I have also seen a number of references to "Katie" being born in Scotland in 1798. At this point I place more faith in her being born July 20 1795 in NC. That information was published on page 262 of "Chestnut Hill: A Chronicle 1783-1986". I have also seen references to James being born in Surry Co, NC as well as Lufty Cove, Cherokee Co, NC, however, I currently use Richmond Co, NC as his place of birth. Ron

    2. Hi Susan, You will be happy to know I have found pages and pages and pages of information on the family lines you requested. I wish I could be so lucky to find as much information on my line as I have found on yours. I have marriage records, LW&T, death, civil war pensions, cemeteries, probate and estate records of your lines. There was no information on Humberson (Umberson) none on Mary Jane. There are some Elizabeth's and Martha's which I cant tell if they are yours or not. All the other names you requested I can help you with. There is a lot on Richard, Joseph and Delilah. It will take me quiet a while to type all of it due to the amount of information that is in this book. If you would like to give me your mailing address or you can call me and I will be happy to give you the info. I know you will be thrilled to have all of this. Of course, I don't know how much information you have on each of these family members; but I can assure you if you have mostly names you are in for a great surprise. Let me know if you want me to mail to you or if you want to call me, I will give you my phone number. Marilyn

After looking back on what I had emailed to rootsweb the first time regarding the book, I realized I failed to mention these are Clarke County Alabama records. I truly apologize, as I thought I had stated this. There are only 2 Rainwaters listed in this book, Richard and Nancy. However there are numerous other surnames. The offer still stands. If I can help let me know. Best Wishes, Marilyn

    3. Hi Annie, According to her family Bible she says she was bn Scotland-not Ireland and she was real small-4-5 when they came over. It seems like people moved around and went farther then than we give them credit for. If they were anything like my husband (and he isn't even a Rainwater!!)-if someone moves in a mile from you, it's getting too crowded and it's time to move on. They just liked their space, and every Rainwater I ever knew had itchy feet. Her Bible also states James was bn in Lufty Cove (which is present day Cherokee, Swain, NC) There is a large Cherokee Indian Reservation there now.(Eastern Cherokee) Swain was made from Jackson and Macon Co.'s in 1871. Jackson and Macon from Haywood; and Haywood from Buncombe; and Buncombe (in 1791) from Burke and Rutherford; and it all goes back to Rowan Co.formed in 1753 from Rowan Co.----whew--where would the records be? Hope this helps some-if it hasn't thoroughly confused you. Glidie ---------- > From: Annie <zapt@cyberhighway.net> > To: RAINWATER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [RAINWATER-L] attn: Ron48@aol.com > Date: Sunday, February 28, 1999 7:21 PM > > Hi Ron, thanks for the correction. When will we get through wading in this mire of misinformation? My data says that James Rainwater b. 1791 was born in Cherokee Co., NC, rather than Richmond. Also, the stories Eli's granddaughter told in the Rainwater Researcher indicate that Katie McCall was b. in Ireland, not North Carolina. Here is a quote: "...I will take up James, the great granddaddy of us all. James Rainwater, born 1791, oldest son of William and Granny Cherokee, married Katy McCall, born 1795 in Ireland. Her parents were Scotch-Irish. She was 7 when they came to the U.S. Where they landed, I do not know, or why they came. They must have landed somewhere in the Caolinas as they made their way across country to around Cherokee. James and Katy were married (according to some records) in May 1809 in Rockingham, Richmond, NC. If this be true, she certainly was a child bride. She always said she was 13 years old wen her first child was born. He was Eli, my gra! > ndfather, born Nov 1811. My father remembered Katy and spent much time with her when he was small. She lived real close to his father, Eli, and was always alone. He always regretted that he didn't learn more about our people from her but he was too young to be interested. I too, regret that I didn't ask him more about things he probably could have told me. The thing that impressed her most was the ship and the sea and it being so rough. Guess she was scared. ...it would be interesting to know why they moved on to Sandy Ridge, TN. We do know that the Indians (Cherokee) had lived at one time all along the French Broad River, which is now Douglas Lake, and in the Smoky Mtns. Long after they had left the French Broad county and were making their homes in the mountains, they would come back during the summer and fish, make baskets and hunt along the river. Each year fewer and fewer would come, until they finally quit. Daddy recalled when he was real small and at his Gran! > ny's house (Granny Cherokee, William's wife and Katy's mother-in-l > with her and that he couldn't understand them. She could talk to them and he said it all sounded like grunting to him, and he was afraid of them. She told him they were from over on Lufty Ceek. This is what she called the big creek that runs thru the Indian town now know as Cherokee., NC and that she was talking to them about "our folk" and that they would not hurt him." > This all sounds pretty authentic to me. PLEASE circulate, at least the address of the FAMILY SEARCH, to any roots-l you may belong (to) so that the LDS will consider to keep it running." ----Original Message----- From: Virginia Ewing [mailto:vewing@ctesc.net] Sent: Monday, March 01, 1999 5:00 PM Subject: LDS FAMILY SEARCH COMING SOON As the director of a LDS Family History Center, I have received a notice from Salt Lake LDS FHL, announcing the Beta testing of Family Search on line. It is not yet up, a problem with a piece of equipment, but will be starting sometimes this month and will be up only a few weeks as a test run. If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes on line the URL will be: > www.familysearch.org <. I have not been told exactly what will be available but know at least the Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog will be included. Family Search is the name of the program we have on CDs in all LDS FHCs. Some public libraries also have this program. FS includes the IGI, Ancestral File, Family History Library Catalog, Social Security Death Records, Koran and Vietnam war death records, and Scottish Church Records. For those of you not familiar with the various searches, the IGI is the International Genealogical Index. It includes, in alphabetical order, all of the names that have been sent to the Temples to have ordinances performed in their name. Names in the IGI are usually submitted by members, but not always. Non-members also submit their family names to get them into the IGI. Some of the marriages may have been part of extraction programs. The names were taken from courthouse records and checked and rechecked by several volunteers before being accepted as correct. Most people do try to send in accurate information but there are many mistakes. My advice is, always check the original source. Use the IGI to find where people with your surname would have lived and order the census and court records from that area. Ancestral File is Gedcoms of group and pedigree sheets sent in by members and non-members. The name and address of the submitter is included and hopefully will allow you to contact others working on your line. If the address is out of date sometimes a letter to the Membership dept. in Salt Lake will get you a correct address if the person was a member of the LDS church. Once again, the material is only as good as the research that went into it and some of it is pretty bad. Check it out before you 'adopt' it. If you find a mistake on Ancestral File, you can send in your corrections, along with your sources of proof, and it will be noted in the next update. The first submitter does not have to provide proof, but you do, if you are making a correction. You can add additions to a file, or submit a new file. You do not have to be a member to submit material. The Family History Library Catalog is a listing of every book, film and fiche available at the Salt Lake City LDS Family History Library. This allows us to find what is available for each locality, world-wide. It includes the FHL call numbers and a description of what is included in the film/fiche or book. The material from the books and film/fiche will not be on line. That is not something they can do, at this time. Hopefully it will be a possibility some time in the distant future. The film and fiche will still have to be ordered through FHC. Microfilm and microfiche are the property of the FHL and are sent into the care of the LDS FHC director and must remain under her/his care until returned. For this reason they are never allowed to be taken from the LDS FHC. Almost all of the microfilm and microfiche at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be ordered into any LDS FHL, anywhere in the world, but there are a few exceptions. Copyright laws prevent them from using material without the written consent of the owner. Some of the film and fiche where filmed by companies other than the LDS Church and permission to circulate these film to LDS FHCs has been denied. There will be a notice included in the description, saying it can not be circulated. Many of the SC microfilm where made by a company who has refused permission to allow the film to be circulated, but there are many microfilm available for SC, some covering the same material that is on the restricted film. The LDS FHL is a non-profit organization, and that is why it still cost only 15 cents a sheet for a microfiche, $3.25 plus tax to rent a microfilm for a month [may be more in other countries] and the SourceGuide and other home use programs are sold at such a reasonable price. We aren't allowed to make a profit, even in the FHCs. The books that are listed are not loaned out but can sometimes be obtained through an Inter-library loan through your public library. You can request copies of pages and if a book is indexed, by ordering the index you can see if your people would have been listed. In cases where the copyright has expired the book may have been filmed or can be filmed upon request. Never hurts to ask. 3. Hi everyone, Alexander Martin R/ is supposed to be the son of John Nelson and Barbara (Emert) Rainwater but--- He was bn 29 Aug 1820 in NC. All the other children of John and Barbara are bn Sevier Co.,Tn with the exception of Charity Elizabeth C.who was bn in Ray Co.,Mo. Kind of weird, isn't it. John would have been 22 but Barbara would have been 11 when he was born!! He could very well be a younger brother to John. They seemed to move to the same counties and states as John. Something to think about. Has anyone read the early records for SevierCo? Sevier was made from Jefferson in 1794 and the early records are at Sevierville,Tn.Some have been microfilmed by the LDS churdh but most have not. Alexander Martin R. was bn 29 Aug 1820 NC;md Mar or Apr 1852 in Polk Co., Ore to Sarah Elizabeth Emert. Sarah was bn Dec 1833 in Tn and she died 27 July 1905 ;he died 1890-both in Albany,Benton,Ore. 3. from the Book of Ragan Reagan by Donald Reagan 801 Henrietta Dr. Knoxville, TN 37912 phone 615/689-4438 Barbara Emert, the eldest daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Ragan Emmert, was b Tue. 6 Jun 1809 on the watshed of Copeland Creek, part of the Emert Cove area in Sevier Co., TN. Here she lived until her marriage About 1823, soon after her father's death (at age 14), Barbara was married to John Nelson Rainwater in Sevier Co., TN. John Nelson was born circa 1798 in the State of North Carolina. John Nelson and Barbara Rainwater were listed in the 1830 Fed. Census of Sevier Co., TN. They had 3 children in the household at that time: one male under 5 yrs.; 2 males 5-10 yrs. Her husband John N. was also listed on the 1837 Tax List of Sevier Co. He was taxed for his landsin the 4th Civil Dist. Barbara and her husband John N. were still in Sevier Co., TN in 1840 and were listed in the census with six children in the household: one female under 5; 1 female age 5-10; 2 males and 1 female 10-15; and 1 male and 1 female 15-20. About 1845, she and her husband migrated with their children to Ray Co., MO. There they were listed in the 1850 Federal Census. There were only 2 children in the household now: Angeline, age 14; and Charity E.C. age 4. There have been no other records of Barbara and her family found after the 1850 census. But Census, Marriage and other official records give us the names of most of the family members. When I bought it, the price was $27.50

    3. from "The Book of Ragan Reagan" by Donald Reagan 801 Henrietta Dr. Knoxville, TN 37912 phone 615/689-4438 Catherine Ragan Emert Williamson (mother-in-law of Jacob C. She was md. on Wed. 28 Nov 1827 (Family Bible) to John Nelson Williamson in Sevier Co., TN. John Nelson was a son of John & Nancy Williamson and was born on Monday, 3 Apr 1809 in Cocke/Sevier Co., TN. John N. & Catherine R. Williamson were listed in the 1830 Fed. Census of Sevier Co. They left Sevier Co., TN circa 1835 along with the other family members and friends. The couple was listed in the 1850 Census of Ray Co., MO. There were 7 children in the household: Elizabeth age 18; Lucinda (my great grandmother) 15; Lewis 13; Martha 11; John 9; Nancy 6; and James 2. Philip Riley had married and lived in a separate household. About 1864 Catherine and John again gathered the children and set out for the far West. This time to Benton Co., Ore from Ray Co., MO. 1. [RAINWATER-L] LDS Family History site
    2. The site is at:http://lds-online.com/family.htm An article from the Global Gazette in February says: LDS Family History Library WebSite in 1999 Rumors are flying about the possibility that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City might be starting a website. It's true. Curt Witcher, a director of GENTECH, attended their annual conference recently in Utah and came back with details about this long-awaited site. He shared them with me. The site will begin sometime in the second quarter of this year. Its name will be FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Services. FamilySearch is the copyright name of their CD-ROM genealogical indexes. This might make you think that these indexes will be available at the site, but this is not so. I know that many people will be disappointed that the International Genealogical Index and Ancestry File will not be included initially on the site... The online site will have the Family History Library Catalog. This is not the same as the version at the family history centers. It will be considerably enhanced. As well as author, title and LDS film number, it will include place names, surnames, keywords and subjects, all in searchable fields. This means that for the first time, researchers will be able to use the Family History Library catalog in the same way they use online library catalogs elsewhere (in public or academic libraries). The flexibility of the catalog will mean that we can find more books and films, more easily. The big question for most people who live far from Salt Lake (or even far from a branch family history center) is: when will the other FamilySearch options be included on the website. No decisions have been made about this yet. As I mentioned in my last column, the Genealogical Society of Utah, the family history arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has now begun a publications program selling sets of CD-ROMs on particular topics. I mentioned a six-disk set of British vital records indexes. Witcher informs me there are also sets of Australian Vital Records (price US$5.00) and United States Vital Records (price US$15.00). At the moment I am unsure exactly what is on these. Other projected series to be made available soon are vital records sets for Continental Europe, Latin America and Scandinavia, Ellis Island immigration records, the 1880 U.S. census and the 1881 British census (scheduled for summer 1999). The latter will be grouped in regions, but there will also be a nation-wide index.

    3. Hi Glidie, Thanks for writing back to me. I have various dates for his birth, but 1821 seems the most likely. His gravestone says 1820! I haven't some of the information you sent, so it does look like at least Barbara could not be his mother. Could John Nelson have been married once before? He was born in NC. Looks like another puzzle to solve. According to the 1830 census he had 3 children - 1 male under 5 (Enoch?) and 2 males age 5-10 - maybe Alexander and who else? These older two boys had to have been born between 1820 -1825. In 1840 he had 1 female age 5 and under, 1 female 5-10, 2 males and 1 female 10-15, and 1 male and 1 female ages 15-20. Maybe in the 1830 census an extra boy was added when it should have marked a female. But who are all the extra in the 1840? I still could place Alexander here. So you can see where I think Alexander is John's son but most likely not Barbara's. I am posting to the board so everyone can see and maybe shed their own thoughts on this. Also who is John Nelson's father?
