Mike, Maybe this is not the picture of the wife (or mother) of Samuel Houston Ransom, but the further commentary on the page (link from the picture page) which discusses the entire BRADY collection says that he photographed prominent leaders during the Civil War from both the UNION and CONFEDERATE sides....he was a photographer and historian. The text also states that he photographed not only prominent figures of the time on both sides, but also the daily lives of ordinary soldiers ..."also of interest were photographs of Union and Confederate Naval Vessels, railroads, supply dumps and hospitals." All photos contain captions. Included are pictures of Petersburg VA, Shiloh, TN among others. The whole catalogue is on microfilm. Yours, Carole
