Annie Look at your NC map a little closer. Surry Co is removed from Sevier Co, TN by the Smoky Mountains and almost 200 miles of rugged terrain. Likewise for Johnston Co being far removed from Surry Co, NC. Remember it is over 650 miles from Murphy to Manteo!!!! The connection between the Rainwaters of Surry and Johnston Co are fairly well documented, but it seems that the Sevier and Franklin Co, TN Rainwaters came there from the upcountry of SC.
