On February 19, 1868, the Tennessee Legislature passed "An Act to Secure to the Loyal Citizens of Tennessee, Recompense from the United States Government, for losses incurred by the Rebellion." In the vault of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Dandridge, Tennessee, is a book in which is listed "Claims filed under Act of General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, Passed February 19th, 1868 for Jefferson County". In order to be repaid for their losses, the claimants had to prove their loyalty to the government of the United States by two witnesses. The Jefferson County, Tennessee Genealogy Society has transcribed, indexed and published the data in the claim book. The following relates to Milas W.
