The following is of important general interest even if it tends to be a commercial announcement. Some of you subscribe to Ancestry, so you will already be advised. Regards, Bob Schimmel, listowner ****************** Reprinted form Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter Vol. 4 No. 11 - March 13, 1999 OREM, UTAH, March 11, 1999 -- Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com), announced today the exclusive online availability of a 35 million-name index to state and federal census records dating from 1790 through 1870. Often the most comprehensive resource from the beginning of the federal government through the Civil War and Westward expansion, federal and state census indexes list the name and residence for millions of Americans. In addition to traditional census data, the collection includes "non-population" schedules, which include listings of deaths, military service, and slave ownership. These schedules provide additional details that assist in locating family members or developing more extensive personal profiles. The collection of census data is available at no extra charge to Ancestry.com subscribers. However, you can search in the free area to see if a name is listed. For instance, I looked for my great-great- grandfather in the free area and found the following: SEARCHED FOR: WASHINGTON EASTMAN AIS Census Indexes AIS Arkansas Census Index 3 AIS Maine Census Index 1 This indicates that men of that name are found in one census index in Maine and three census indexes in Arkansas. The exact census records available vary a bit from state to state. Here is Ancestry's description for census listings in Maine: This collection contains the following indexes: 1800 Federal Census Index; 1810 Federal Census Index; 1820 Federal Census Index; 1830 Federal Census Index; 1840 Federal Census Index; 1840 Pensioners List; 1850 Federal Census Index; 1860 Federal Census Index; 1870 Federal Census Index; 1890 Veterans Schedules; Early Census Index If you are a subscriber of Ancestry.com and want to search the census indexes, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/census/. If you are not yet a subscriber, Ancestry.com's web servers run secure sockets so that your credit card information is encrypted for the protection. There are several membership options, ranging from $59.95 to $99.95. Complete information can be found at: http://www.ancestry.com/subscribe.htm

Annie, What information do you have that indicates that Joseph was the son of Miles Rainwater? According to the will of James (the Preacher) Rainwater, Joseph was his and Polly Mason's third child, after Zebulon Miles Rainwater and Emily Rainwater Golightly. Bob Schimmel, Listowner ************** ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Date sent: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 18:35:49 -0800 (PST) From: Jarmgirl3@aol.com To: Rainwater-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} Rainwater gleanings from (Annie) Dear Annie, I am intrigued about your "North and South Carolina orphans'" and believe I may have a piece of your puzzle. My ancestor was Aaron Rainwaters ca. 1799 and his wife Polly(who was born in NC). They lived in TN and were married sometime around 1819 because their firstborn followed shortly thereafter. In 1826 they moved from Tennesse to Kentucky and claimed a 100 acre land grand on the waters of "THE WEST CLIFTY" in Todd county. Aaron and Polly settled and farmed this land until his death around 1849. In his will from that year, beneficiaries were listed as eldest daughter Caroline(Stinson), James and Parks(eldset sons), Ferley Crouch(Husband of daughter Phoeby), Elizabeth(daughter), William(son), Mariah, Mary Jane, Zilpha, and Martha(minor children) Then shortly thereafter, in 1853 a land title petition listed Aaron's survivors as Polly Rainwaters, Caroline Stinson, James Rainwaters, Parks Rainwaters, Elizabeth Turner, Phoeby Crouch, William Rainwaters, (Mary Jane, Isabella, Susan and Mariah as minor daughters). I have listed marriages for: Caroline and John Stinson on 2-20-1842, James and Adelaine Jackson on 6-4-1844, Elizabeth and Samuel Turner on 12-12-1850. Phoeby married Mr. Ferley Crouch and Mariah married Mr. Robert Curtis(I have no dates for these). I have no information on marriages for the other siblings nor do I have dates of their deaths. My descendents are from the union of the eldest son, James and his wife, Adelaine Jackson who lived their entire lives in the Logan Co. KY area. I have been searching for the father of Aaron Rainwaters for three years, but have been unsuccessful in finding the home from which he originated. Since his wife Polly stated in a census that she was born in North Carolina then I can only assume Aaron originated there also. But, he just doesn't seem to fit into any of the "documented families" from that time. I was surprised to see a spot on you list of "ORPHANS" from North Carolina which listed a wife named Polly, a residence in Kentucky and a birth date ca.1799. He seems to fit into this like a glove. May I ask how you stumbled across him?? I would be curious to know any more input you may have on this. Thank you. My e-mail is jarmgirl3@aol.com
I would like to know whose son Walter L. Rainwater-bn 1875 in Fayette Co.,Ala is. Does anyone know? He's not from my line there and I can't seem to place him with any of Miles' descendants either, except he md Julia Hindman, daughter of Hiram and Sarah (Bobo) Hindman. So he'd almost have to be from that group-but whose? Any clues, anyone? Glidie
Hi Bob, Just a short note-I've found another child to be added to the family of Silas Mercer R. of Fayette Co.,Ala. Her name is Dora Metta R-the gr-grandmother of Gary Stevens who had messages on the list.I found her marriage record in SL. She was bn 28 Apr 1883 and md 23 Mar 1899. Thus she did not appear on the 1880 nor the 1900 in a family. She was under 18 when she md so she had to have written permission in front of a legal witness-which in this case was a Probate Judge. This was written on the bottom of the marriage record Hope all is well with you and Marty. We're fine ,but busy. I told Charles we'd better find jobs so we can have some time off. Seems like we're busier now than when we were working full-time. I can't visualize anyone saying "there's nothing to do- I'm bored", with so much to do. Oh well. Take care. Glidie
Hi Katherine, You missed one child on the family. Miles was age 2 on the 1860 census. John M was age 5/12 (bn Feb 1860)(census was taken 27 Jun 1860). Miles wasn't on the 1870 census. but I couldn't find the family either. Milly didn't die until 16 Oct 1864 (probably from complications of birth-Sarah was bn 2 Oct 1864) and Louisa (James and Sarah's oldest daughter is age 15- 1880 -bn 1865) I've also researched this line some but so far haven't really done too much on it. Maybe when I get my files sorted out,I'll get in some good research time and see what I can find. Hi Katherine, I have been reading over the info that you sent to your cousin Dennis RAINWATER in 1995 and I have been thinking about trying to contact you. Good news that you are on the RAINWATER-List. Also I noticed your sources were all in GA. Have you tried looking at anything in Alabama where your Great Great Grandfather James T. RAINWATERS was born and died? Do you know if there is a Head Stone on his grave, or cemetery records? Dennis sent me page 408 entitled Cullman County Churches and Cemeteries - Holly Pond Cemetery. It lists RAINWATER, James T., Sept 27 1836 - March 7, 1905 RAINWATER, Susan E., May 25, 1840 - June 22, 1912. How about church records? With two preachers in the family, I bet there are some church records somewhere. Have you tried for Civil War Records? He was the right age to have served from Georgia. I am descended from : OLD John RAINWATER-Mary FUSSELL James RAINWATER-Catherine REGAN William RAINWATER-Patsy HODGE Bartholomew RAINWATER-Nancy McLAUGHLIN Sciota Bethene RAINWATER-John Levi ELDER Nancy Belle ELDER-George Calvin LEWELLEN Dora DAWSON - Sciota Belle LEWELLEN I was lucky on this family because of family bibles and others willing to share the fruits of their research. Please let me hear from you. Sarah (Sally) Rainwater was my gg-grandmother. This is regarding the 1850 Census for Burrell Rainwater in Cobb Co. GA. I have examined that census page and there is a check mark beside every head of household name in the married within the year column. Burrell is family #1658 and the next family #1659 is Charles Fuller and wife Sally. There is a check, married within the year, by their name also. I have a copy of Charle's and Sally's marriage certificate and they were married 27 December 1840 in Benton Co. AL with Burrell's son, Allen Rainwater to Nancy Lambert. I suspect the enumerator was just checking off the names for the count. The following is a copy of the notes I have for Burrell Rainwater's family. There is still one son, and two daughters for Burrell that have not been identified. So far I have as Burrell's and Elizabeth's children: Jane b 1808; son abt 1810; daughter abt 1812; Allen Terry b abt 1814; Nancy Adeline Jan 1817; Sarah August 1919; daughter abt 1822; Elizabeth December 1825; and Louisa Elzora March 1828. >From Mrs. Mary Mills, Genealogist, P.O. Box 281, Chesnee SC 29323. Index to Cedar Springs Baptist Church Minutes, Spartenburg Co. SC. Organized 1787 (minutes for Dec 1794-Apr 1831). Listed as members: Robert Rainwater, John Rainwater, Burrel Rainwater and Elizabeth Rainwater. Robert Rainwater received by letter from Newhope April 1805. John, Burrel and Elizabeth received by letter from Unity Church, July 1819, 14 years after Robert. This John may be Burrel's first born son. (Robert had been excommunicated from this church for being drunk and disorderly. He was restored to full fellowship July 21, 1810. This Robert may be Burrell's brother.) By 1825 Burrell and Elizabeth in are Hall Co GA as members of Yellow Creek Baptist Church. Hall Co. GA by Sybil Mc Ray - Yellow Creek Baptist Church, Part II. The Yellow Creek Baptist Church minutes have been micro-filmed by GA State Archives in Atlanta. December 17, 1825: Received by letter, Burwell and Elizabeth Rainwater. August 18, 1827: Excluded, Barwell Rainwater for drunkenness. December 15, 1827: Received by letter, Joshua Rainwater. (Maybe the John from Cedar Springs?) July 19, 1828: Received by experience, Polly Rainwaters. (May be Burrel's second daughter. She would have been about 16.) September 20, 1828: Received by recantation, Burwell Rainwater. Burrell was a Private in Captain Clement's Company SC Militia, War of 1812. Census records for Burrell. 1810-Spartenburg SC: 1 male under 10; 1 male 16-25; 1 female under 10; 1 female 16-25. 1820-Spartenburg SC: 1 male under 10; 1 male 26-45; 3 females under 10; 1 female 10-16; 1 female 16-26. 1830-Spartenburg SC: 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 1 female under 5; 2 females 5-9; 2 females 10-15; 2 females 16-20; 1 female 40-50. 1840-Cherokee Co. (became Paulding Co. in 1853)Family #1658: Burrell, age 68, white, farmer, born SC; Elizabeth, age 58, born GA; Jane, age 42, born GA; John James, age 15, born AL; John, age 12, born AL; Joseph, age 7, born AL. Family #1659 is Burrell's daughter, Sally Rainwater Fuller born SC with her husband and children. Family #1660 is Samuel Ragsdale and wife Polly. Could this be one of Burrell's daughters? Charles and Sally Fuller's son, Ezekiel Young, married Sarah Ann Parris. I have an abundance of information on the Parris lines if anyone is interested Kay Ohana

This particular James Rainwater was my GGGrandfather. My standard post is as follows: James RAINWATER b. Sept. 27, 1836 in ALABAMA d. Mar.7,1905 in Cullman Cty, Alabama m. Feb.3,1857 to Milley PARRIS in Paulding Cty,GA b.about 1835 in GA d. Oct.16,1864 in Paulding Cty, GA children: John M. RAINWATER b. about 1859 in GA William J. RAINWATER b. about 1862 in GA Sarah Revelou RAINWATER b. Oct. 2, 1864 in Dallas or Hiram, Paulding Cty, GA m. to Phillip Alston BROOKS Oct. 20, 1880 d. June 19, 1950 in Menlo,Chattooga Cty, GA After Milley's death infant Sarah was taken in by her grandmother and by 1857 he married Susannah E. PARRIS WILSON b 5/25/1840 (Milley's cousin) d 6/22/1912 in Cullman Cty, Alabama I have talked with Dennis on several occasions and it seems we are at a brick wall. James Rainwater's parents are a mystery. This family is found in the 1850 Cobb Cty,GA census as follows: Rainwater, Burrel, 68 and b.SC Rainwater, Elizabeth, 58 b.GA (married within the year) Rainwater, Jane, 42 b.GA Rainwater,John James, 15, b.AL (This IS James T.) Rainwater, John, 12, b.AL Rainwater, Joseph, 7, b.AL No one is sure just who Jane is. A daughter or daughter-in-law perhaps? In the 1860 Paulding Cty, GA census we have: Rainwater(s), Jane, 50 Rainwater(s), John, 19 Rainwater(s), Joseph, 15 Rainwater(s), Margarett, 8, b.GA Rainwater(s), Amanda, 5, b. GA Jane has acquired 2 daughters and still no mention of a husband. Yet they all have the same surname. There is considerable speculation about Jane, including the possibility that she was promiscuous. And there stands the brick wall. I believe Pinckney F. Rainwater and his wife, Sarah, had a son named James that was born around 1837, but my records show his middle initial as an "A", not a "T". I have no info on this James A. Rainwater, other than his parents. Dennis may want to check this line out further. At 06:46 PM 3/3/99 -0800, marjorie l thomas wrote: >Can anyone help Dennis?
