    3. Fellow Rainwater researchers, I have been a subscriber from the beginning when the list was maintained privately without Rootsweb help. Although I have received all the messages, I have been working on other lines so I have not read and digested all of the material. I have been working on my Lebo/Leabo/Lebow ancestry lately because of contact made with distant cousins in that line. So I thought I would get back to the Rainwater group to see what anyone has on my line. I am Ross J Cameron, son of Bonnie Ruth Patton [and Wilburn Triece Cameron], daughter of Floy Verna Lebow [and Earl Henderson Patton], daughter of Isaac Martin Lebow [and Martha Alice Baugh], son of Lucinda Caroline Rainwater [and Jeremiah W. Leabo], daughter of John N. (apparently Nelson) Rainwater [and Barbara Emert], son of Moses Rainwater I have a lot of data on the descendants of Lucinda Caroline Rainwater and Jeremiah W. Leabo, though it is not complete. I also have some data on the descendants of other children of John N. and Barbara Rainwater: Enoch F., Angelina (mar. Artman), Charity Elizabeth C. (mar. Matthew Switzer). I have been told that John Berry Rainwater and Alexander Martin Rainwater are sons of John N. and Barbara Rainwater. According to the message below, they are not or may not be. However, there are other children listed below that I did not know about. Can anyone tell me what evidence there is for the children of John N. and Barbara Rainwater? I am particularly interested in the Jane Rainwater who married Isaac Leabo because Isaac is probably a relative of my Jeremiah. Jeremiah's sister Rhoda M. Rainwater was married to Ashley Wynn Rainwater, the son of James and Delilah Kiefer Rainwater, I also have some data on their descendants. I have appended a message from last year below with additional data on this line. As stated in that I also have a lot of records on the family of Moses Fowler Rainwater and Elizabeth Clay Oliver, whom I originally thought were Lucinda's parents. I was going to attach some other files I have on Rainwaters but instead will send them as separate messages. ********appended message begins here******** From: Ross Cameron To: NARA.INTERNET("schimmel@northlink.com"), NARA.INTE... Date: 3/23/98 2:54pm Subject: Rainwater Inquiry March #5 -Reply Dear L. Bedell, I have not been working on my Rainwater lines lately (since I moved last summer), however, I think I can identify the family you are inquiring about. I don't have all of my records easily accessible, but here is some information to get us started. Your Elizabeth C. Rainwater, born 10 May 1846, was Charity Elizabeth C. Rainwater, the sixth child of John N. Rainwater (ca. 1798, NC - 20 Oct 1867, Ray Co., Mo.) and Barbara (Emmett) Rainwater (ca. 1809, TN - ca. 1870s[?]). Incidentally, John and Barbara Rainwater's fourth child was my g-g-grandmother Lucinda Carolina Rainwater (3 Feb. 1831, [Sevier Co. ?], TN - 24 Jun 1905, Springfield, Greene Co., Mo.) who was married 27 May 1846 (just before her younger sister Elizabeth was born) in Ray Co., Mo., to Jeremiah W. Leabo ( 18 Aug 1826, Whitley Co., KY - 11 Mar 1893, Republic, Greene Co., Mo., served in Co. D., of the 6th Mo. St. Mil. Cav. during Civil War). In the 1850 Ray Co., Mo., census, Charity (shown as Carity E. C.), age 4, is listed with her parents, John, 52, and Barbara, 41, and her sister, Angelina, 14. In 1860, Charity (shown as Betty), age 14, is listed with her parents, Jno. W. (should be N.), 63, and Barbery, 51. In 1870, Barbary Rainwater (mother), 61, is in the household of Nan. Skidmore, 25 with Matt. Switzer, 24; Elizabeth Switzer (nee Rainwater), 24; Charles Z. Switzer, 3; and Corie (probably your Carrie), 1; John Artman, 12; and Barbery Artman, 14. Charity Elizabeth C. (Rainwater) Switzer's and Lucinda Carolina Rainwater) Leabo's other sister, the fifth child, was Angelina, who married an Artman, and the last two children in the 1870 census are probably hers though I don't have records handy to confirm this. I have not researched the Switzer nor Artman families very much. Incidentally, since you are probably interested in other Switzers, also in the 1870 Ray Co., census, there is an Allis (probably Alice) Switzer, age 14, living in the household of James Clark, 40; Catherine Clark, 33; John F. Rainwater, 13; Adam B. Rainwater, 11; four Clark children; and Robert F. Rainwater, 21. Catherine Clark was the recent widow of Enoch Rainwater, who was the older brother of Lucinda Caroline, Angelina, and Charity Elizabeth C. Rainwater. In 1860 Enoch, 31, is listed with Cate, 23; M. J., 6; Jno. F., 4; and A. B., 1. If my memory serves me right (since I don't have the records readily available) the maiden name of Catherine, Enoch's widow who married James Clark, was Remley. And in 1850, Enoch, 21, is in the household of Jere. Leabo, 24; Lucinda C., 18; and James D., 2. Allis Switzer, 14, might be a younger sister or other relative of Matthew. The Rainwater 1840-1920 Census Linkage chart for Missouri which I have started does not provide state of birth and I don't have the full census readily available to see if she was born in Ohio, too. Incidentally John N. Rainwater was probably the older brother of Moses Fowler Rainwater, a prominent Ray County pioneer, Methodist minister, farmer, surveyor (if my memory serves me right), etc., who married Elizabeth Clay Oliver, a cousin of Henry Clay the Great Compromiser. I also have a lot of information on Moses and Elizabeth and their family, primarily because I first thought Moses might be Lucinda's father since he was the only Rainwater in Ray Co. in the 1840 census (where Lucinda was married in 1846) and he had a daughter in her age bracket. Moses and Elizabeth had 10 children I believe, mostly daughters. Their son, Charles Cicero Rainwater, was a Major in the Confederate Army and a very prominent businessman in St. Louis after the war. I would be happy to exchange information with you so that I can add your line (if you are descended from Carrie as I presume you are) to my files. John N. Rainwater is presumed to be the son of Moses Rainwater (b. ca. 1770-1775, N. C.) Ross Cameron >>> Schimmel <Schimmel@aol.com> 03/21/98 07:26pm >>> Want info on Elizabeth C. Rainwater born 5-10-1846 who married Matthew A. Switzer on May 10, 1865. They had one known child - Carrie Switzer. Elizabeth died 3-4-1875 we think her family was from Tennessee. He was from Ohio. Here she lived until her marriage About 1823, soon after her father's death (at age 14), Barbara was married to John Nelson Rainwater in Sevier Co., TN. John Nelson was born circa 1798 in the State of North Carolina. John Nelson and Barbara Rainwater were listed in the 1830 Fed. Census of Sevier Co., TN. They had 3 children in the household at that time: one male under 5 yrs.; 2 males 5-10 yrs. Her husband John N. was also listed on the 1837 Tax List of Sevier Co. He was taxed for his landsin the 4th Civil Dist. Barbara and her husband John N. were still in Sevier Co., TN in 1840 and were listed in the census with six children in the household: one female under 5; 1 female age 5-10; 2 males and 1 female 10-15; and 1 male and 1 female 15-20. About 1845, she and her husband migrated with their children to Ray Co., MO. There they were listed in the 1850 Federal Census. There were only 2 children in the household now: Angeline, age 14; and Charity E.C. age 4. There have been no other records of Barbara and her family found after the 1850 census. But Census, Marriage and other official records give us the names of most of the family members.
