This has been shared by a fellow researcher who has the original letter, written in brown ink on ecru paper. Thanks Millie! This will be excerpts, since parts not legible enough to make complete sentences out of them: Sept 1867 Dear Brother. I sit down try answer your letter written at California (Missiouri). Though I am not able to write at this time and do my self justice owing to my head which is in pain all the time some twenty days I have suffer abundance. I was afflicted with the brain fever have used the pack some a dozen times and head I kept drenched with cold water which so far has saved my life but not it yet will terminate I am constantly in misery though much better it seems hard to remove entirely. Pollly (Mary Bagwell) is well as she usually is tolerable for her age. There is a great deal of sick- ness not in Texas by far than is common hereabout for this ia ...... Edmonds and Catherine (his dau Mary Catherine married Wm Edmonds) lost a few days ago a son Willy, some 15 years old with fever. I was then bedfast. They broke at one time the fever on him, but it rose again (with water) Edmonds got scared and would have a doctor and give him calamil it corroded the stomach and bowels and killed him Catherine takes it very hard indeed. ....peaceable yet the corrupting influence of the war and camp life remains more or less and is seen among the churches of professed christians...... several was baptized and among them Wiley Edmond who we no/know has been housed in the household of God a great consolation ought to be, to his parents. ...Myself and you(Samuel D) and sister Doyle (sister Mary married Allen Doyle) is all remains now to the thirteen children (of his parents David and Jemima). *Barb
Lynne suggested she might be Eleanor d/o John-4 and Edy Beck; so checked database and she is listed in John and Edy's household 1870 as servant, Elender Johnson with a dau Betty 4. So guess not a servant to John and Edy, as I thought, but their daughter. ONE SOLVED! *Barb

This letter is contained in The Reavis Family Book by Marie Reavis Hall, but just found it online, frm Collection of Works of Abraham Lincoln, edited by Roy P. Basler. Isham was born 1836 Il died 1914 Nebraska He was a lawyer, served as Judge of the US Court in the territory of Arizona, under President Grant. The family has has the original letter frm Abraham Lincoln. This is for those of you who do not have access to The Reavis Book "November 5, 1855 My dear Sir: I have just reached home, and found your letter of the 23rd ult. I am from home too much of my time, for a young man to read law with me advantageously. If you are resolutely determined to make a lawyer of yourself, the thing is more than half done already. It is but a small matter whether you read with any body or not. I did not read with any one. Get the books, and read and study them till you under- stand them in their principal features; and that is the main thing. It is of no consequence to be in a large town while you are reading. I read at New-Salem, which never had three hundred people living in it. The books, and your capacity for understanding them, are just the same in all places. Mr. Drummer is a very clever man and an excellent lawyer (much better than I, in law-learning); and I have no doubt he will cheerfully tell you what books to read, and also loan you the books. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more im- portant that any other one thing. Very truly Your friend. A. Lincoln" Abraham Lincoln's emphasis was on self education. *Barb

Since I messed up the info on Sarah C. ..will try and straighten it out here: Now I believe that Sarah age 22 on the 1850 Marshall co census, with Isaac, was w/o Isaac, who was son of Wm and Hendricks. The 1850 and 1860 Madison co Ind census of William and Hendricks has a Sarah C. age 6 1850, age 17 1860; this must be the daughter of Wm and Hendricks; placing her birth yr ca1844. sorry for the messup! *Barb
