Thought that this article published in the Wichita Daily Times on September 7, 1916 might be of some interest to Ratliff researchers. ABANDONED BABY IS FOUND AT VERNONVernon, Tex., Sept. 7. - An abandoned baby boy was found crying about 1 o'clock Tuesday morning on the iron base of the door into a sample-room of Hotel Vernon, by Chas. Ratliff and others. Mr. Ratliff said after he met the night train he went to Hotel Vernon and hearing a baby crying, remarked that he didn't see how people could sleep as a baby was crying lustily. The night clerk said no one with a baby was stopping there, an investigation disclosed a baby on the outside of the hotel. The little fellow's head was resting on a pillow, which was marked "A. C. L."A cheap grip filled with ordinary clothing was sitting beside the baby. The grip was marked on several times with the figures "23".Mr. Ratliff took the foundling home with him and he and his wife will give it a home and adopt it. The child is about ! a week old and has black hair. How the little fellow got there is a mystery. A woman coming in on the night Denver train might have left it there or some one might have drove up in an automobile and deposited the child on the door step. An investigation of the affair is being made. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo!

I am working the FOOSE line from Jasper, Hamilton Co.,FL< Lee, Co.,GA. I'm wondering if you could give me a guess as to time frame on your Sarah FOOSE? My husbands g/grandmother was Eliza (FOOSE) MUSSELWHITE b.ca 1850 Hamilton Co.,FL. She, a sister Mary Jane, and a brother Moses FOOSE, all mar. MUSSELWHITES in Hamilton Co. ca. 1870's. Civil War Pension Records say Moses was born Lee Co.,GA but nothing on his/their parents. There were not many FOOSES in thar area so if we are in the same time period we are probable looking at a sister or cousin. I have some records forward but nothing befor 1842. Please let me hear from you. Lynda
Does anyone know of a marriage between William Henry Ratliff and Sallie Light McClain about 1910 possibly in Llano Co., TX? Thanks, Carlton Edwards
Ballard Hezekiah Ratliff (he was called Hez) and his son Walter were both coal miners. I sorta remember a mine caved in on Ballard and they thought he broke his back, but these Ratliffs were very strong and he recovered alright. They worked and lived on the Goodwill Coal Camp. That is where my mother was born.
Hi Susie, Glad to hear from you. I understand about the being busy. It seems that between my house my husband and my 13 year old daughter I can't finds a minute to myself. This history of our family is what I do for myself and sometimes I have to put it on hold. So believe me I know. I will be glad to get it whenever you get time to send it on. As for the recipes, anything would be fine. My Ratliff's well not well off either so I know what you are talking about. My dad used to say if it wasn't for beans and cornbread and biscuits and gravy they probably would have starved. Maybe your mom has a story or two she could send to include. If she has time. Hope to hear from you soon. Can't remember if I have asked you but did your Ballard or any of his sons work in the mines. If so can you let me know. Thanks Take care Linda
Hello, I did print out my family line for you. I want you to know that I truly will send it. I had to go over it and take out the relatives that are still alive. I have been busy busy busy. I have been thinking about your cook book. I know alot of things we used to like, but want to send something good. I'm going to ask my mom for something also. My Ratliffs were not really well off and they ate mostly simple things like cornbread and beans. I don't want to send those kind of recipes. I'll find something! Susie

Linda, It has been suggested that my Ratliff's descend from Robert and Mary, but I have never been able to prove the connection. My line, as far back as I can definitely prove, is from John S. Ratliff, born October 1, 1806, in Lincoln County, GA. He married Grace Durham and they moved to Lee County, MS. John is largely responsible for the town of Verona, MS, where it is recorded that he donated the land for the town hall, town cemetery (where he and Grace are buried), and the two largest churches there. He also loaned his slaves to the government to help build the railroad through there. If any of this sounds at all familiar to you, I would be happy to contribute. Linda Pearson

Hello Linda: Can you tell me a little something on your John and Agnus? such as their children and birthdates and where John was from and where the children were born. I have been butting walls for a long time on my Ratliffs. You have a good idea here. I liked my mom's fried chicken but then I like most of mom's cooking. I am not a cook but I am a good eater.
