Posted on: Reavis, Reaves, Reves, Rivis Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/rea/Reavis/72 Surname: Reavis ------------------------- According to the Reavis Book, pg. 297, "We lack the name of his wife, the mother of his children. Late in life he married in Bond County, Illinois, Polly Bickerstaff (or Biggerstaff): the date of their marriage license was December 31, 1827." Pg. 299, " Henry-3 Reavis, by his first wife, had issue: Isham-4 ba 1779. Elizabeth Delilah-4; m William Burgess. Peraby-4; m Joshua Renfro. Mary-4 (Polly); m Aquilla Low." Pg. 305, " Pheraby-4 (Henry-3, Thomas-2) was married May 3, 1813 in Madison County, Illinois, to Joshua Renfro, not long after arrival of her family from Kentucky, when it had moved from North Carolina. He was a son of John Renfro, Revolutionary soldier of Virginia, born in Bedford County of that state, November 12, 1760 and married to Ester in Virginia in 1781. They moved to Barren County, Kentucky, where Joshua Renfro was born January 3, 1796. Young Joshua, making his way to Illinois about the time that Henry-3 Reavis moved his family there, married Pheraby before he attained his eighteenth birthday. The Federal Census of 1820 locates "Joshua Renfro" in Bond County and as having a family that then consisted of the parents, one son "under 21" and "three white females" whose ages are not indicated." Pg. 306, "Joshua Renfro became a resident of Montgomery County, Illinois, and died there intestate on July 30, 1859. The papers of administration show that he owned property in Bond County, and include various receipts in the names of several persons, whose relationship to the deceased is not disclosed. Pheraby Renfro survived her husband and lived to an advanced age. Unfortunately our knowledge of their children is meager. Pheraby-4 and Joshua Renfro had (probably) the following issue: William B. Renfro-5; m Elizabeth Elseba Renfro-5; m William R. Merriam. Hiram Renfro-5; lived to a considerable age. Elizabeth Renfro-5; m Armstrong. Mary Renfro-5; m Portwood. ???? Renfro-5; m William Denton." Hope this helps. Glenda Hawthorne

Curious, we have their marr rec April 1808 Warren co Ky and birth of first son 1809; but note in Hurrican Ch Records 1819 they were remarried. Perhaps first marriage was not in church? *B
Hello Barb and all, This was recently sent to me by Linda Hanabarger who is past President of the Vandalia, Illinois Genealogical Society. She graciously does lookups for people in search of ancestral roots in Fayette Co., Illinois. Thought it might be of interest to you. >>I found an obit for Jennie: >>Vandalia Union 11 May 1911 >>Mrs. William C. Smith b 6 Feb. 1851 New Jersey died 3 May 1911. She m 22 Jul. 1872 William C. Smith. >>Burial was in Evans Cem., Fayette Co. There were 7 children, 3 deceased. survivors were Thomas, Charles, >>Lawrence, Martha Pumphrey and a sister Matilda Burton of Nashville (Washington Co., IL) >>They did not marry in Fayette Co. >>Hope this helps. >>Linda This matches my records: The children of William C. SMITH-6, (Delilah-5, Isham and Mary-4, Henry and Harris-3, Thomas-2) and Jennie LOWRY (LOWERY) were: 1. Andrew Jackson SMITH, Aug. 14, 1873-1892. (died unmarried) 2. Thomas Logan SMITH, Mar. 30, 1875-1916. (married Cora Gilliland July 4, 1900) 3. Flora Alice SMITH, Aug. 24, 1877-1894. (died unmarried) 4. Charles Gilbert SMITH, Oct. 11, 1879-Aug. 6, 1942. (married Stella Mariah Strong Sept. 21, 1905 these were my grandparents) 5. Mary Delilah SMITH, July 28, 1881-1904. (died unmarried) 6. Martha Almira SMITH, Mar. 11, 1885- Mar. 3, 1975. (married Will Pumphrey on Mar. 28, 1911) 7. Lawrence Aubrey SMITH, Nov. 24, 1888-1939. (married ??? no children) Still trying to find out where they were married. Maybe Clinton Co. Illinois, since that is the birth place listed for Thomas Logan Smith on his marriage record to Cora Gilliland. The Illinois Marriage Index does not contain the data for marriages in Clinton County from 1850 to 1875. Will keep digging. Jennie's parents were Thomas and Mary Jamieson LOWRY (LOWERY) (from Ireland). They had four children: Eliza, Jennie, Matilda and Andrew. Cheers, Glenda

Congratulations and thanks. Question, did the obit say they were not married in Fayette co, Il. or did you add that? If as you say, Clinton Co Il marriages are not in the state database; then would for sure ck with that county for same. *B

Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Cemetery was the official name of the place. The land on which the cemetery was founded, was given by my great great grandfather, Judge Robert Simpson and William Smithey. Robert Simpson's oldest son, John Simpson was the first person buried in the cemetery. This was about 1828 or so, I don't have my papers handy. The cemetery today, probably is called the Pioneer Cemetery, because all of the people buried there were pioneers, who came to Missouri. I have the complete list of all the people buried in the cemetery and it reads like the who' s who of pioneer settlers. Several generations of my family are buried there. Just called IRAD (Illinois Archives) to request a search of any Pope Co. records they have on file; they have the marriage records and probate, but not death records. Since Mary & Cannon were married in Illinois, IRAD will, eventually, send copies . . . Chris
