    1. [REAVIS] Belle Reavis to Rachel Steelman Reavis Paine.
    2. Last of letters frm Millie. Thanks again Millie, we have really enjoyed a look into the past! May the 27th 1864 Mrs. Rachel Paine Dear Cousin It is with pleasure that I now answer your kind and very welcome letter which I received some days ago I would have answered it sooner but there has been such excitement up I have not had sence enough to write to any person the Bush whackers are very thick up here they are a going all through the country taking horses - but they has not - any of them made their appearance here yet and I do not - think will soon I do not apprehend much danger no though their will be 4 com- panies of the 7th in here this evening then I think will be safe particu- larly if one of them comes. Rachel where is your husband at now you must write me word how William (would guess this referes to Wm s/o Susan, since Rachels Wm was not born til 1883 *B) is getting along and Grand Father & Mel & Avery tell them all to write to me let me know what has become of Susan Eliza and how her eyes are getting I do feel so sorry for her. By the way last night I found in 1850 Cooper Co Mo census that name of wife for James Overton was "MINERVA"..; would think he likely had at least two wives since I have found two chn for him Wm David b 1852 and Lewis Overton 1871. *Barb

    1. [REAVIS] Samuel D. Reavis...date of death...
    2. Would like to enlist help of some of you researchers to determine the correct dod for Samuel D. The Reavis Family Book says he died at age 85..so if he was born Feb 1792 as is said, he would have died in 1877. I have another rec, frm somewhere? that give his dod as Mar 1877. BUT his own dau Susan in a letter (Dec 26 1875) to her neice Rachel Steelman Reavis Paine..says "since Papa's Death which was a year the twelvth of the the present month" making it Dec 12 1874! Perhaps the date of Mar 1877, is frm some estate records; have run into this before, one that comes to mind, I believe, was David-3. He is on the 1860 census Johnson Co Mo.,Samuel D 68 ,Melvina 18 and Rachel 12 (gdau), which does indicate his wife was deceased (rec say she died June 1857..which presents another prob, I have she died in Illinois? was it Mo?) 1870 census Moniteau Co Mo. his household consisted of himself, Susan and her son Willie... Would be ineteresting also, to know just where he died Cooper Co, Johnson Co., or Moniteau Co, Missouri? Thanks for your help. *Barb

    3. Former Family Members and Hardships Remembered For most people, Christmas Day is a joyous occasion. However, for many it brings memories of family members that are no longer with us, and hardships that we may have experienced during the year. For the residents of Flat Rock Community, it must have been a sad time indeed on Christmas Day in 1879, as that was the day that one of the community's most respected residents passed away. Lewis Pleasant Reavis was 75 years old, having been born in 1804. Like many farmers who lived through the Civil War, he experienced financial setbacks. The Census of 1860 shows his personal estate valued at $19,800, while the Census of 1870 shows it to be only $1,000. Hardships with their children (three boys and five girls) were also experienced during the war years. The two oldest sons, Thomas and Samuel, fought in the war, with Thomas having been wounded at Sharpsburg, and Samuel having been captured at Winchester. The oldest daughter, Martha, lost her first child at childbirth and died herself shortly after the war. The next oldest daughter, Lucy, lost her first husband, Alexander Wortham, shortly after the war. So the death of Lewis on Christmas Day in 1879 must have been one more experience that tested the family's faith. Most people that ride down Satterwhite Point Road today are not even aware of the Family Cemetery at the Reavis home place, built in 1790, where Lewis and his wife are buried. In fact, the graves do not even have tombstones. The graves are marked only by granite rocks that are typical of those found in the Greystone area of Vance County. However, the impact that this family has had on Vance County is everlasting. For the following year, 1880, Flat Rock Methodist Church was founded. The youngest son, John Billie, and his wife Rebecca Baskett, were charter members. Additionally, the son Samuel married Sallie Baskett, whose family was instrumental in the founding of Spring Valley Methodist Church, and their grandchildren were active members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. The daughter Lucy and granddaughter Pattie became active members of Brookston Presbyterian Church. The son Thomas married Bettie Best, and they became active members of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. Then! there were the twin girls, Ella and Della. Ella married John Jeremiah Pegram, with that family becoming active members of Cokesbury Methodist Church. Della married George Harris, and the youngest daughter, Mary, married John Vaughan. These families were active in churches in Middleburg. So the next time you ride down Satterwhite Point Road, remember the granite rocks, Lewis Reavis who died on Christmas Day in 1879, and his wife Mary. Many churches today are beneficiaries of the faith demonstrated by these two individuals and their children. However, we do not celebrate Christmas as the day Lewis died. Instead, we celebrate it as the birthday of the person who was the focus and rock of Lewis's faith. David C. Reavis

How did he get to Nebraska > and Don't have a lot of answers for you, but: His bro Alexander was thought to have gone to Alaska to the Gold Rush..and was never heard frm again.. Your James Calvin/clarence supposedly born in NC and died Va, he is buried I believe at the Galax Cemetery in Grayson. John and Alexander the brothers went to Va ca 1852, so it is possible that he was born in NC before they went to Va. James C married Nov 1875 in Madison Co Nebraska to Sarah Walker. Have you ck'd out the Memoirs of Reavistown at the research site, provided by Sue Pearson..go to http:www.angelfire.com/fl3/reavis revis/index.html, and click on the hyperlink...not sure if he is discussed or not. Maybe she is still on the list and can help you. *Barb

    1. [REAVIS] Letter frm Susan Reavis Austin to Rachel Reavis Payne/Paine
    2. No signature on letter, but frm names and data, appears to have been written by Susan. California Moniteau Co Mo Dec 26 1875 (this appears to be correct date) Mrs Rachel Payne Dear Niece I will now try to answer your very kind letter, which came to hand some weeks since. I hope these lines will find you in good health, together with the rest of your Family & Friends, myself and Willie (Susan's son William E. ) are well as usual, you must excuse me for not answering you sooner as I was in the country when your letter came to hand, and have not had time to write till now, I have been so busy sewing from home most all the time I only get a dollar and half a week ought to have three. Today is Sunday and I did not go to church and it seems like a long day to me Willie comes in and eats and out again so you might say I was alone almost. however, I am used to being so, well yeterday was Christmas and seemed to be a quiet one, the Methodist and Christian Churces had their usual feast, Friday night for the Children, Willie went I did not, they had a splendid time I suppose, well, Rachel Mary and Sam live in Pettis Co They wrote to me for me or Amanda one to come two or three weeks ago to do their winter sewing, so I thought it suited best for Amanda to gone and she went she came back since and staid a day or two and is not gone to her Mothers and is going frm there to see Lewis I don't know when she will be home again she left Sams folks all well thinks Mary has the smartest baby she has ever saw. I have not had a letter frm Sue since I wrote to you before have been expect- ing one for some time. Tom Griner's wife died two or three weeks since I don't know what ailed her she left two Children, I have not heard frm your Uncles Overtons for more than a month I thought some of the Family would have been down las week but they did not come I would have gone to see your Aunt Caroline yesterday, but when I come to settle my Taxes I had only ten cts left so I had to stay at home. I have never been to see her since they moved to the Country. I have seen her twice since Pap's Death which was year the twelvth of the present month (now there is something wrong here with these dates, if references death of Samuel D..ck'g *B) its like you say the connexion is so scattered hardly any two are together. Your Uncle Leander hardly ever comes to see me and his WIFE don't come at all she is so afraid they will have to take care of me I hope she may take care of those nearer home to her, tell William I hope when he marries he will not get a Woman that is a fraid to see any of his connexion, for fear, they will want something for I like to see kinfolks friendly enough to visit one ano- ther when they live near enough. Tell cousin Lizzy-if I was as near to her as you are, I would hunt her up and visit her. I would like to have a line from her occasionally any how I not had a letter frm Matt since she went to New York but hear frm her once in a great while. Well I see my sheet will be filled soon and I have not written much news yet I wanted to hear frm your Uncle Overtons before I sent this letter to you he talked of send- ing Willie Large back to Bill when I was there I don't know whether he had or not for the last year and a half he has not wrote a word nor sent a dime to him since he has been there, he is not a man but a dog I think a---way with such a man. Monday morning I went to church last night, it was quite cold as the wind blew frm the North, we have had pleasant weather most of the time this winter, well Rachel I hope you had a merry Christmas and wish you a happy new year, I thank you for the stamp and quarter also they came in good time you must write again soon. (following is added on the top of the second page upside down to the rest of the letter) I forgot to tell you when you finish painting and dry your pictures you should Varnich all the colored parts on the same side the paint is put on, if there is anything you don't understand let me know. *When get time, sure would like to identify all of the people mentioned, sounds like normal family, with family problems :-) Hope to put copies of the orig letters on the Reavis/Revis research site eventually, and try and verify dates, etc.; this is great of Millie to share these, I find them absolutely fascinating. Merry Christmas! *Barb
