    2. Our line also came through Ala. on the way to miss. Hezekiah and Samuel Ratliff left Lincoln Co... Ga. in the 1820's.They were in Ala. around 1836 because Jane Ratliff daughter of James and Mary Ratliff was born there. They moved to Miss. in 1837 were Richard was born in 1837. We have no record of Hezekiah or Samuel's parents. Any help would be appreciated-mike ratliff

    2. I am one of the AL Ratliff folks. Our Mary Jelillie RATLIFF was recorded in her marriage record (to John Melton CANANT) in Cullman Co as "RACKLIFF". However, her marriage bond was signed by George RATLIFF and James A RATLIFF. They also witnessed her marriage certificate. Obviously her name was RATLIFF. Many times, whoever recorded the marriage documents spelled the name incorrectly. We are also searching for Mary's parents. There is no indication if one of the George's or James was a father. She also had brothers by those names. We have the list of siblings but no one ever wrote down her parent's names. We believe that she is one of the RATLIFFs who populated central AL (particularly Birmingham area and Cullman area) but we have no proof. I do not have a Sarah Frances Lilly Mae. Hope you find your Ratliffs. I am beginning to think ours are from outer space!! 3. Hi folks, As an interested bystander, I wish to post for my late wife who was a Ratliff. As near as I can make it out her oldest known ancestor was Samuel Ratliff b.1788 GA wife unknown on Choctaw Co. MS 1850 census. 1 known son James Richard Ratliff b. 1810 GA died & bur.Montgomery Co.MS 1st wife Mary (?) Children Sarah A. b. 1835, Jane b.1836, Richard b. Aug 1835, m. Susan I. Jessie Lowe William Madison, b. 2 Dec 1874, died young This is all I know about her Ratliffs. She died looking for her ancestors and I guess she found them after all. I also have a probable Ratliff in my line. My ggg-grandfather Charles Holt b. 1762 Prince William Co. VA, d. 1847 Blount Co. AL, married a Martha (?) in Franklin Co. NC 1781. Now I understand that some folks think that her maiden name was Ratliff or Rackley. They moved to Granville Co.NC, Spartenburg Co. SC, Franklin Co. GA, Dickson Co. TN, Hickman Co. TN, Rutherford Co. TN, St Clair Co. AL to finally Blount Co. AL where a John Ratliff referred to them as his aunt and uncle in a Rev War pension application. Any connection to either of these would be appreciated. 2. How nice to have email about the surname RATLIFF. My John Ratliff of York co., VA was b. 1706 to Richard & Elizabeth Ratliff in York co.,Va ( Va church records) I'm thinking this Richard is the son of the Richard Ratliff of ISle of Wight. Isle of Wight co & York co., Va are close to one another. I think this John Ratliff is the one that was put out by the Quakers for attending his sisters wedding (Mary Ratliff to Wm? Ouland) because the wedding was not in "proper order". John had a brother, Wm b. 1701 ( in Va records) John married Mary ? they had a son Robert Ratliff. ( John's will) . Robert Ratliff married Nancy ? and moved to Lincoln co., GA and died there in 1803. His widow later married France Powell. Robert's will named his children. I don't have the list here in front me so I will give my line. Robert Ratliff's oldest son was Wm Ratliff b ca 1750, m. 1771 to Diane "Hannah" Moon ( Colonial Marriages of Ga) and d. @1819 in Ala (Ala Records) This Ratliff line stays in Ala until 1859 and then they move to Tex. If you think this is your line please email me. Ruth

    3. Ratliff researchers, Supplementing my earlier post on a possible THOMPSON-RATLIFF family link, I am pasting below a URL that gives information on William RATLIFF. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This site is the Skaggs rootsweb list archives. I typed Moses AND Thompson which resulted in lots of posts about a suit to settle Moses Thompson's estate. A deposition from William RATLIFF is in the records of the suit. John Thompson and Mary Unknown's daus., Lucy and Mary, married Charles and Henry Skaggs. Moses is either the son or grandson of Henry and Mary. The names and relationships of folk involved in the suit link the Thompson-Skaggs line to several other families in frontier Montgomery Co., Va., and Green Co., Ky. areas. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse

    1. [RATLIFF-L] RATLIFF IN VIRGINIA
    2. Jemima Gee Morse
    3. Ratliff researchers, Archibald THOMPSON, b. 1736, m. Mary ELSWICK, b. 1742, had a son named Ratliff. As a couple of their other sons -- Rodden and Elswick -- were given surnames as Christian names, I believe Ratliff was named for a Ratliff family that was in the same area of Pittsylvania-Montgomery Co., Va., as Archibald and company in the mid-1700s-1800. In a Diary that Archibald kept, the name Nathan RATLIFF is recorded a couple of times in trade notes -- one entry is around 1790. Ratliff Thompson, b. 1767, m. Catty (Catherine) COMPTON in 1797 in Green Co., Ky. Surnames in the Diary include ELSWICK, SKAGGS, RATLIFF, WOOD, VANCIL, PENNINGTON, CODIE, AKERS, BLACKBURN, LORTON, DESPAIN and others. Some Thompson researchers think that Lidia Unknown (Mary's mother) who m. first, John Elswick, second, Jacob Lorton, may have been a Ratliff (Ratcliff), but no proof has been found. Archibald says he was born in Ireland, and a Saunders-Akers researcher found a record that may be for John, Archibald's father, in a French and Indian War list published in a William and Mary College quarterly. We're still looking for him. Archibald was in the French and Indian War, and at the Virginia Library Electronic Card site, his and many allied family names are listed as recipients of land grants for service not only in the F&I War but also the Revolution. I'll be glad to send a draft transcript of the Diary to anyone who is interested. The Diary is owned by someone (unknown to me) in my family line and a copy is in the Monroe Co., Ky., library. The copy I got was made from the library copy and the page order is wrong; many entries are indecipherable, but most family records can be read. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse

William left a will that named his children in 1826 at Wood County, (W)VA where he died. William's father was Daniel Stephen Radcliff b. c1714 in England, lived in Hampshire County (W)VA and d. 1784 in now Lewis County, WV. Thanks for giving me the chance to clear that up. Sincerely, Gary Radcliffe Incidentally, that is my earliest known ancestor, the immigrant. Gary
