    3. Once again I am attempting to find my great Uncle GEORGE RATLIFF. He was born in Texas, possibly Florence, Williamson County area some time between 1869 - 1870. I have no idea of his wife's name or where they actually wound up, but think some where in OKLAHOMA because in 1926 - 27 two of his children were attending school in OK. City, OK. As was their 1st cousin, Thelma C. RATLIFF. George had at least two children, and the daughter was named FRANCES. My mother at one time knew their names, but when I began to ask, her memory was fading and she could only remember the girl. George was believed to have something to do with the legal system, either a lawman or working for the law. He may have been political? George's folks - his father was Joseph RATLIFF, b. 1835 in (MO or AR.. more evidence for AR). and his mother was Francis HARRELL (that maiden name seen as HAIRRELL, HAIREL, HEAREL, etc.) Francis died a young woman, in 1886, leaving George around 16 years old at the time of her death.. within two years Joseph, George's father, had re-married to a widow with a daughter and I do not know absolutely without any doubt, but I think that widow "may" have been Sarah A. Wood(s). (they were living in Bell County, TX) George's siblings were: William, died very young and was never mentioned much Louisa "Lu", she married 1. James W. Anderson, 2. William Wright Mary, she married 1. George Howard, 2. Frank Biggers Thompson "Tom", I think Tom married a gal named May. Lee, we never were quite sure what happened to Lee Samuel, he married Glen Ruth Hutchinson Joseph, he married Elsie Rogers Ninnie Anner, died a young girl buried Florence, TX infant son, we call ANDREW.. though we can not say that was his given name, only that is what we have always referred to him as.. "Andy" Though over time, I have come to think possibly that ANDY was actually Ninnie's nick name but some how my mother gave it to the infant son who died and assumed his name to be ANDREW.. ? he is buried in Florence, Florence Cemetery, Williamson County, Texas along with Francis, and Ninnie Anner. Always HOPEFUL. Kelly kelleen2@icehouse.net

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RGCBAEB/887 Message Board Post: I would like to know if the Lucinda listed in the 1860 Wayne County Iowa Census as living in the home of Andrew J. Davis, (b. abt. 1834 in Ky d. before 1880 census). and Mary E. was Lucinda Ratliff Zentz b. 7 Jan 1847 in Va. Lucinda Ratliff Zentz married Levi Zentz in the home of A. J. Davis 19 Nov. 1865. I would like to know where her sister Mary Ellen Ratliff Davis (b. 1 Apr. 1851 in Butler Coungy Ohio) was living before her marriage to John W. Davis b. Oct. 24, 1845 in Jackson county, Indiana and if John W. Davis was related to Andrew J. Davis. I would like to know how Lucinda and Mary Ratliff came to be in Iowa. We can't find their parents, Wm. and Nancy Nichols Ratliff on any census. Censuses that Lucinda was on after her marriage say that she and her parents were born in VA. I would also like to know if the Jesse Ratliff family who lived in Wayne County Iowa from the 1850s until 1890 was related to Lucinda and Mary Ratliff.

    1. [RATLIFF] dna Gen family Testing/Poca & Va Dare
    2. Barry Wetherington
    3. Hi Jack & ALL, While Jack's point (see below for Jack's point) may be at least partially valid, it is not relevant to the issue I was and am discussing - We CAN likely determine whether we are descendants of the families of Va Dare and of Poca. Any descendants of the FAMILY of Va Dare, should they exist, which is quite likely, and it isn't known by any accepted source, one way or another, whether there are or are not any DIRECT descendants of Va Dare herself, might be determined by dna testing, of the type I discussed (& see extended discussion below). If there were, such descendants of Va Dare herself, would probably also have a significant dna constituency of NA (Native American) dna, perhaps of the 'Croatoan' tribe or nation (as Jack noted, the 'message' carved in the Lost Colony tree). This tribe lived not too far (particularly by internal waterways) from the Powatan tribe of Poca, and from Jamestown. There is some, but definitely not dispositive, evidence of lighter skinned, lightered haired members of those tribes. But that is a digression from the Issue. The Issue is whether dna could assist in determining familial relationships to the families of Va Dare and of Pocahontas. Va Dare was the only daughter of the marriage of Ananias Dare and his wife Eleanor White, d/o the Lost Colony's chief, John White. Ananias Dare also had a son, John Dare, almost certainly not also a son of Eleanor, probably from a prior marriage. That has been established by a US federal govt study, a (flawed OCR) copy of the report of which I posted to the Dare-L List (and other sites) over a yr ago. In the Perogative court of England, two named men 'fought' legally over the right to be appointed as John's guardian. There are court documents, cited in the US study, in support of this genealogical fact. The point, the Issue, is that we do presently know of relevant dna avail from Poca descendants, and believe we will be able to establish direct dna descendancy from the family of Va Dare's parent's families, including of John and Eleanor White, and of Ananias Dare, including of his son, Virginia Dare's half brother John. While nothing is certain, the likelihood is quite significant that, if there are blood descendants of Poca & Va, we will eventually be able to establish them to a high degree of probability, if not absolute certainty. And the downside is near zero - actually, a few cotton tipped swabs of mouth saliva and $200 plus postage, is the 'risk'. I'm going to determine in a few months, depending on research results of the efficacy of these tests, whether to participate, depending whether the results could be used for familial determinations. Remember, the test results could also be used to refute a Gen line thought to establish your gen lines, or to call into question the 'purity' of your bloodlines. Some might be deterred by that possibility. In the meantime, there is an extended discussion of the kit and use of dna in Gen research below, along w/a Link for more info. Best, Barry On Sat, 9 Feb 2002 11:07:19 -0500 "JackVButler" <jackvbutler@worldnet.att.net> wrote: No, there is no chance that the Dare line that married into the Witherington line descends from Virginia Dare. There is, in fact, absolutley no evidence that anyone descends from her - she was still toddler when she, along with the rest of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke disappeared. It is not unreasonable to assume that when their situation became desparate that the colonists left with one or another of the Indian tribes in the area. But later settlers never found any such evidence, and no one has any real clue as to what happened to them. But Barry clearly likes to think big and to go for the long shots <G>. Here is a blurb about Virginia Dare that I pulled from an on-line site: "The granddaughter of Governor John White, Virginia Dare was the first child born of English parents in the new world. The child's mother was White's daughter Eleanor. Her father, Ananias Dare, served as one of the Governor's assistants. Virginia was born on August 18, 1587, days after the colonists arrival on Roanoke Island. Her baptism on Sunday following her birth was the second recorded Christian sacrament administered in North America. The first baptism had been administered a few days earlier to Manteo, an Indian chief who was rewarded for his service by being christened and named ''Lord''. When Governor White was forced to return to England for supplies, Virginia Dare was less than a month old, and he left with heavy heart, never realizing that he would never see her or any of the other colonists who remained behind again. Leaving the new world and his family behind must have been difficult for White. A secret code had been worked out, that should they leave Roanoke Island, they were to carve their new location on a conspicuous tree or post. If the move had to be made because of an attack, either by Indians or Spaniards, they were to carve over the letters or name a distress signal in the form of a Maltese cross. Three years to the month later, White returned to find the word ''Croatoan'' without any cross or other sign of distress. To this day, no one is certain were the lost colony went, or what happened to them. " Extended discussion of the kit and use of dna in Gen research " ============================================================ Make Genealogy Discoveries through DNA ============================================================ MyFamily.com Inc, the leading company for connecting families, and Relative Genetics, a world-class genomics laboratory and leader in establishing definitive biologic relationships through DNA testing and analysis, have entered an exclusive partnership to distribute the Ancestry GenetiKit, the most complete and extensive DNA test available. The partnership and new product combine traditional genealogy with the latest technology making it easier to answer the question: "Where did I come from?" The Ancestry GenetiKit was introduced at GENTECH, the conference for genealogy and technology in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 25, 2002. The test is available exclusively through Ancestry.com, a member of the MyFamily.com network, and can be ordered online at www.ancestry.com/genetics for $219. The home collection kit comes with a swab to painlessly and easily collect a sample of cells from the inside of your cheek, which is then returned to the laboratory where DNA testing is completed within a few weeks. The Ancestry GenetiKit can be used to test for paternal-line relationships through a test known as the Surname Test or Y Chromosome Test. The Surname test analyzes 23 markers making it the highest resolution commercial Y-chromosome test in the world. These markers identify the provider's genetic identity inherited from his ancestors. Other tests available using the GenetiKit include the Mitochondrial DNA Native American Haplotype Test, and Mitochondrial DNA Sequencing Test used for establishing maternal relationships. The genetic identity of the provider will be compared against a database of over 19,000 DNA samples, the world's largest database of genetic genealogical samples. The results that will be reported to the provider include an analysis of the provider's personal genetic identity and a comparison with surnames contained in the database to determine relationships. Ancestry.com users can use their personal genetic identity to find other Ancestry.com users who are living relatives. Furthermore, if a match is determined with another sample in the database, the provider will receive ancestral information on that match including a name, place and date. "By gathering genetic data from populations throughout the world, Relative Genetics and The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, in conjunction with development from the BYU Center for Molecular Genealogy, are building the world's largest database of genetic populations. These populations are sorted by place and time so finding out where and when your genetic ancestors may have lived is easier" said Dr. Scott Woodward, PhD., Professor of Microbiology and faculty member of the Molecular Biology Program at Brigham Young University, Laboratory Director of Relative Genetics. Genealogy has traditionally been done using records of people's names in association with dates and places. Almost every genealogist knows that names change, dates are not recorded, and places can be forgotten. Ancestry.com and Relative Genetics have teamed up to help fill in the missing pieces. "You carry within your DNA a record of your ancestry," said Tom Stockham, CEO of MyFamily.com. "The Ancestry GenetiKit test accesses the only record that never gets lost; your genetic heritage, DNA. By combining those DNA records with more than 1.5 billion names we currently have available online, we will offer our customers an unsurpassed ability to build family pedigrees and establish relationships between distant relatives." 1. [RATLIFF] dna Gen family Testing & Poca & Va Dare
    2. Barry Wetherington
    3. Hi ALL, We have previously discussed the possibility of dna genealogy, referring to, and posting articles suggesting a future capability for, dna testing to determine family connections. Well, it can now be argued that the future has arrived. Ancestry.com has now put together a dna home testing kit, at a cost of about $200, for which a person can apparently be tested (by a cotton swab in the mouth) and by which your dna ‘fingerprint’ will be reported to you, and perhaps a bit more, as you can see by the short blurb below: “you will also be informed of exact matches or near matches with other samples in the database and have access to future database matches and web features for the next 12 months.“ While it isn’t totally clear, I gather that dna results, in addition to being reported to you, will also be used to compare to others. If anyone is planning to take advantage of this service, please contact me so we can plan to report (anonymously if you wish - I will tell no one w/o approval from you), on the information gathered, benefits, problems, potential, etc. Specific dna testing for Virginia Dare & Pocahontas While this is addressed to all my hosted Lists, and to others to which I belong, I’m sure it is no secret to many of you that I host Dare-L and Pocahontas-L. One of the possible theories that has been advanced over the past 400+ years is that this country’s first anglo citizen Virginia Dare, daughter of Ananias Dare md Eleanor White, d/o Expedition leader John White, could possibly been taken and raised by a NA (Native American) tribe, and, under unusual but possible circumstances, have been the mother of Pocahontas. It is relatively clear that we have a number of Dares w/quite early ancestors that belong to our Dare-L List, and also many Poca-L members that believe they are related to the known descendants of Poca, with strong supporting evidence, as can be viewed in the Archives of our Lists, where you can OneClick join and browse & search the Archives: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/d/dare.html http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/POCAHONTAS.html While it would be somewhat preferable to have a sample of the actual dna of Pocahontas for testing, it is almost as, perhaps even equally as, effective to have the samples of known descendants of her descendants. At the level of today’s science, as I understand it, if samples of dna, as could apparently be tested by a kit such as this one, were taken from true descendants of Va Dare & of Poca, it would be 99+% proof whether Va was (or was not) Poca’s mother (or possibly otherwise related, or not related, depending on the results). It is known that Poca was buried in GravesEnd church in the London area, although there is also evidence that her and others graves were moved to allow expansion of the church. At one point, it was reported that Wayne Newton was negotiating/ discussing w/UK governmental officials for recovery to the US of one of its initial heroes/heroines, although I have heard nothing new about this - if anyone has, please advise. There is a potential coalescing event, the Jamestown 400th anniversary, set for big time celebration in 2007. Any good news from our efforts could be of interest to attendees at this event, which itself could also be beneficial to efforts to repatriate Poca. Let us know what you think, and please let me know (private unless you say otherwise) if you are thinking about such testing, and particularly if you have undergone such testing). My grandmother, Dora Alice Ratliff Kelly was a sister of Florence Electra Ratliff who married Elijah David Moren. They married in Barry, Navarro County, Texas but do not have date they married. Florence is daughter of William Ezekial Ratliff and Alice R. (don't know her maiden name.) You say Elijah and Florence moved to Miles, Texas, which may be correct since William Ezekial Ratliff, her father, moved to Miles and I picked them up in the Miles, Runnels County, Texas 1910 and 1920 Censuses. I need to look at the 1910 and 1920 censuses to see if Elijah and Florence are in Miles, Texas at that time. They eventually ended up in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas where I knew them from. However, I found Elijah and Florence living in Coleman County, Texas in the 1900 Coleman County Census taken on 16th June 1900. The 1900 Census indicates Florence and Elijah had been married 4 years and had two children at that time, Talmage and Anna. (I know this Anna married a Williams). So, I am not sure they moved to Miles unless it was after 1900 Census was taken. They have several more children, and I had a list of them at one time, but have misplaced the list. I am working on the "Ratliff" genealogy, and am going to have to check the 1910 and 1920 Texas Censuses to find out the names of the rest of Elijah and Florence's children. Would you by chance have them? June

    3. Hello Ratliff List, (and others interested in places named after your ancestors) Below is my inquiry of recent in case someone can assist - but this message is about something else - locating the 75 various US locations named after the 'Ratliffs', or something else w/the same name. To see for yourself, Click On the Link below (the Govt USGS gnis server), then enter Ratliff in [only] the 'Feature Name' block, then be very patient and wait, what seems like 2-3 mins but is shorter. In about 30-40 secs, about 75 Ratliff [or Ratcliff, Dare, Witherington, etc] place names will be displayed, along exact GPS location, and many other tools, including the Terra Server aerial photos, which can be zoomed in. You'll begin to contemplate whether the place was named for your ancestor, or vice-versa. Good luck!
