Hi Paula, I have just what was printed in Delgado's book on Vashti. Nothing more. I would appreciate anything on any Rainwater. Glidie
Hi Glidie - yes, I'm about a third cousin to Lyle, I think. There are a lot of Rainwaters in Western Washington and Oregon. My grandmother, Mary Catherine came across the plains from Missouri twice - the second time when the railroad was brand new! Her father was Jacob C., his father James (md. Delilah Kifer), and his father, James (md. Nancy Reagan). I have a wonderful Reagan (O'Ragan) book compiled by Donald B. Reagan - very thorough. He and his mother searched censuses for over 30 years to put it together. According to my data, James, husband of Mary Polley Mason, was the son of Benjamin and Sarah. Benjamin was the son of John and Susannah (possibly Bobo, but not proven), who was supposedly the son of John Rainwater and Mary Fussell. Ann T.
Margaret Ann Rainwater was the 4th child of Moses Fowler Rainwater and Elizabeth Clay Oliver. Her siblings were Juliett Oliver, Katherine Clay, Charles Cisero, Sara Frances, James K.P., Amelia McPherson, Maude Love, Mary Elizabeth, Alice M., Harry, and MayBelle (12 children). The 1850 Census lists Catherine 15, Charles 12, Margaret 10, Sarah 8, James 6, Aurelia 4 and Mary 8 mos. Hello John, Sorry I've been so long catching this-but better late, than never. First- Solomon was never !!! named John Solomon. Solomon and Ruth Felton had 11 children-not 16. The Ruth you mention as a child (I assume you got this from the land records in Anderson Co.,SC?) is actually Ruth signing her "dower rights" in the land Solomon left-when all the kids sold out to Job. I believe Ascenath was Solomon's sister, not his daughter. Ruth and Solomon's children are as follows: 1- Job-bn ca 1780-md Didama Hembree, daughter of Rev James Hembree and his wife Ascenith Gentry. md ca 1800/05 and died abt 1863 in Milton Co.,Ga.They had 11 children. 2-John Rainwater-bn ca 1781-md Martha Adams and died 22 July 1836 in Greene Co.,Ga.They had 11 children. Martha died in Brenham,Wn,Tx at the age of 89.Martha was the daughter of Richard Adams of Spartanburg Dist.Several of her children migrated to Tx and helped settle the area. 3-Delilah (Dilly)-bn 4 Oct 1785-md bef 1805 to Richard Phillips who became a preacher. She died 2 Sep 1865 in Cuming,Forsyth,Ga.They had 8 children. 4-Rebecca-bn 20 Ocr 1786-md Aaron Oliphant (he died 15 Oct 1826).Rebecca died 17 Jan 1863 in Brenham,Wn,Tx. 5-Laodicea (Dicy)-bn ca 1788(age 65 on 1860 census Forsyth Co.,Ga) GS# 0803121-pg 497 fam 916. Never married. She died 23 Jul 1867. 6-Solomon,Jr-bn 1 Jan 1790-md 8 Dec 1825 to Nancy Linn, daughter of John Linn and Viney Ivey.Solomon died 11 Oct 1856 and Nancy died 14 Apr 1858-Their 2 youngest sons Harras (Horace) age 10 and Virgil-age 13 were in the household of Henry Smith as their guardian, on the 1860 census. GS# 0803126-pg 291 fam 702. 7-Joshua-bn 1792-md 10 Feb 1820 to Mary "Polly" Peterson He died 15 Aug 1878 in Hico,Hamilton,Tx 8-Rhoda-bn ca 1794-md before 1821 to Lasten Cox. (nothing more known) 9-Abner- bn ca 1799-md 2 Nov 1826 to Elizabeth Henry. He died 18 Sep 1872. 10-Rachel-bn ca 1803 (age 47-1850) living with Richard and Delilah Phillips in Forsyth Co.,Ga on 1850 census. On the 1860 she's age 57 and living next door with Dicy(child # 5) Neither one ever married. 11- Elisha Gentry-bn ca 1807-md 2 Nov 1826 in Warren (Upson) Co.,Ga.to Elizabeth Grant.Elizabeth died 26 May 1849 and Elisha md 2nd Nancy "DoneyMensy" Sturdevant on 31 Aug 1849. Several of the husband's signed (in place of- women were supposedly of the "weaker" sex, I suppose and were supposed to have a male in charge of whatever belonged to the women.) on the land records in SC. when Job bought everyone out. This is just a rough sketch of the family-each family builds on the other's. Hi Bob, Back in Jan you asked if anyone had a list of Silas Mercer R.'s children. I went through my files after things settled down and this is what I found: Silas Mercer bn 25 Jul 1825 in Spartanburg Dist SC.,son of Miles and Nancy (Edwards) Rainwater. On the 1850 census for Fayette Co.,Ala, he is age 25 and Mary Jane Hindman (his wife) is age 15. Also in the household is his mother Nancy-age 60 (GS# 0002347-fam 113) Both Silas and Mary Jane are buried in Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Cem. I assume Nancy is also there in an un-marked grave as she is not listed in the cemetery book.Silas died 8 Nov 1902. Mary Jane was bn 1 June 1835 and died 27 Aug 1905. Their children; 1-Hannah A.-age 6 1860 2-Miles S.-bn Sep 1857-md 11 Jan 1888 to Sarah Frances "Fannie" Allen (bn Sep 1863 and died 1943) Miles died 21 Jul 1911. In answer to your query, do you have the following? William Rainwater Jr. b. before 1771 md. Sallie (Granny Cherokee) (two sons, James & Vincent) son James Rainwater b. 1791 Richmond, NC md. Rockingham, NC d. 27 Jul 1871 Crawford Co., AR md. Katie (Kathy) McCall b. 1795 Scotland/or Ireland (8 children) son John Sanford (or Sanborn) Rainwater b. bef. 1830 d. of Crawford Co., AR md. Della Townsend son Robert Allen Rainwater b. abt 1859 AR md. Kate Wyatt (5 children) (don't have their children listed in my database) If you don't have family group sheets, I can give you that. Four of Nancy Rainwater's children are buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Alabama. Even though these joined the Methodist Church, I would guess that Nancy remained a Baptist and is buried in a Baptist Church cemetery nearby. I find it hard to believe that her children would not mark her grave in some way. Children buried in Wesley Chapel: (1) Sarah Rainwater wife of Livingston Bobo (2) Miles Rainwater, Jr. married to Sarah Edwards (3) Silas Mercer Rainwater married to Mary Jane Hindman (4) Jane Amanda Rainwater wife of William Waldrop Her daughter Vashti Rainwater wife of David J. Crossley is buried in Nations Poplar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Montgomery County, MS. Does anyone know where her other children <Mary "Polly", Amelia "Milly", and Mariah are buried? Annie: Am extremely interested in your reference in the NC Rainwaters -- specifically Mary Ann Rainwater b. abt 1768, m. Burwell Perry. I am a part of a Perry Group who have been searching for the parents of Mary Ann and of some proof that she was indeed married to Burwell Perry. Would really appreciate your input on our search. I have a letter written by the son grandson of Garbiel Rainwater in about 1940 that his g-gf LEVI RAINWATER migrated to TN between the War of 1812 and 1830 while his two sons and daughters went from Spartanburg Co to the newly opened Cherokee lands west of the Chattahoochee River in GA after 1832. Gabriel and James E. RAINWATER (another of the preachers Jamess) are in Cherokee Co. After Levi's death in 1855, they sell a 40 acre tract of land in Roseville, Illinois that Levi had received as a bounty for service in War of 1812. This land sale is transacted in Cherokee Co, GA and sale is to residence of Spartanburg Co, SC. The heirs of Levi are listed as: James E. Rainwater Gabriel Rainwater Letty Low (snl) Daniel Pettit (snl) Do not know what happened ot James E. but Gabriel and wife Nancy Toney Rainwater migrate with two daus to Blount Co., AL after Civil War, probably in early 1870's and Gabriel and Nancy are buried near Blountville, AL. Bob,Subj: More too many Jamess Date: 99-02-05 18:00:17 EST From: SaZaBY To: [RAINWATER-L]@rootsweb.com Lets make this even more complicated and remember that we had another preacher, James E. Rainwater, son of Levi Rainwater, who came to Milton Country and/or Cherokee Co, probably with brother Gabriel in late 1830's. Milton Co is the north head of Fulton Country (Atlanta) and went bankrupt in 1931 as did Campbell Co which forms the butt bottom of Fulton and as we have noted was the residence of the other two James. James E. and Gabriel settled a deed on some land in IL in 1856 after the death of Levi along with bro-in- laws Letty Low and Daniel Pettit. Milton was created in 1857. Remember that Job Rainwater was also in this same area and is the father of one of the other James R's. He was a very active pastor in the Cherokee/Cobb County area for many Baptist Churches. I have gone to the Mercer University library in Macon , GA and gone thru some of the old Baptist Association Records and James E. and Job were very active together in many of these churches, however they were cousins many time removed, since Job descended thru James, son of old John while James E. and Gabriel decended from Levi thru the two John Jr, that came to Spartanburg Co, one born in 1734 and Levis father born in 1752. That is what perplexes me is that all these cats were running around and using only the names John and James(not to mention Miles). Old Gabriel had been lost til I resurrected him. Don Pruitt Hope this got thru, I am getting senile
Dear family, please add Ben Nance, Rainwater descendant of Matthew Rainwater /Mahala Snapp. Thanks. Rachel Sue bfnance@earthlink.net> >
