    1. Re: SAMUEL HOUSTON RANSOM & the BRADY PHOTO
    2. MIke, et al THANKS for the reference to this picture! What a find! Not sure your assumption about BRADY not taking photos of Confederates takes all the facts into consideration. After all he was a PHOTOGRAPHER, which means if he was there, he might have done it for historical reasons.... OR more likely, BRADY was also around for the War for Texas Independence, a very popular war with the famous first TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS....who went to TX to fight. SAMUEL HOUSTON RANSOM b 8 July 1834 RUTHERFORD Co, TN (Murfreesboro) married ELIZABETH (BETTIE) KING on 23 Nov. 1861 in Rutherford County. They apparently DID move to Texas and had at least one son (SAMUEL N. RANSOM) in TEXAS. Since the Civil War age Samuel Houston Ransom was named after SAM HOUSTON (also originally a Tennessean) Only speculating....... Carole PS I got the descent from George W. Ransoms personal chronology, so take it or leave it. SAMUEL HOUSTON RANSOM was the son of JOHN A. RANSOM (1792-1849)and ELIZABETH BOWMAN, a brother of GEORGE WASHINGTON RANSOM and a grandson of CAPT RICHARD RANSOM of the American Revolution. 3. Steve, I'm glad you found the photo. I didn't realize the URL wouldn't work after that session. She does look pregnant, and young. Another S H RANSOM I found is Samuel H RANSOM who married Eleanor GODDARD in 1839 in Castile NY. But that would make this woman about 41 or older, and the pictured "Mrs S H RANSOM" looks younger than that. Veering off task here, I also saw this note in 1845 patents: "Ornamental Stove-Samuel H. Ransom, Albany, N.Y. July 10." and this at Genesee Country Village & Museum http://www.gcv.org/companion/companion975.html "At the Tackle Shop is a box stove made by Samuel H. Ransom & Company of Albany. A pan or reservoir of water was placed over the boiling hole on the top of the stove to act as a humidifier. " back to task, George Washington RANSOM's work says only that his brother, Samuel Huston RANSOM was b 3 July 1834, and married "Miss Bettie KEAN. Had one son, Samuel H. He is married, has two children, but I do not remember his wife's name. They are living in Texas. Samuel [brother, I assume] was a man of great promise and had he lived to have passed the meridian of life he would have made his mark on the world." no pension records noted. I saw this message on Civil War genforum and Ransom @ familyhistory: Samuel H. Ransom Quartermaster CSA, Posted by: Marsha Belty mailto:mdbelty@webtv.net Date: November 25, 2000 "I have a photo of this soldiers head stone. If he belongs to anyone I would be glad to send it. No dates on stone." Marsha: where is the gravestone? [perhaps we can track down some records]. Samuel H RANSOM is listed as the AQM [assistant quartermaster?] for the First Tennessee Infantry (Maney's), Co.E, in May 1861, see http://www.1tenn.co.uk/officers.htm or the main page at http://www.1tenn.co.uk/ I didn't explore the CW history site much, but Steve is right about early federal takeover of Nashville area, according to the regimental history. H. Ransom Photo Mike, I received the Ransom-D Digest message re the photo of Mrs. S. H.Ransom, dated 30.5.62 (I'm assuming that's 30 May 1862). I attempted to view the photo at http://www.nara.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/29510/standard.txt, but that's an "illegal" entry point to their data base. I made a brief attempt at locating the photo by initiating my own search, but was unsuccessful. What key word will lead to the photo? I have some thoughts on the Mrs. Samuel Houston (Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" King) Ransom that the LDS patron submitted as a possibility. From the data I've received from others, Bettie and Sam had a male child, Samuel H., born on 10/25/1862, so if this photo were her, then she'd be about four months pregnant. Does she appear young enough and pregnant? Regarding the unlikelyhood of Matthew Brady photographing Southerners in 1862: I'd need to check Federal occupation dates of the various areas of Tennessee, but it is quite possible that Mrs. Samuel H. Ransom would have been in occupied territory. The Federals occupied Western Tennessee very early in the war. Steve Ransom

They settled in Kirksville MO after the Civil War and are buried there. A daughter Elizabeth May RANSOM married Isaac Newton MEEKS. I don't have any further info, although a Mormon recently submitted temple work for a same-name couple married in 1933 in Butler Co PA. [per Oscar FRICKE notes on HBR/Colchester/64] Lyman W RANSOM was editor of the Visalia Times-Delta and Marysville Herald. His death is reported in the CALL, 16 January 1894 p10 col 2. His stint as editor apparently ran from 14 April 1864 to 22 Feb 1865, as reported in the Visalia Times-Delta Anniversary edition, 26 May 1839, p4 of §3, filed at CSL at fc979.486 V822. There are letters to the editor in Nov 1864, addressing him as "Colonel" [I think a writer got confused about Col Leander RANSOM]. I got this info from the Cal State Lib California Information [card] File at Sac'to. I don't know if he's related to Joel W RANSOM who has a sketch and portrait in History of Santa Clara Co [1922], p 1377. Joel is also listed in something called "pen pictures from the gardens of the world; or Santa Clara Co. 1888. page 385", stored at CSL under qc979.473. The first-mentioned book is at the same call, add H67a. Lyman William RANSOM, age 79, born NY, occ: retired, lived at 114 McAllister in SFO on 29 Sept 1890, according to the SF Great Register 1890, 39th Assembly Dist, 6th precinct. 3. Hi Bob, This is a whole 'nother descent line, John Henry^6 [James^5, Joseph^4,3, Robert^2,1], with lots of records in Ulster Co NY [Katsbaan DR Church, Saugerties]. It is possible that John H & Margaret [m 1830] are related to a Charlotte, but not as her ancestor [birth date 1818, v. marriage 1830]. Do you have info on any of John's older siblings, who might have come to Ontario Co earlier [say 1818?] Thanks for your ideas, and another lead. I've got some Ransoms that settled in Victor, Ontario Co., NY which is near Hopewell and they're buried in the Boughton Hill Cemetery. They originally came from Saugerties, Ulster Co., NY. John Henry Ransom (1809-1877) and his wife, Margaret Snyder (1812-1888) were the parents of several children. Let me know if you think there's a connection. 3. A good candidate is Charlotte RANSOM, b 7 Aug 1818, to Joel^6 [James^5^4,Robert^3,Joshua^2,Robert^1] RANSOM and Charlotte BENHAM. Their family was mostly born in Colchester CT, but in 1814 they had a child at New Haven, Oswego Co NY. This child, Loomis E, b1814, m 1847 in Hopewell, Ontario Co NY, suggesting that the family stayed around the fingerlakes area. [I also don't vouch for the descendancy listed, because WCR made many errors, including several typos in this entry.] Charlotte has only a birth date listed, no place or further info. Her father, Joel, died in 1820, and a little brother was born in 1824 [barring a long gestation or different father, this could be a typo for 1821, 7 months after Joel's death]. Joel^6 family is listed in Wyllys C RANSOM's book at #46. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mransom/books.html#wcr and Loomis E is listed at #118. Loomis moved to Flat Rock, Wayne Co MI by 1843; his 3 children are listed as born before his marriage in 1847 . . . Perhaps they are children of his wife's previous marriage?? There is a Charlotte RANSON listed in an 1851 will/probate/estate matter in Canandaigua NY. [from records at the Ont Co NY GenWeb site] Happy Hunting!
