In my line, it was Rainwaters, until our Grandfather joined the Army Air Corp. He went in as a Rainwaters, and soon became a Rainwater. Guess maybe the "S" was too confusing for the US Gov. Although, his old SS card shows Rainwaters, the SS info on the Internet shows Rainwater.....When his son was born, they listed Rainwater on his birth certificate. So, we are actually the second generation of Rainwater. Within our own family group, we have both, Rainwater and Rainwaters. I agree that it was either how people heard it or how they wrote it down.
