    3. Steve, I'm glad you found the photo. I didn't realize the URL wouldn't work after that session. She does look pregnant, and young. Another S H RANSOM I found is Samuel H RANSOM who married Eleanor GODDARD in 1839 in Castile NY. But that would make this woman about 41 or older, and the pictured "Mrs S H RANSOM" looks younger than that. Veering off task here, I also saw this note in 1845 patents: "Ornamental Stove-Samuel H. Ransom, Albany, N.Y. July 10." and this at Genesee Country Village & Museum http://www.gcv.org/companion/companion975.html "At the Tackle Shop is a box stove made by Samuel H. Ransom & Company of Albany. A pan or reservoir of water was placed over the boiling hole on the top of the stove to act as a humidifier. " back to task, George Washington RANSOM's work says only that his brother, Samuel Huston RANSOM was b 3 July 1834, and married "Miss Bettie KEAN. Had one son, Samuel H. He is married, has two children, but I do not remember his wife's name. They are living in Texas. Samuel [brother, I assume] was a man of great promise and had he lived to have passed the meridian of life he would have made his mark on the world." no pension records noted. I saw this message on Civil War genforum and Ransom @ familyhistory: Samuel H. Ransom Quartermaster CSA, Posted by: Marsha Belty mailto:mdbelty@webtv.net Date: November 25, 2000 "I have a photo of this soldiers head stone. If he belongs to anyone I would be glad to send it. No dates on stone." Marsha: where is the gravestone? [perhaps we can track down some records]. Samuel H RANSOM is listed as the AQM [assistant quartermaster?] for the First Tennessee Infantry (Maney's), Co.E, in May 1861, see http://www.1tenn.co.uk/officers.htm or the main page at http://www.1tenn.co.uk/ I didn't explore the CW history site much, but Steve is right about early federal takeover of Nashville area, according to the regimental history. H. Ransom Photo Mike, I received the Ransom-D Digest message re the photo of Mrs. S. H.Ransom, dated 30.5.62 (I'm assuming that's 30 May 1862). I attempted to view the photo at http://www.nara.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/29510/standard.txt, but that's an "illegal" entry point to their data base. I made a brief attempt at locating the photo by initiating my own search, but was unsuccessful. What key word will lead to the photo? I have some thoughts on the Mrs. Samuel Houston (Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" King) Ransom that the LDS patron submitted as a possibility. From the data I've received from others, Bettie and Sam had a male child, Samuel H., born on 10/25/1862, so if this photo were her, then she'd be about four months pregnant. Does she appear young enough and pregnant? Regarding the unlikelyhood of Matthew Brady photographing Southerners in 1862: I'd need to check Federal occupation dates of the various areas of Tennessee, but it is quite possible that Mrs. Samuel H. Ransom would have been in occupied territory. The Federals occupied Western Tennessee very early in the war. Steve Ransom
