Lee 94th House Comm: / Senate Comm: / House Vote: Yeas Nays Senate Vote: Yeas Nays ---------------------------------------- House Action Senate ---------------------------------------- 3/14/95 Read 1st Time 3/14/95 Passed/Adopted ---------------------------------------- Code Sections amended: HR 565 LC 25 0127 A RESOLUTION 1- 1 Recognizing Rainwater's General Merchandise store; and for 1- 2 other purposes. 1- 3 WHEREAS, Ira and Rachael Rainwater opened Rainwater's 1- 4 General Merchandise in Rex, Georgia, in 1937; and 1- 5 WHEREAS, for the 48 years they managed the store this 1- 6 Clayton County couple served their small, rural community by 1- 7 providing groceries, gasoline, feed, and hardware to the 1- 8 citizens who lived in the surrounding area, and they were 1- 9 always available to render assistance to persons in need; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, Rainwater's General Merchandise became the focal 1-12 point of the community, a place where citizens gathered to 1-13 discuss current issues and visit their neighbors; and 1-14 WHEREAS, on August 15, 1993, David and Phyllis Bettis 1-15 assumed the duties of running the store, and they now 1-16 operate it under its original name of Rainwater's General 1-17 Merchandise and have returned the store to its 1930s design 1-18 and format while serving a community which has greatly grown 1-19 and is now a large suburban area. 1-20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 1-21 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize 1-22 Rainwater's General Merchandise as a renowned landmark of 1-23 Clayton County and Rex, Georgia, and commend Rachael 1-24 Rainwater and the late Ira Rainwater for their service to 1-25 their community. 1-26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body commend 1-27 David and Phyllis Bettis for their commitment to maintaining 1-28 a noted tradition in their outstanding Georgia community. 1-29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 1-30 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 1-31 appropriate copy of this resolution to Rachael Rainwater and 1-32 to David and Phyllis Bettis.
