If this is true then It could be a lead as which David is his father, and as to why some of the family could not be found in NC after the war. Any more info on this? Don

A very nice gentleman[ related through Corn, Capps, Buckner and Roberts families] has taken the time to transcribe much material on Revis Family from Madison Co, including this letter which is part of the Federal archives and used in the North Carolina Civil War Documentary by Yearns and Barrett: Marshall, Madison Co North Carolina July 20 (?) 1863 H.W. Revis: Dear Husband: I seat myself to drop you a few lines that me and Sally is as well as common, and I hope these few lines will come to hand and find you well and doing well. I have no news to write you at this, only I am done laying by my corn. I worked it all four times. My wheat is good, my oats is good. I haven't got my wheat stacked yet. My oats I have got a part of them cut, and Tom Hunter and John Roberts is cutting today. They will get them cut today. I got the first letter yesterday that I have received from you since you left. I got five from you yesterday, they all came together. This is the first one I have wrote for I didn't know where to write to you. You said you hadn't had anything to eat. I wish you was here to get some beans for dinner. I have plenty to eat as yet. I haven't saw any of your pap's folks since you left home. The people is generally well hereat. The people is all turning to Union here since the Yankees has got Vicksburg. I want you to come home as soon as you can after you git this letter. Jane Elkins is living with me yet. That is all I can think of, only I want you to come home the worst I ever did. The conscripts is all at home yet and I don't know what they will do with them. The folks is leaving here, and going North as fast as they can, so I will close. Your wife, till death Martha Revis Lynne Revis
Oh Lynne, what a wonderful letter, gave me goosebumps; we will never know how those people suffered. Thank You. *B
ERROR!!!!! SHOULD HAVE LISTED FANNY'S NAME AS FOLLOWS: FANNY A., Sorry, fingers don't work the way they used to! In a message dated 11/1/2000 5:09:26 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > FANNY A., Sorry, fingers don't work the way they used > to! Joan Great, so now we have three initials :-) A, H. & L I think! But like yours best, fits with Frances/Fanny Angeline!!
In a message dated 11/1/2000 8:39:47 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > First, In "Revis in Madison County" found at the Pack > Library, Hayward Street, Asheville, NC; Chapter 1, > page 4; states "William Revis (1814 -? married Fanny > Shepherd". Believe this is The Revis Family of Madison County, NC by David H. Reece...1983..now added to the Library of Congress Family Histories. David in his research, as well as other family histories, I have frm that line , indi- cate Fanny Shepherd was her name; all census records but one has Fanny, that one has Angeline; she is named in that deed put on the list this am, and also mentioned as Fanny L in her son William C'. Will of 1879, One thing for sure between the 1880 census, the 1880 deed and the 1879 Will; both William N and Fanny L were alive at least thru the date of the census. Now to document, so her family can be researched. *B
Barb, you state we need to document Fanny's full name: First, In "Revis in Madison County" found at the Pack Library, Hayward Street, Asheville, NC; Chapter 1, page 4; states "William Revis (1814 -? married Fanny Shepherd". At the Buncombe County, NC Register of Deeds office there is a deed dated 1/13/1880 stating, "William N. Revis and wife, F.H. Revis." This deed was witnessed by Thomas Revis. Therefore, I assume, and I know I shouldn't, that Fanny's name was Frances (Fanny) Angeline or Angeline Frances Shepherd. I, too, have not located any census of the Shepherd family with her name on it. But, unfortunately when I was in Buncbome County I did not look up the Shepherds. Perhaps sometime in the distant future we will return to Buncombe and do more research. We have now identified members of this family; I hesitate to put complete data on list, and will no longer do so, since it seems to be compromised by others. I will be glad to provide data if this is your lineage, just contact me direct. His siblings were: Filmore m/Beam Liss m/Faddis Mary m/Madie Bell m/Strugle *Barb

Have ck'd out the Shepard families in Buncombe co and she is not there..BUT the census records did not give household mem- bers til 1850, and she was already married by then. She could well have come frm another county, Lynne has located Shephards in Macon co..but there I find no family she could be frm.. then some of families in Buncombe co in addition to coming frm Rutherford Co (which have not investigated to good), Lynne says some came also frm Ashe co. SO DIG IN! :-) Thanks Joan *Barb
I should know, but do not. What is current area where Ragland District in Granville County NC was located, as referenced in 1850 and 60 census?
Revis, Thomas Revis, Thomas S. Revis, Thomas B. Revis, Thomas F. Revis, Thomas C. BUT, of course not available for lookups! Bet most of those in area of Buncombe and Madison counties! *B
They along with other Reavis family members migrated to Indiana, stopping over in Ohio; there their daughter Isabel was born 1836. She married October 2 1855 Ind Thomas James, she was his second wife. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and died January 2 1868 in Madison Co Indiana She and chn went to Missouri, I only have one daughter's name at this time, Mary Ellen who married Columbus Richardson. Isable died 1913 in Maries co Missouri. Have made contact with descendant, so perhaps will obtain more data! *B
Data for son John P. may be on 1880 census, since he is not in family's household. Data for George C may be on 1900 census, since he is in father's household 1880. "IF" they stayed in the area! *B
1850 Joshua 1 1860 Jesse 11 Buncombe co Census records 1870 Jesse M. 21 *So if interpretation of 1850 correct ie Joshua, looks like this was really Jesse Marion(he went by mostly Marion it seems) Need to find data for him. 1850 wf Fanney 1860 wf Angeline 1870-1880 wf Fanney *must be that Fanny was a knickname for Angeline, or just an error in census..we still need to document her full name, incld Maiden name, which all oral fam rec has as Shepherd; but so far have not located a fShepard family in Buncombe co with a Fanney Angeline. Two other sons we need to learn more about are "John P. bca 1847" and "George C. ca1857". One daughter needs researching "Leah E. b ca1844" son "William C. bca1852"..He may have had a son Wm, Jr, and a son Lenis/Lewis H., for sure is mentioned in his will, as is his bro Marion Revis, prob father William Revis' place (mentioned) and his mother Fannie L. Revis. Have no wife's name for him Will was dated 16 September 1879 and proved 18 Nov 1879 in Buncombe co NC Son- Thomas Henry 1842-1921 pretty well researched, some items need clarifying yet, most of which can be determined frm the 1900 census, ie additional chn and/or wife other than Mary Blackwell and Mary Ann Hookes. So DIG IN everyone, lets wrap up this family's research. *B
Barb, you sked for the 1870 Buncombe County census of William N & Fanny household. It is as follows: Family #63 William N. Revis 55 Fannie 55 John P. 23 Jessie M. 21 William C. 18 George C. 13 Leah E. 24 Dacy R 16 (could this be Daisy)
