Frm a Centennial address given in 1876..excerpt "In the year 1854 D.B. Reavis (David Barton?) put up a circular saw mill nar where the old carding machine now stands, and shortly after sold to Andrew Jackson Lee one acre of land and in the course of a few months a village was born. As the village was nameless the cit- izens got together and decided to give it a name. One proposed "Centreville", another "Starvation Point" (this man had gone without his dinner), another "Pinch-him slyly", still another "Hardscrabble" and ........, but at lat we settled unaminously on "Leesville", after 1st founder". PISGAH is located in the southeast part of Cooper Co. about 17 miles from Booneville. It is the oldest town in the county except Boonville. It was located abt 1830, the Hon. David Jones being the first settler. It had 2 churches, the Christian and Baptist. It had 2 or 3 stores and blacksmith shops, 2 physicians and 1 lawyer. (Hx of Cooper Co, 1876 by Levens p. 137) "It is situated in S 1/2 of NW 1/4 and north 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec. 2, Twp 46 N. Range 16 West and was laid out by JAMES A REAVIS (James Ashley Reavis), June 30, 1836". Feb 27 1861. Secretary was Isham Reavis, Attorney. (the NVLLFR..was never built)" Mt Pisgah Baptist Church Records Cooper Co Mo (Now Moniteau County)..the church was 15 miles NW of California, Mo where Samuel D. Reavis lived. "October 3rd Saturday 1829 The Church met and after devine worship proceded to business. 3rd-The church by request grant Brother enoch Jobe a letter of Dismission. S.D. Reavis, Clerk".
