I would like to know if anyone out there is a Ratliff that descends from this family. I have earlier data if anyone is interested. Thanks DOnna Bartholow 5-1)Joshua J. Ratliff and Lucretia Hamp, Kesiah Foster, and Frances E. Brawley Joshua J. Ratliff was the first born child of John and Fereby Ratliff. He was born 1822 in Jefferson County, Alabama. He married first Lucretia Hamp born 1812 in SC on 3 Jan 1841 in Blount County. They had the following children: 5-1-1) William Ratliff born 1842, 5-1-2) Phereby Ratliff born 1844 never married, lived in house of uncle James Brown. 5-1-3) John J Ratliff, born 1846 md. Matilda C. Scott. 5-1-3-1) Aaron J. Ratliff b. 1868 5-1-3-2) Mary F. Ratliff b. 1871 5-1-3-3) John T. Ratliff b. 1873 5-1-3-4) Charles Ratliff b. 1875 5-1-3-5) James M. Ratliff b. 1879 5-1-4) Lugania Ratliff born 1847, 5-1-5) James T.Ratliff born 1849 was raised by his uncle James Brown. These children are from the 1850 Alabama Census. There may possibly have been other children, however we have not found Joshua in the 1860 census to verify. 5-1-6) Polly Ann Rebecca Ratliff. Somewhere between 1849 and 1856 Lucretia died and on 15 May 1856 Joshua married Kesiah Foster in Blount Co. Alabama. They had at least one child, Polly Ann Rebecca born 1858 who married SHJ Smith on 12 Sept 1875 in Morgan Co. Alabama permission granted by her father Joshua Ratliff. Kesiah died between 1858 and 1859 and Joshua married for the third and final time to Frances E. Brawley on 26 Oct 1859 in Jefferson County Alabama. Their marriage license states that they were married in the home of Obediah Herndon. While to date parents of Frances have not been located, in the 1880 census she states that her father was born in Virginia, and her mother in South Carolina. There is only one Brawley family with descendents located in Virginia during 1800-1820. Family history states that Frances mother was Indian or part Indian, which might account for lack of public records on her family. The Herndons however must be some relation to Frances as they followed Frances and Joshua to Morgan County. They also named one of their children Obediah. Also a JA Herndon signed the marriage bond of Eliza Adeline the first born child of Joshua and Frances. Census records from 1860 Alabama show that Obediah Herndon was born 1834 in SC, wife Julia A. born 1840, son James born 1857, daughter Margaret born 1859. It is suspected that Julia A is sister of Frances. Joshua bought land in Morgan County Alabama in 1879 next to Teletha Ford Tucker McCrary and is found in the 1880 Morgan Co. Census. His occupation was listed as blacksmith. Joshua and Frances E. are known to have had these children. 5-1-7) Eliza Adeline Ratliff born 5 Jan 1861 married 8 Feb 1880 to George R. Thornton died 10 Feb 1933, 5-1-8) Edward Ratliff born 1864 killed by a team of horses, 5-1-9) Obediah Ratliff born 1868 died between 1870 and the 1880 census, 5-1-10) Charles Ratliff born 1870 married Mosura A. Tucker on 25 Mar 1892 in Morgan Co. Al. he moved to Vernon, TX, 5-1-11 & 12) Martha Ratliff born 22 Mar 1871 and twin sister Mary Ratliff , Martha died around the age of 4 years of age. Mary married George Washington McCrary on 6 Jan 1887 in Morgan County Alabama and moved to TX.
