Several relatives have made trips to VA and WV looking for info on my g-gf George Washington Ramey. We don't know who George's father was. His mother was Lucy Ramey. George was given her surname because she was unmarried when George was born. We think Lucy was from NC. Later Lucy married Isham Doss (before 1835). location unknown. Lucy had two children (James & Jane) by Isham. Census says James was born in NC in 1835. Later Lucy & Isham moved to VA. They are found in Wythe County,VA census of 1850. This census says: Isham Doss,age 55,laborer,born NC Lucy,age 49,born NC son James,age 15,born NC According to this: Lucy was born in 1801 and Isham in 1795. We think an Abraham Ramey b about 1788, don't know where, may have been father of George's mother Lucy. Abraham's wife was Ann Massey. We think they lived in NC. George Washington Ramey, my g-gf and wife Leahr Warf: We have conflicting data about George's birth: 1) From 186? to 1885 George and Leahr lived in Ripley, Jackson county,WV. 1870 and 1880 census records there say George was born in 1826 in VA. 2) From 1886 to death George and Leahr lived in Colo- rado. A state of CO soundex card says George was born in 1829 in VA. 3) George's death certificate from Brighton,Adams County,CO says he was born in June of 1831 in GA. 4) Cousin Griff thinks George was born in June of 1830, probably in NC. d 07/29/1902 Brighton,Adams County,CO (George) buried in a Ramey family plot in Fairmont Cemetary,Denver,CO wife Leahr Warf b 10/04/1830 Carroll County,VA d 02/05/1920 Brighton,Colorado m /1852 Wytheville,Carroll County,VA their wedding application was dated 10 July 1852. buried Fairmont Cemetary,Denver,CO Leahr's parents were John Warf and wife Patsy Harrell both born in VA. They were married in Carroll County,VA 14 August 1828 and they are found in the 1850 census there. They had a number of other children too. John Warf died 14 June 1887. John's father was Berryman Warf b in VA. Berryman's mother was Fanny Warf, unmarried We think George was in Confederate Army. We don't know where he lived when he enlisted or what unit he was in. Relatives found a G Ramey that might be him in Confed- erate archives. It lists him as a private in Co. F, 11th Battalion VA reserves 4th battalion VA reserves Wallace's Battalion VA reserves company F Giles reserves stationed at Giles Court House, April 16 - Aug 31, 1864 There is a National Archives Roll (M861-Roll #66) that has a little more. And since my gf William Alexander Ramey was born Ripley,WV in May of 1869. The 1870 and 1880 censuses indicate George and Leahr had 15 children. Relatives have verified that they had 14. One daughter Lily Susan is listed by a different name in these censuses. Two of their children died young. So they had 12 children when they left WV. In 1885 they left Ripley,WV and went West with 11 of their children for the free land. Daughter Lucy stayed in Ripley. She married a Straley. About 1994 relatives went to Ripley,WV and met Gene Straley a grandson of George/Leahr's daughter Lucy. George & family stayed in Kearney,NE one year and in spring of 1886 went to Iliff,Colorado area for a few years. In 1890 they moved to Brighton,Adams County,CO for life. Except for one son, my gf William Alexander Ramey, who stayed behind and finally settled in Sterling, Logan County, Colorado. my grandparents William Alexander Ramey and wife Adella Winifred Holden. My father said Will was a very shrewd businessman; that he started out with nothing and at the time of his death his estate was estimated worth $ 250,000. That is in 1943 dollars. "Della" Holden was a direct descendant of an English man Richard Holden who came to New England and settled in Watertwon,MA near Boston in 1634. I am a tenth generation American in this line. Paul Ramey, I have an Abraham Ramey from NC. I believe he was born<1800. I have that his father was a Benjamin Ramey, but I am not sure about that information.
