1796), another Jas R Crumpler age 19 and children Laura A (age 7), Lloyd T (age 6), Pauline A (4) and Florence (2); in 1870 he is age 49 with wife Mary, age 45, children: Laura, Kate, Alma, Horace, and Pacid (1870 Census, page 62, 1st ward, City of Norfolk). Laura was 24 in the 1870 census and what is odd in the value of real estate it shows amounts for all the children. No other family shows any amounts in that column for the children; in 1880 Census they are with children, Placid (18) and Horace (22), my great-great grandfather, his son Lloyd Thomas Reed having already left the home and married (and living nearby). Placid later married Siefert. I don't know that Horace ever married. They are all buried in Elmwood, Norfolk. What suggestions might you have where I might find some more info? Is there a Will listing that (I know I'm dreaming) that might be indexed, say for his father with his name there. I have seriously researched this fellow for more years than I care to say. Would anyone have any idea where I might go to make some connection, find some parents, etc? I have it suggested to search for deed transactions and church records although I am a bit stumped on those two (esp deeds). Katie
Seeking parents of both William Luther Simpson b1829 and wife Sarah Jane Reed b1837. They married about 1852 and lived in Barbour Co, now WV. thanks... Lyle Corder
Barb, Okay. I'll try to keep an eye on your postings to see if there's any connections. I have some Reeds in Indiana in the 1800's. There names were Isaac Henry Reed and Nancy Louisa Brown. There had 3 children in Indiana. Nancy A. Reed, William Cecil and Isaac Melcom. The boys were Twins. They lived in Henryville,Clark,Indiana. They were there aprox.1970 to 1880. If anyone knows any more on this family let me know. In a message dated 7/14/03 4:31:11 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > I am the nephew of Harry Clifford Reed,Born 1882in Philadelphia,PA. Is that > of interest? I dont believe these are of the same lines , anyway I cannot find a H C Reed. Harry married a Laura Faught in Jackson Ohio, He was apparently the illigitimate son of a Sarah Reed and a man known by last name of Radcliff.I am so hoping someone has some information on any of these people listed. Does anyone know of a site that has old newspaper articles of the Jackson Herald and/or the Wellston Telegram newspapers?
I was helping a family member look for a W.R.Reed and wife Mayme Gunn Reed who were found in OK census records of 1930 (William Reed and wife Mayme, daughter Artie and daughter and another child (female). In 1932 Mr. & Mrs. Reed lost their children to the Colorado Home For Dependent Children where after a time Maxine and Thelma were adopted out and Artie Reed grew up in foster care being forced to use the first name of Nancy and foster parents last name. She is now living in Oregon still wanting to find at least her parents graves or other living ancestor cousins who can help her fill in the blanks. I have lost touch with them as they moved and I went back to school but when I saw your post about W.R. Reed with a sister in Tulsa, Ok it peeked my curiosity. In the court papers Nancy (Artie) got from the court house it listed her father as W.R. Reed I had thought. Her daughter Christine is now doing this research. Her former e-mail addy was [email protected] something. Since she moved this has all changed. If anyone recognizes any of this and knows her current e-mail address I hope they contact her. I believe in the census records it gave Mr. Reed's age as 35 and stated he was born in Arkansas but that his father was born in Tenn. This may or may not be correct info as Mr. and Mrs. Reed took the children and ran knowing social services were coming back to get them and when they found them the police according to Nancy (Artie) were shooting in the woods at her father and her mother was taken into custody. Nancy (Artie) is now in her seventies and has been told that her sister's passed away I think. It would be nice since the state of Colorado denied her her rights to use her own name and have her own birth certificate after becoming of age since she was never adopted could have some closure. It seems very unconstitutional that the state of Colorado could do such a horrible thing and stick to denying her her rights all these years. ----- Original Message ----- From: "barb brown" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 14, 2003 3:22 PM Subject: [REED] Re: Reed's starting in Indiana > Here is the information from William Riley Reed's obit > and funeral notices from Vernon County, Nevada Mo. > > Nevada Daily Mail- Tue.
