Date sent: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 10:32:00 -0600 Dear Bob: At the library, yesterday, I happened to pick up a book "Abstracts of The Early Deeds of Franklin County, North Carolina 1779-1797" by Joseph W. Watson published by the same in 1984. Of interest I send the following: FRANKLIN COUNTY DEED BOOK -1 A Register for the County of Franklin for the Year 1779. Rerecorded in the Year 1802 by Green Hill, P. R. #147 p. 147 JAMES MILLES of Warren Co., N. C. to BENJA. HILL of Franklin Co., Aug. 2, 1780, for 1,200 pds. current money a tract of 96 acres in Franklin Co. adjoining GEORGE BLEDSOE and is the land on which JOHN RAINWATER, Junr., formerly lived. Wit: WM. WILHITE, THOS. E. MILLES. FRANKLIN COUNTY DEED BOOK - 6 A Register for the County of Franklin Containing Deeds, etc. Anno Domine 1785, 1786 & 1787, Green Hill, P. R. #891 p. 200 BENJAMIN HILL of Franklin Co. to JOHN WILLIAMS of same, March 2, 1789, for five pds. specie a parcel of ten acres lying on the waters of flat rock Creek adjoining BROWNING WILLIAMS' old corner, JOHN RAINWATERS' old field, BENJA. WILLIAMS, JERRY WOOTEN, and BLEDSOE. Wit: WM FAWN, J. WOOTEN. Question? John Rainwater, JUNIOR, who departed the adjacent land in North Carolina before August 2, 1780 ....... Who is he? John who married Mary, or John who some list as #2 and the fathger of John #3 who married Susannah? The first child known of John who married Susannah is given as Rebecca. She married Thomas G. Haynes. Does anyone know in which State and date Rebecca was born (approximately 1780) ?
Here is some additional information on the Gilliam Rainwater x Nancy Christmas marriage. Bob Schimmel ******** Published NC marriage record #100-01-203 Wiley Goodman bondsman. "I wrote to you several weeks ago about a Nancy, daughter of Daniel BALL of Warren Co., NC. I have found a record of her marriage bond where she married Gilliom Rainwater in 1784, Warren Co NC, but her name was NOT Ball. It was Christmas, Nancy CHRISTMAS. She was one of possibily two illigitimate daughters of Daniel Ball. "I have also found Ball's will. In his will he specifically lists Nancy Christmas Rainwater as his daughter and bequeths her $1. He owned a 500 acre estate on Martin's Creek right on the county line where in 1822 Granville, Warren and Franklin met at a point. The Ball property ran alongside the Christmas property and it appears Nancy was an illegitimate daughter of one of the neighboring Christmas girls. "There also was a son Richard Ball listed in his will. Richard's mother was Daniel's mistress Mildred Robertson (sometimes called Ball in records) and my gggg grandfather" -- from Faye B. Edwards, email address: Luvinmom@gloryroad.net as of 1/97.

I can help with Alice Rainwater - just a little bit. grm@castlenet.com provided three possible Alice Rainwaters to brewardf@ionet.net. I can't tell you which one is right, if one is, but I can tell you that the last one is not - the one with J. S. and Margaret as her parents. That Alice, having married William Clarence (Happy) Essman and only him in her life would make her not the appropriate one in this pursuit. That Alice was my grandmother. By-the-way, for all those truly interested, that Margaret is, in reality, Marget. Her maiden name was Scarber - Marget Scarber. That is the correct spelling according to how the family knew her, it is how she appeared as she was found in the first census in which she is found, and that is the way it is on her headstone in the Rainwater-Essman Mt. Hope Cemetery in Franklin County, AR. That cemetery sits just outside the Mt. Hope Church where J. S. Rainwater was pastor. Be it right or wrong, it is Marget Scarber. That is about all we know about Marget, inciden- tally, and I would be extremely happy to be wrong about her if anyone can step up with more and/or better information about her. I can also attest to the suggestion that Mountain Home is probably in AR and not OK, although a lot of small communities have disappeared over the years. Good luck finding the right one. Gene Essman
Hi Stephanie, Could you give us a time frame here, so we'll know what time period to look for? Also, I can't find a Mountain Home, Okla. I find on in Baxter Co.,Ark. Is that the correct one? Hi everyone, Just wanted to say that the only Rainwater I've ever found in Franklin Co.,NC was Gillian Rainwater and his wife Nancy Christmas. They married 7 Nov 1787 in Warren Co.NC Franklin and Warren were formed when Bute Co was discontinued in 1779. The 1790 census was made up of the 1784-1787 tax lists, so it doesn't give an accurate count, but it does show that they were there during that time period. He shows 1 male-16 and up including head 1 male under 16 and 2 free white females and 2 slaves. So, the first male and the second male could be the same person-which leaves a spouse and 1 female child He is in the Halifax district. He isn't there on other censuses and neither is Nancy. Suppose she is the Nancy who shows up in Montgomery Co.,Tn? There is a William in Montgomery Co, also. There was a William in Warren Co on the 1790- he has 1 male over 21 and under 60;2 males under 21 and oveer 60; and 4 females all ages. I wonder if Gillian ,Nancy and their family and William and his wife Molly Reaves (md 17 Nov 1787) moved to Tn? Gillian doesn't show up on the census but Nancy does and William does in his own household (even though it doesn't show his spouse-darn it). This would mean they were about the same age bracket. Gillian never shows up on any census again, so he may have died and left Nancy a widow-because she is shown as head of household in 1810. Thoughts to ponder. Need to go to Salt Lake and read some land and probate records. I know there isn't one for Gillian because I read all them in Stewart Co., when I researched Robert.(We're still missing some children for him, too) Will close and finish supper. Glidie W
Bob: Would be happy to share my "iffy" Rainwater info with the group. The reason I say "iffy" is because the Burwell Perry e-mail group I'm part of (along with Leila Mayberry) have not been able to prove that Mary Ann Rainwater was married to Burwell Perry beyond "family lore". However, here is my Rainwater info until proven wrong: Burwell Perry b. abt 1764, poss. Franklin Co NC d. 25 May 1840 Washington Co, TX, m. Mary Ann Rainwater (poss. the daughter of James Rainwater and Ann Regan) b. abt 1784, poss. Franklin Co NC, d. 1851 in Hancock Co MS. Children: 1. Mary Ann Perry, b. abt 1797 NC d aft 1859, Hancock Co MS, m. Jeremiah Monroe Henley 13 Feb 1813 Hancock Co MS 2. James Perry, b. aft 1790, MS 3. Orville Perry, b. abt 1801, m. Mary Mizell 4. Rebecca Perry b 7 Jan 1802, Warren Co GA, d 28 Dec 1881, Hancock Co MS, m. James Wood MeGehee 11 Mar 1827, Hancock Co MS. 5. Burrell P. Perry, b. 1804 6. Lourany Perry b 1806 TN, d. 1876, Hancock Co MS, m. John P. Spiers 1818, St Tammay Parish, LA 7. Richardson Perry, b 1817, Hancock Co MS, d 6 Mar 1836, at the Alamo, Republic of TX 8. Nathaniel Perry, b. 1819, Hancock Co MS, m. Parmelea ??, abt 1843. 9. Mary/Polly/Nancy Perry, b 1821, MS, d bef 18 July 1859, m. John Fisher 13 Mar 1838, Washington Co, Rep of TX 10. Diena Perry b 27 June 1821 Hancock Co MS, d 27 July 1851, Gonzales Co, TX, m. George Washington Guinn 7 Oct 1836, Washington Co, Rep of TX. 11. Martha Perry, b. 1826 12. Dianna Perry, b. 1 Nov 1827, Hancock Co MS, d. TX, m. Mark Washington Dikes 20 Oct 1843, Washington Co TX (Dianna is my gg grandmother) When Burwell Perry entered TX in abt 1829 as a part of the Stephen F. Austin group, he listed his wife as Jane, and we have found futher reference to Jane as Jane Botts; however, we found their marriage on 5 Jan 1838 in Washington Co TX. Further a Mary Ann Perry was listed in the MeGehee household in Hancock Co MS in 1850, so we don't know if that Mary Ann is Mary Ann Rainwater Perry (mother to Rebecca Perry MeGehee) or a Perry relative, and that she didn't go to TX with Burwell and he took Jane and later married her. We have more info on the Texas Perrys, Dikes, Guinns, Fishers and will be happy to share that. Nancy Abraham

Hi Everyone, Thought I would give everyone a problem to help solve. So far I've seen a lot of Rainwater data on-line about a lotttt of Rainwater's-but so far I haven't come across anyone who is doing research on the Dempsey Pace and Elizabeth Rainwater line. Anyone????? Well, Dempsey was the son of Frederick Pace and was bn in 1775 and is listed in the 1800 census for Chesterfield Co.,SC. He came with his brother John Pace ,via Tenn to Clarke Co.,Ala in 1809. His 4th child was born in SC in Oct 1807,so if he went to Tenn it was after 1807. His brother John was in Tenn 1805 and in Ky in 1807. Dempsey's 5th child was bn in Clarke Co.,Ala in 1811. He is listed on the 1816 special census of Ms Terr. along with his brother John. In the Dempsey Pace Bible are recorded these names and dates; Dempsey Pace was borned Feb 26 AD 1775,the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Pace. She and spouse Burwell Perry had at least three children: Richardson who died at the Alamo, Diana who married Mark DIKES in Texas, and Rebecca who married Mr. McGEEHEE also in TX. I have the following sources: DaBrice@aol.com as of 3/8/1997; They are listed as the great grandparents of Roger Simm RSimm18967@aol.com; and Leila Mayberry Lbmaybe@mindspring.com as of 10/6/97. Before you go gleefully off in an attempt to contact these folks, would you please not forget to post the PERRY lineage data for everyone's edification. Thanks, Bob Schimmel

Because the familes tended to travel together, many times the siblings of spouses who married other Rainwaters can be found. You say the burial ground has recently been censused. Any chance of getting a copy of that and posting it to the list? Bob Schimmel

I just had to post an update to this. It is Roger Simmons, and he is no longer on AOL. He had some computer problems that he was trying to get worked out, and was going to also get a new Internet provider. As soon as he lets me know his new address, I will pass this info along! Hi Everyone, I've read your exchange of information with fascination and have decided it's time for a question of my own. My husband's Rainwater descent is through his mother, Patricia Lynn Rainwater of CA. Her father was Gerald Wesley Rainwater, born 1914 in Butler, OK. His parents were Andrew Thomas Rainwater (born 1879 in TN) and Zerah Matilda Fudge. Andrew's father was John Wesley Rainwater, born 1846 in Dandridge, TN. I do not know John Wesley wife's name. Can anyone add anything to this line? I would appreciate any help!! Diana Dobbins, ICDJD@aol.com
