    3. Hi Kelly, I have no knowledge where she was born, they lived in southern Indiana. Other relatives of mine living in that area moved there from Kentucky, but I don't know if she did. I will consider seeing information on the oldest funeral home. I don't know if she was involved with a funeral home, or if the family prepared her for burial. Thanks for that thought. 1. [RATLIFF-L] cornelius ratliff
    2. CORNELIUS RATLIFF, SEN, was born in Bucks Co., Pa., about the year 1755. He was a son of Joseph Ratliff, who came over from England with William Penn, and was present at the making of the famed treaty with the Indians under the great elm. He removed, when young, with his father to North Carolina. He there married widow Elizabeth Charles, and in November, 1810, came to Whitewater, and settled a mile north of Richmond, on the farm on which his son Cornelius now resides, and which he had purchased in 1808. He was a member of the society of Friends. He had eight children, all born in North Carolina. All lived to the age of majority, and were married as follows: Mary, in N. C., to Robert, son of John Smith; both deceased. Elizabeth, to Nathan Overman, who settled near Centerville. Gulielma, to Andrew Hoover, and resides in Clinton Co. Joseph, to Mary Shugart, of New Garden, and died near Marion, Grant Co. Sarah, to John Shugart, of New Garden. Millicent, first, to Benj. Albertson; second, to Thomas Newman; both deceased. Cornelius, to Mary Kinley. Abigail, to Joshua Albertson, and died in Clay township, where he still resides. CORNELIUS RATLIFF, son of the above-named, was born in North Carolina, Dec. 25, 1798, and came to this county with his father in 1810. He still resides on the farm on which he settled with his father, having never left the old homestead. He was married to Mary Kinley, who was born March 15, 1802. They had ten children, of whom six are living and married: Margaret, to Simon Wood, and resides at Greensboro, Henry Co. Joseph C., to Mary Crawford, and lives in Center township. Elizabeth, to Thompson Harris, and resides in Center. Sarah, to Timothy Thistlethwaite, and lives in Richmond. William P., to Jane Snyder, and resided in Richmond; was a merchant, and died in April, 1871. 3. Karon, I do wish I could help you. It is so frustrating at times. Where was your Nancy J. Radcliff born, do you know? These are some of my family migratory directions, maybe, just maybe you may snoop around them and accidentally find something. 1750 Virginia 1810 in Tennessee, Randolph County and on to Illinois. 1818 Washington County, Illinois 1820 Madison County, Illinois 1830 Crawford county, Arkansas at some point being in Van Buren Arkansas (and Big Creek -Fort Smith areas) abt 1850 From here most of my personal line went on into Texas, Florence, Williamson county. But some went to Luling, Caldwell county, Texas Milam County, Texas Smith County, Texas (ahh heck, just about the whole state of Texas is a good bet.) Tennessee, Indiana, (Neosha, Newton County Missouri), Alabama, and New Mexico. Can you find a place of her death as there may be funeral papers at the oldest funeral parlor in the area. That was how I managed to track one of my cousins who was born prior to the turn of this century. I tracked the pallbearers and came across some family. good luck, Kelly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. Thank you Kelly, my gg grandmother was Nancy J Radcliff, and I have not yet been able to connect her with a set of parents or brothers and sisters. She married Marquis DeLafayette Maxedon in Indiana in 1857. They had a daughter Mary in December 1858 and he died in 1859. She married a widower, William Noblitt in 1861, had four more children, 3 daughters and a son, David. The daughters were Martha, Josephine and Louisa. In 1900, Mary was married to Jacob Oscar Thomas, had 3 daughters, including my grandmother Retta, and lived in Otero County Colorado, near LaJunta. Her half brother, David Noblitt lived there in the same place, or next door, with his wife and family. I would dearly love to connect with someone who knows her Radcliff family. Karon Mazie The statement that they are all related, and the d indicated Scottish was interesting to me. Thank you for sharing. I will save that piece!

    2. Kelly KH Sullivan
    3. This letter (copies of ) has been passed on to family members and came to me this year. The cousin who sent it to me thought it would be a good addition to the Ratliff list, for informational purposes. I agree. The copy I possess was copied by Emma Jon Ratliff Chandler in its original composition and added notes, March 10, 1971 The Ratliff Family This letter from J.M. Ratliff of Arkansas to W.N. Ratliff of Centerville, Tennessee and which he sent to his brother, L.M. Ratliff of Texas dated June 4, 1909. Then sent to Bertha Fouts, Weston, Ohio, by Edith Ratliff Gunn, Amarillo, Texas, October 9, 1968 The Ratliff family are Scotch first, now Scotch-Irish, with a later admixture of North German (only one family have German blood), emigrated over 200 years ago to England, settled the town of Ratliff not far from London. The name in Scotland was Radcliff, in Ireland changed the spelling to give Irish accent, Ratcliff, dropping the d; In England to give the Anglo-Saxon sound dropped the c and it was Ratliff, for they were of old Presbyterian stock. A part came in the days of King James to America, in the "Discovery" in command of Capt. John Ratcliffe, and settled at Jamestown, Va. From here they separated and part went to Bat Cave, Va., some to Pike Court House, Kentucky, (on Big Sandy River, I believe). Our gr-gr-gr-grandfather had 12 sons -- from their temporary homes in Virginia part of these moved on foot across the mountains to Central Kentucky, after which they again changed the spelling of the name, and left off the final e, and it was Ratliff again. A part of the family are still in Virginia, and it is believed that descendants of one of the 12 still own Bat Cave. William is a family name, was William Ratliff who had 20, 000 acres of land there. Some are still in England, and some of those still retain the c in the name. Every Ratliff, Ratcliffe, Radcliff and Ratcliff are kin and came from the same stock. Now this final e was restored by a cousin of ours, a son of Reuben, in Kentucky, and a pedagogue. The change we regret for the spelling of the name in so many different ways has been changed too often without any necessity for it, causing confusion in tracing the line of Descent. (Arch, Mose, Reuben, William and John settled in what is now Taylor county., Kentucky, at Campbellville, Long before the war between the states). These brothers, some with grown children and grand children, began to scatter. One went to the Republic of Texas, whose descendants are here and there in Texas now. One went to Mississippi, one, William Jr., went to Tennessee, who married a Lady of German descent, of small stature. From this resulted a marriage between John and a distant relative of James. We believe from this union we have the Ratliff family in Hickman county, Tennessee. William, Newton, Mark, Shadrick (Shadd) and four sisters, Matilda, Lou, Rachel and Anna. The wife of John was one of the Old Louisiana family. Arch remained in Kentucky, years after the other brothers scattered. John M., Centerville, Tennessee (April 19, 1909) is a grandson of Arch. One of these brothers, Mose, died in Kentucky, two of his grandsons are preachers in the Church of Christ, and all cousins to W. W. Ratliff, Mark and their families, Joe and Jim, in Carlisle, Kentucky. Those in Mississippi took to the Law, and were noted politicians in the days of Populiam. A line of preachers are all the way along -- several of Wm. Jr., grandsons in Arkansas, are noted Methodist preachers, some of them went east later and are Episcopalian clergymen. Mark went from Hickman county, Tennessee to Texas with a large family, as the family from the earliest history are quite prolific, though not all Mark's boys took politics or law. W. W. Ratliff had no children, but has raised three orphans, who are called by the family name. He lives in Centreville, Tennessee. One John Ratliff, jr,. father of W. W., Mark and Shadd and the four sisters, was a son of five brothers, having drifted to Tennessee, while J.M. Ratliff is the son of Reuben. These were brother's sons and their families, cousins, or if you prefer, second cousins. Alex, another cousin down another line a Baptist preacher, died in Kentucky. Arch died in Indiana, John in Tennessee, William in Texas and Mose in Kentucky. --W. N. Ratliff Early families of Eastern Kentucky by Kozee contains information on a James Ratliff. Mrs. Gunn is from the line of John Ratliff b. 1822, Hickman county, Tennessee. d. while a confederate Soldier, m. Minerva, a cousin of some degree who was b. same county, 1824. (I am not clear about this last line concerning the Confederate soldier and Mrs. Gunn, but I typed it as I recieved it. Make of it what you will, or if you know of a correction, please inform me.) 3. Linda, Have you tried looking in Alabama via US GenWeb (I've had some REALLY great luck finding researchers that will look up stuff--including newspaper articles, cemeteries etc!). If you aren't aware of this site here is the address: "http://www.usgenweb.org/statelinkstable.html" Make sure you bookmark it, you'll probably use it often. The site breaks down into states and then counties--each run by individuals so you'll get different amounts of information in each county. Once county in MN I found marriage and cemetary records for family I had been spending months of inquiries elsewhere with no results! Good luck, Lauri my web page: "http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/3029/" [email protected] wrote: > > I thought I would try this again: > Hopefully you might have an answer for me. 3. Anyone know William Ratliff, son of John Ratliff. John Ratliff and family were listed in the Census of 1810 having moved from Virginia (via Tennessee) to Illinois, in Randolph County. William also appears in 1830 and 1832 with his father John, on the U.S. Census for Crawford County, Arkansas. They are also listed in Crawford County, Ark. on the Tax List for 1829. William is a brother to My Jobe. His other Known brothers were Thompson and James Ratliff. Does any one know if William married or had children, and if so where or any dates on him that may help me find his information on my own. Thanks, Kelly ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 3. Who was you John's parents? I have a John in my tree that may be a match, but I need a tad bit more to go on? I have several John Ratliff's in my tree that are not close to same birth date, but with enough Information, may tie in and be able to help. His parents would be the direction I would need to know if you have it..
