Regarding the Bates and the Jordans... Does this group include Sarah Jordan Bates? Isn't this the line so well-documented by Larry Ratliff in his recently published book. Larry lives in St. Albans, WV and has worked on this for some time. It is not my line but if I am wrong about this please let me know. Thanks, Gary Radcliffe
My one Radcliff is Nancy Jane Radcliff who married Marquis DeLafayette Maxedon in 1857, had a daughter Mary and was widowed by 1859. Married William Noblitt, 1861, had 4 more children, including David, Louisa, I don't remember the other names off hand. They lived in Indiana at that time, Orange County or Washington County. If you have any information, please write me. Thank you, Karon
My third Ratcliff line connects with Bates and Jordans in Isle of Wight, where either five or seven Jordan and Ratcliff brothers and sisters intermarried, so there are multiple cousin relationships among their descendants. It has been a long time since I looked at this line, since it is so distant and poorly documented. Dear Den & Mari and all, I just sent my first message on this list. My second Ratcliffe line is closely associated with the first; I don't have the information that connects them, other than that the William Ratcliff previously named is a grandson of Anne Ratcliffe. Anne, birth date unknown, married William Harrison. He was born circa 1675 in York County, Virginia; died 1727. William and Anne had a son, William Harrison, born 1705 York County, Virginia; died 1771; married Margaret Maupin. Their daughter is the Elizabeth Harrison who married the William Ratcliff I named in the first Quaker line on 14 January 1764 in Goochland, Virginia. Dear Den & Mari & all, I've been a lurker, so this is my first communication to the list. My earliest line were Quakers, and they retained that affiliation for many generations and years. Earliest identified in this line is William Ratcliff, born 19 May 1739 in York County, Virginia; died 16 November 1784; married Elizabeth Harrison 10 January 1764 in Goochland, Virginia. Son of William and Elizabeth was William Ratcliff, born 14 January 1864; married Mary Bates 7 November 1792, York County, Virginia. Question dates: was he really born on the day his parents were married? In different counties? Son of William and Mary was William Fleming Ratcliff, born 2 June 1803 in Virginia; died 25 February 1890 in Iowa; married Sarah Elizabeth Cadwallader 28 April 1830 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Their daughter, Hannah Jane Ratcliff, married Ephron Osborne Quaintance and moved to New Sharon, Iowa, and are one set of my great grandparents. Hello Everyone! We need to get more participating and posting to the list. I'd like to propose a new thread. I'd like for each to post their earliest Ratliff ancestor, and the direction of migration. In other words, if your ancestor landed in say, Boston, then name that ancestor, including dates, etc., and the migratory direction they took if any, across country to the place they stayed and settled. Now, keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean just the USA. If you have roots outside the USA that have been traced, and you can use that as the starting point, by all means do! In the subject line, please put the name of your ancestor as follows: RATLIFF, {first name} IN>IA>KS Please be sure to include the dates you have for the ancestor in the message body. I don't have much to offer in this, but will give what I have. My husband's GGGrandfather, Mark MODLIN, married Mary RATLIFF..... I have no information on her place of birth. They were married in Henry Co., IN. Their first two children were born in Henry Co., and then apparently they moved at some point to Blackford Co., where the remaining children were born. I don't have much to offer with our RATLIFF family. Here is a short outline tree of our Mary J RATLIFF. The middle name Jelillie was given to us by my late father in law and one of his brothers. They both "thought" that was her middle name. They also said that they thought that her family had been near Atlanta and come to AL from there, but they weren't sure. I, personally, think that she and her family were part of the Birmingham AL RATLIFF family. A cousin's grandmother told her that this was true, but all we have to go on is heresay. Here it is. The names James A and George Ratliff came from the marriage bond for Mary and John M CANANT. The names of other siblings of Mary came from an aunt: Judy Canant Descendants of Benjamin? I am looking for any information concerning a William Ratcliff (Ratliff/Radcliff, etc.), who, with wife unknown, had: Nathan, b abt 1762 in Virginia Richard, b abt 1764 in Virginia (my ggg grandfather) James, b abt 1769 in Botetourt Co., Virginia Silas, b March 1777 in Botetourt Co., Virginia Stephen, b 1780 in Botetourt Co., Virginia Martha (Peggy), b abt 1781 in Botetourt Co., Virginia This is an often researched family, but I have seen nothing much in print about William and earlier, except for an obscure reference to a possibility that his parents may have been named Robert Ratcliff and Mary Touchstone. William was born between 1730 and 1740 in Virginia, married about 1760 (possibly to a girl named Susanna ______ ) and he died between 1821 and 1825 in Pike County, Ky. Very vague family tradition says that this Ratcliff branch came from the South Branch of the Potomac, the "Buchannon River settlements" (whatever they were), down the Little Kanawha, and from there into Floyd (later Pike) County, Ky. and through present Wayne County, W.Va., into Lawrence County, Ohio. I would be particularly interested in any information that can be provided about the Ratcliffs that were from the South Branch (Moorefield?) area. Could this William possibly be the same William that was the brother of John, both of whom moved from the South Branch settlements to become hunters for the Pringle brothers group in the Hacker's Creek area? My William would have been roughly the right age, and if he indeed came from the South Branch, he would have been in the right area, as well. If anyone has any information on any William Ratcliff (or Ratliff, Radcliff, etc.) at all, in any part of the Virginias in the mid 1700's, please let me hear from you. (I would also be especially interested in any instances of early William Ratcliff marriages in Virginia, or possibly even Maryland!) Thanks. -- God Bless You, Michael A. Looking for information on my wife's RATCLIFFE family. The info we have is: George RATCLIFFE m Elizabeth WATSON 1847 in Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland. He, so the family has said, was born in England. They had a son George b 1850 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland m Dorithea DUNN and they had quite a few children, one being my father-in-law, James. He emigrated to Canada and m1? and they had a son George and possibly others. He m2 Kaja JENSEN. If anyone has any knowledge of any of these families, OR if anyone can advise places to do research please advise.
Hey Mike! I think we might be of the same Ratliff line. My Ratliff line is also in Lincoln co., GA and Wilkes co., Ga at the same time. I think( not sure yet will have to check my files ) your Samuel might be a brother to my William Ratliff of Lincoln co. Ga. Give me a few days to check. I don't want to raise your hopes too much but it looks good. Ruth

When you click on the "reply to" instead of going to the individual, it will go to the list. If you want to just send the message to the person, and not to the list, you will need to change the address in the "to" field. Does that explain it OK?......
