    3. Susan, Major Charles Cicero Rainwater and Sarah Hannah Fowler Rainwater had no children. He was a first cousin of my g-g-grandmother, Lucinda Caroline (Rainwater) Leabo. Early in my research, I thought his father, Moses Fowler Rainwater (a relative of Sarah's family) was my Lucinda's father also, but turned out to be her uncle. I have several items on C. C. and Sarah. I wonder if the sketch at Duke is the same as the one at the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis (see below). C. C. was a prominent businessman in St. Louis and also a leader in the Confederate Veterans organizations. I also have recently received copies of records on them which were donated by Fowler relatives to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri -- Rolla which I have not yet added to the list below. Charles Cicero Rainwater [1838-1902] - obituary, "Maj. Rainwater Dead" in St. Louis Daily Globe-Democrat, 11 November 1902, p. - obituary, "Major Rainwater's Death Was Sudden" in The [St. Louis] Republic, 11 November 1902, p. - application for membership in Society of Sons of the Revolution (SR) - biographical sketch and noted, Walter B. Stevens, The Fourth City, 1764-1909, volume I, pp. 146, 447; volume II, pp. 757-758 - medical certificate to retire from Confederate States Army, 17 February 1864 - correspondence, 1885-1899, Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (RG 75), National Archives, Washington, D.C. - biographical sketch of John W. Fowler, Goodspeed's History of Cole, Moniteau, Morgan, Benton, Miller, Maries, and Osage Counties, Missouri, 1889, p. 708-709 Sarah Hannah (Fowler) Rainwater [1839-1937] - biographical sketch, manuscript in Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis, Mo. - noted, Walter B. Stevens, The Fourth City, 1764-1909, vol. I, p. 1048 - biographical sketch of John W. Fowler, Goodspeed's History of Cole, Moniteau, Morgan, Benton, Miller, Maries, and Osage Counties, Missouri, 1889, p. 708-709 Maybe I can send them a copy of what I have and see if it is different from their memoir. I expect that it is the same, but may not be. Ross Cameron >>> "Susan Chance-Rainwater" <scr@ncc.com> 06/16/99 11:05PM >>> I don't know if anyone on the mailing list is a descendant of Major Charles C. Rainwater, CSA Ordinance & Artillary officer. If there is a descendant about, you might be interested in the manuscript of Mrs. Charles C. Rainwater, his widow, which is held by Duke University Special Collections. http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/ It is a mere $8.00 to get a copy. Most of the document is a Civil War memoir. The genealogical info follows: Mrs. Rainwater's father was Samuel Fowler of Maryland, who resettled in Cole Camp, Renton Co., MO. His daughter, whose first name is never given, married Charles C. Rainwater of Ray Co., MO in Sept 1858. She says that her husband's parents "were of Carolina and Tennessee stock". The remainder is the story of her Civil War experiences.
