I'm trying to locate a photo of Richard Ratliff, born in TX 1830, died 1904. I know there exists a photo of him in Confederate uniform. Any leads would be appreciated. Jim Dannheim [email protected]
Moses O. (possibly Oliver) Ratliff is believed to have been born in OH, 30 Jan. 1831 (Athens CO?). He married Sarah Golliver in Van Wert CO, OH in 1845. From this marriage came 5 children (Sarah, John, Rosanna, Sylvester and Josephine). Sarah Golliver Ratliff died prior to 1860 and Moses remarries to Mary Ann Huffman Harris in April of 1860 in Putnam CO, OH. Mary had 7 children from her previous marriage to John Harris (William, Marchus, Mary, George, Shelby, Lavina and Daniel) and 3 children from her marriage to Moses (Moses Oliver, Minerva and Granville). Moses is as far back as I can trace my Ratliff line. I would appreciate any information on his ancestors. Moses apparently moved around quite a bit. Was reported to have been in Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and is buried in OH. Is said to have had a brother in Illinois. I am also interested in determining the fate of Moses' daughter Josephine. As family legend has it she was given to relatives in Marshall CO, IN when she was six weeks old and never heard from again. Thanks for your help! Since I stumbled on to some leads regarding the Ratliff lines from TN to TX, I have been reading endlessly and using the Internet a lot more than usual. Two people have listed William Ratcliff b. 1830 as the son of Elijah Ratcliff. They say William was married to Elizabeth Lemon. One says Elijah's father was Reuben and one says it was Jesse. Does anyone have any documentation on a William b. 1830 son of Elijah? Or any other ideas? Our William was born (according to Collin Co. TX 1960 census) 1830 in TN and married to Lizzy b. 1837 in TN. There was a William Ratcliff married to an Elizabeth Shirley about 1860 in Collin Co. I believe this was our William; however, it might have been a second or third marriage. William enlisted in the Fitzhugh Mounted Cavalry which became a Confederate unit and he served with Page Roark, who we believe is a relative. William was killed in Jun 1863 at Milliken Bend, LA in a skirmish with the Union. He left two sons that we know of: John George and Samuel Page. They were orphaned as "Lizzy" disappeared by the next census in 1870. We are looking to see if the Shirley marriage is tied to the Belle Starr (Myra Shirley) family. They were in the same area at the same time. Anyone have any documentation which might support a solid lead? I have the descendents of the two Ratcliff boys families. I also know that the family of Joseph Ratcliff is represented in the Cook Co. TX area. John Washington Ratliff (married to Josephine Vernon) is the son of John Noah Ratliff married to Abigail Haggard. Our family had a photo of him, his wife and children, so there must have been a kinship on that branch.
I have been led to believe that part of my early family (by the name of Ratcliff/Ratliff/Radcliff, etc.) lived at one time on "the south branch of the Potomac". I would like to find out where on the south branch, but I haven't seen much on the early settlement areas. Could you shed some light on it? I think that William and John Radcliff, who were hunters for the Pringle brothers, et al, around the 1760's in the Hacker's Creek area, had come from the south branch... somewhere! Any help with names of early settlements and their locations would be greatly appreciated. Or info on where to find info! -- Regards, Michael A. Radcliff [email protected]
Any Ratcliff/Ratliff researchers with connections to the Ratcliff's of either Carter & Greenup Counties, Kentucky who moved west to Weston Co.,WY or Montana, please be sure and check out my web site at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/2994 You may click on "View Our Children's Ancestry" and then click on "Surnames" to view the Ratcliffs/Ratliffs I have. Please take a moment to sign my guest book and let me know if you have any links to any of my surnames. My friend, Esther Blair-Radcliffe also is linked to my page and she has great information on the Hyde-Beaufort Co., NC Ratcliff/Radcliff(e) families. Best regards, Pat Ratcliff-Milanese
Am very interested to learn where the settlement(s) were on the south branch of the Potomac in the mid 1700's. William and John Radcliff, who went with the Pringle brothers, et al, to the Hacker's Creek, W.Va. area as hunters in the 1760's, supposedly left from a settlement on the South Branch. Does anybody know where this might have been, or have any information on the these two Radcliff brothers? Parents, etc? -- Regards, Michael A. Radcliff [email protected]

Hi Jane Think of your work often. Seems that lately several people on the net advise folks of your Newsletter. I have joined many lists and send and receive lots of mail. Some with "close to home" help; some rather remote. The list operators are generally quite emphatic as they advise people not to send "attachments" except to individuals, then only with their prior approval. I send quite a few following that instruction. Instead of attaching, I have become quite adept (except for my typing errors) in highliting a selected file, clicking copy and then adding it to the place on my outgoing email message where it belongs by clicking Paste. You are doing a fabulous job and it is a great service, sorely needed. Regards Jim PS Punch up the [email protected] and see what you get. S'pose you know about them, already, though.

In a previous mailing I explained that Canon Whitely made a 9 page list of Almondbury RADCLIFFE's IN 1886 Entries were made by Whitely in chonological order. Under dato of 1798 he made the following copy: "Entry made in Register as follows: 'It appears by a Certificate under ye hand of Charles Pinkney, Governor and Commander in Chief of ye State of South Carolina, and under ye great seal of ye said State, in the City of Charleston within ye said State, bearing date ye 30th day of November 1789, that Thomas Radcliffe of Charleston aforesaid, Esquire, was duly married to Lucretia Hust, daughter of Harman Hust of Charleston, aforesaid, ye 4th day of December 1777 by Peter Levrier, Rector, in the presence of John Farquharson, of Charleston aforesaid, physician, who has testified ye same, upon oath according to ye custom of ye said State. Which Certificate so under seal as aforesaid is lodged with ye Register of ye Parish Church of Almondbury' Canon Whitely added the following: There is no signature to this entry, nor have I met with any certificate amongst the Registers" Jim Radcliffe can not place this man Thomas among his Radcliffe ancestors of the Almondbury Parish. No Thomas Radcliffe appears on 1988 edition IGI, Yorks Baptisms from 1713 until 1799. I would like to identify this Thomas Radcliffe and suspect that some people in or from Charleston, So. Carolina or somewhere? may know who he was. Any one recognize him? Cheers Jim Radcliffe Ruidoso, New Mexico
Among the many treasured "family records" which I possess, is a list prepared in 1886 by Canon Whitely for Sir David Radcliffe, mayor of Liverpool, born 8 Jan 1834 at Netherton (Huddersfield),son of Amos Radcliffe/Olive Jepson. David employed Canon Whitley to search the records of Almondbury Parish and to identify his ancestors. That list is 9 hand written pages in length and continues to help me identify my family. Another treasured, valuable record, is an article in the Huddersfield Examiner, Saturday, May 15, 1886, which tells about Sir David and his parents and grandparents, Charles Radcliffe/Elizabeth Mallinson, and his six brothers and sisters. During the 1850's four of these, brothers Charles, Amos & Thomas and sister Hannah Clissold went to Australia; Brother Benjamin and sister Fanny Beaumont went to Wisconsin and four stayed, including David and brother John of Netherton and sisters Elizabeth Peace and Mary Hawkyard of the Huddersfield area. Each person mentioned above and each of their spouses and many of their ancestors and many, many of their decendants, are the subjects of 12 growing "books" which may be reprinted from their 1996 version if we ever catch up with the new information which John Radcliffe of Meltham, Hudd, Yorks., keeps finding - I do a little, too. Now you folks are really helping as well. -----Many of these folks were involved in Liverpool. most of them for only about 5-8 years, during the 1850's, except for Sir David who generated his own family of note. David's oldest son, Sir Frederick Morton Radcliffe, of Liverool Anglican Cathedral and newspaper note, was most recognized of that family which is scattered over 3, or more, continents as well. This will be forwarded to LANCSGEN-L. Best Wishes to all. Special thanks to "Coach Tana" who has been of great generous help to me. Jim

Thanks Edwin! Which side of the Atlantic are you on? I know where Loughborough, Leics., is but where is Leeds, LOUGHBOROUGH? As to thoughts: I pretend that I am not interested in seeking to connect my branch of RADCLIFFES with the place called Radcliffe or apparently Red Cliff in the time of William the Conqueror. The truth of the matter is that I am not capable of doing that sort of thing. It does seem that there was probably a root to a name that has become spelled in various ways as Radcliffe, Ratcliffe, Ratliff and so on. I have many relatives in UK, USA and Australia, many of these are friends and generally tend to be ancient as am I at age almost 77. Some would be offended to hear that Radcliffe is not the correct spelling for a pure line. If I ever was - and I perhaps was - humility has been forced upon me because I have records of known ancestors whose name have been spelled RaTcliffe. Another spelling that LDS has copied is RadIcliffe. These for persons definitely of my family. In some cases I assume that the person writing the name on a Baptismal (or marriage) record was either misinformed or not overly scholarly or careless. Another factor which I think is becoming a greater problem as time goes on is the tendency of persons and institutions to _abbreviate_ and in the process lose essentially important information. A variation of this type of thing involves what appears to be a process of copying good records. An example which I don't use to criticize but only to illustrate is the marriage record of my gt gt grandfather, Amos Radcliffe who married Olive Jepson at Almondbury Parish Church in 1813. That record on which the persons are named and each sign and witnesses are named and the Priest signs is very standard in English use. A good copy is often extremely informative and therefore valuable. For many years I have had a copy which I obained At Huddersfield, Yorkshire on which it seems perfectly clear that the persons marrying signed their own names and with other evidence that the document is original. A copy obtained from LDS is obviously all in the handwriting of one person, is not actually signed by Amos Radcliffe and omits the name of one witness. What difference does all of this make or imply? I think none to the "statistician" type researcher; To me who only on that original document learned with certainty that Amos Radcliffe in 1813 was literate and signed his own name is it perhaps significant. He produced a passel of educated achievers and it appears that his mother did too. Enough of this. I dont have time to be negative and critical. One of the Children Of Amos Radcliffe/Olive Jepson, John, was recorded as RaDcliffe at Baptism but somehow on his marriage record was referred to as RaTcliffe. For the rest of his life his records, which are voluminous in Netherton and South Crosland, Huddersfield, Yorks., involve both spellings. We KNOW that the RaTcliffe spelling was an accident for reasons that we can't explain. Until very recently we dismissed the importance of the error because we did not realize that his only daughter, who married William Boys in 1877, had been known as Clara Ann RATLIFF on BOYS family records. BOYS family folks have appreciated learning that Clara Anna Radcliffe was the correct name of their family member. When more efficient, family genealogist folks hear that I don't use the Gedcom systems they sometimes give up on me. After spending years adding data to group sheets in the complete original form used by the person who Baptized or Married or Buried folks I just don't have time to copy the "sterile" data to the standard systems. Everyone is welcome to use my record and copy to the gedcom system at any time. Almost every entry is prima facia supported since the entries are copies of original documents. For example: The Baptismal record of Amos Radcliffe on my group sheetis a complete transcription: "AMOS, SON OF CHARLES RADCLIFFE AND ELIZA HIS WIFE OF NETHERTHONG IN THE COUNTY OF YORK & PARISH OF ALMONDBURY, BORN ON THE 16th DAY OF DEC 1788, WAS BAPTIZED BY ME, ROBERT GALLAND, (PROTESTANT DISSENTING MINISTER)25 JAN 1789. This record is that of Lane Chapel at Holmfirth. That place has often been recorded as Holmfirth Lane Chapel which description has led some of us to look for the chapel on Holmfirth lane which is a street near Honley. By the way until I found that original document i believed that Amos was born in 1785 because a reputable family member had said so. That family member was Sir Frederick Morton Radcliffe who was a man of great accomplishment and note and whose word in every matter was considered to be beyond question. Sir Fred was a prime mover and worker in the building of the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral among other things. It may be obvious to you that some of my English relatives have good reason to accept me as a "true Radcliffe" because I, like the rest of them "ramble on and on". Cheers and thanks and tell me more of your heritage and other parts as well Jim Radcliffe 108 Monica's Ct, Ruidoso, New Mexico 88355 Tel 505 257 4987; Fax 505 257 1400 - if you like attachments tell me your software system or something.
