    3. Thank you for your reply.....I know from doing genealogy for a long time that all names have variations. I did not know Rootsweb was keeping them seperated on the email lists. I had not noted a RAYNER email list.....I will have to check then. I joined here because I did know of the RAYNOR surname on LI and being the RAYNER bros may have come into NY Port and stayed awhile in the area while awaiting citizenship. Who knows at this point they have been recorded as RAYNOR and not as my father-in-law insists as RAYNER, thus being why I cannot find them anywhere, so that is why I joined the RAYNOR list to check all paths of research. 1. [RAYNOR] The RAYNOR Sunmane - variant spellings
    2. Karima
    3. Good morning! Regarding the variations of the spelling of the name. The following is an explanation by Gerald Van Sise Raynor, Raynor Family Genealogist (Edward Raynor Branch), as to the various spellings of the name: "Do not put much stock into signature spelling variations. I have many old documents from 1761 – 1825, etc. In the same family, you might find RANER, RYENER, REYNOR, and RAINER. If the signer could not write his name, then the scribe used his own judgment. I've even seen RHEGNIER". Robert, our first known family member signed his will REYNERE. That is the only time I have ever seen an "e" on the end. "In general, though, RAINER and REYNER show up in early documents. By the time the Revolutionary War was over the spelling that was most often used was RAYNOR or sometimes RAYNER." ====================================================== I have tried to convince RootsWeb to combine the different spellings of this name into one list, but apparently there is disagreement as to the "Correct" way to spell our surname and since no one will agree, they intend to keep the lists separate. My best advice would be to join all of the variant lists, since I cannot combine them. Hope this helps, Karima mailto:quest@springnet1.com =========================================== THE RAYNOR FAMILY WEB SITE http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/Raynor.htm List Administrator of: RAYNOR Surname Discussion List (RAYNOR-L http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/RaynorListWelcome.htm GRAMMER Surname Discussion List (GRAMMER-L) http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/GrammerMailingListWelcome.htm Jackson County, Illinois Discussion List (ILJACKSO-L) http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/JacksonCoWelcome.htm

    1. [RAYNOR] Anyone else on this list looking for RAYNER from Eng to US in mid-1800's
    2. crystalwoman
    3. Hi-I joined this list thinking RAYNER's would also be looked for. I have no idea if they are connected to RAYNOR yet as we have very little on them. The story we know from oral family history is there were 4 bros coming from Eng to US in search for gold. 2 were supposed to have gone to Canada and other 2 settled in CA while looking for gold. I have not found them on a ship passenger list yet, and supposed at least 2 of them were to have gone around Cape Horn to CA. That was some trip ca.1850..... Anyhow, I had found note of 4 RAYNER's getting their Citizenship papers around mid-1800's in Philadelphin PA and need to follow up on that to see if that is them. Any other data though would be helpful to me. And just wondered if there was anyone else here searching RAYNER. I remember some of the references to RAYNOR's on LI, as I was born ca.1947 and raised in Suffolk Co, LI and moved away in mid 1986. I remember RAYNOR's Beach on Lake Ronkonkoma, a great place in the 50's and early 60's to go. 3. Hi Wilma - I do not have information on Thurston Raynor's daughters, but the noted genealogist, Donald Lines Jacobus, had this to say about Abigail Raynor and John Scott in his article, "Raynor Notes - Long Isand," which appeared in the AMERICAN GENEALOGIST: "Abigail m. before 1667, John Rose, b. ca 1638, d. 17 Apr 1697, son of Robert and Dorothy Rose. We simply do not know how many times John Rose married, but his will dated 4 May 1696 names sons John, William and Martin, who seem to have received their portions, sons David and Thomas (wife Abigail is called their mother), son James, and daughter Hannah (under 18) (William S. Pelletreau, 'EARLY LONG ISLAND WILLS,' 150-153). Since his wife in 1667 was a daughter of Thurston Raynor, she was quite likely Abigail, and probably mother of Hannah (b. after 1678) as well as of David and Thomas. If the Raynor wife was mother of all the children, she would be nearer the age of John Rose, and may have been the eldest child of Thurston by Martha." Hope this helps.
