    3. Gloria, If your ancestors are melungeon/Indian then we're probably related! I have many reasons to suspect both. Strange stories. My aunt even said quite bluntly,"There are secrets about my mother's people you will never discover" ! Well, I have plenty of clues. My grandmother's name was Indian-(Etelka) and Latin(?) Vetula. I did not know her name until last year when my father blurted out," My mother's name was Etelka at Christmas dinner!" I exclaimed,"Dad it doesn't sound English (all he's talked about-his father's side-what is it?) He said quietly,"well, It's Indian." I said ,"gee.. Dad do you mean to tell me..you're Indian?" He quickly changed the subject, can not seem to find a picture of his mother and has refused to discuss her except for giving me three CONFLICTING reasons why she was not Indian! His sister gave me a fourth!) So was her sister's - La Vera Elzina. Sounds like a melungeon mix. They were odd people as I remember from my childhood-wore long black dresses and high laced black boots and kept to themselves in the hills of TN. My grandmother's parents-Redema Ramey & Samuel Good- seem to spring from nowhere onto a rich man's property and train his horses in order to buy the stables when Etelka was 10. Very strange. I have a picture of Mary JEAN -who was my great grandmother and married to a Travis Milton Ramey. I have paintings of them done by their daughter, my grandmother-Redema Ramey. Both have very dark copper colored ruddy looking skin (Spanish ?Indian Portuguese? Probably some mixture? ) Also,my great grandmother is wearing gold feather earrings! I have NC>TN> AL. If interested, I will send to you. Lots lof luck. Teresa Panther Yates

    3. SIGNS ON CHURCH MARQUEES "No God-No Peace. Know God-Know Peace." "Free Trip to heaven. Details Inside!" "Try our Sundays. They are better than Baskin-Robbins." "Searching for a new look? Have your faith lifted here!" An ad for St.Joseph's Episcopal Church has a picture of two hands holding stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments are inscribed and a headline that reads, "For fast, fast, fast relief, take two tablets." When the restaurant next to the Lutheran Church put out a big sign with red letters that said, "Open Sundays," the church reciprocated with its own message: "We are open on Sundays, too." "Have trouble sleeping? We have sermons-come hear one!" "A singing group called "The Resurrection" was scheduled to sing at a church. When a big snowstorm postponed the performance, the pastor fixed the outside sign to read, "The Resurrection is postponed." "People are like tea bags-you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are." "God so loved the world that He did not send a committee." "Come in and pray today. Beat the Christmas rush!" "When down in the mouth, remember Jonah. He came out all right." "Sign broken. Message inside this Sunday." "Fight truth decay-study the Bible daily." "How will you spend eternity-Smoking or Non-smoking?" "Dusty Bibles lead to Dirty Lives": "Come work for the Lord. The work is hard, the hours are long and the pay is low. But the retirement benefits are out of this world." "It is unlikely there'll be a reduction in the wages of sin." "Do not wait for the hearse to take you to church." "If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns." "If you don't like the way you were born, try being born again." "Looking at the way some people live, they ought to obtain eternal fire insurance soon." "This is a ch_ _ ch. What is missing?" --------- (U R) "Forbidden fruit creates many jams." "In the dark? Follow the Son." "Running low on faith? Stop in for a fill-up." "If you can't sleep, don't count sheep. Talk to the Shepherd."

From what I have so far our Rameys have bounced from Rabun Ga to Oconee SC and back again. They did not seem to venture far. I have no found them anywhere else so far. Joel Ramey was buried in Virginia but only because of the war. I have one Daniel in my file but so far have not found a connection, he was married to Polly Morton in 1818. No Jacob's found. If I can help any more please let me know. Cindy

    3. What Cheer, IA is in Keokuk County. The Iowa Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 7735, Des Moines, Iowa 50322-7735, has death, marriage and land ownership publications available for Keokuk county in those years. There are publications available for other Iowa counties, also. They may be willing to research state census records for your people. Iowa took a state census in between federal census years and has records for 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925.
