My dad tells me that our William b. 1830 was probably a mule skinner and a drover. There was some kind if a tiff between him and a brother which caused them to split up. One wanted to go to California driving trains or cattle (was it for gold, dad) and the other wanted to stay. They apparently split up and went their separate ways, or so the tales would like you to think. Dad, would you like to chime in? You are more aware of the story side and the family tales than I would be. You still remember them from your Grandma's knee and hearth side chats.

Does anyone on this list happen to have any information on a RATCLIFF family who lived in ORANGEBURG or BARNWELL DISTRICT, SC who had a daughter named LYDIA who married WILLIAM WALKER in 1799?? They are my gggrandparents on my mother's side and I am hopelessly lost. I have seen references to a SAMUEL RATCLIFF who lived in BARNWELL DISTRICT when the 1790 census was taken. He had no sons and only two females living in his household. I think one of these females may possibly be my LYDIA . Of course, he could have been her grandfather.
