There were quite a few Rainwater families in Pulaski County through out the 1800's and Stanton probably belongs to one of them, but I didn't find him listed on the census records for 1850-1900 census. 2. Susan Chance-Rainwater
    3. I have been alarmed of late at the number of people who thoughtlessly distribute to total strangers gedcom files containing the names and personal data of minor children. This is not a safe practice for the children and may cause you to be an unintentional accessory to a crime against a child. Gedcom files contain enough information that a pedophile cyberstalker could easily convince a child that he was a friend of the family and therefore safe. My genealogy program contains a filter to permit me to exclude everyone born after a certain data when building a gedcom file. I suspect yours does too if you do a little searching. Please use this feature when distributing data and do not thoughtlessly give out information on individuals too young to defend themselves from those who wish them harm. Susan Chance-Rainwater

Walter born 4/10/1874 either in Sanford or Fayette Co and died 4/19/1951. He is bur at Wesley Chapel Methodist cem in Covin, Fayette Co AL. Julia A. Hindman married him in 1899 or after in Fayette. They are listed in marriage Book 2 page 479. That book has inclusive dates of 1899 to 1906, so the marriage date (1899) is only a guess. One could get closer by searching census data first to see if they were listed as husband and wife in the 1900 census, secondly by checking the 1910 for children's birth dates. She was d/o Hiram Hindman and Sarah F. Bobo. I would need to check with Chuck Bobo's database to get the names of her parents if you need them. It's zipped and stored at the moment. 1. [RAINWATER-L] Fw: cache
    2. Annie
    3. Hi Bob - This is for you, but if you think our Rainwater net users should have it, fine.... Annie ---------- Date: Sunday, March 28, 1999 18:03:23 From: zapt To: "web browsers" <web browsers> Subject: cache by Mike Lafferty, computer columnist for Idaho Press Tribune, Nampa, Idaho: Keep this information with you and use it often. Clean out your cache. What's cache? It's a storage unit containing the address and a facsimile of every Web site you have visited. Every click on the Internet will deposit a copy of that site into the cache folder. It can fill up very fast. Individually, a Web site cache copy doesn't take up much room. Collectively, they consume a ton of space. I recently cleaned mine out and found 1,065 items in that folder. It had eaten up more than 5 megabytes on my hard drive. With my system, every byte counts and that 5 megs was something I couldn't afford to lose. So how do you clean it out? Simple. Assuming you are operating under a Windows system, access your main drive. This should be the place where your Web prgram is stored Just open the "My Computer" icon, then double click on your main drive. (Annie found hers through the little yellow file cabinet icon branched out from iexplore) In my case it's the C: drive. Find the program files folder. You should find the folder in that file which contains the browser program. Again, in my case it is Netscape. In that folder, you will find the user file. It will probably have your account name on it. My home account is with Micron and my user name there is mklaff. That is the name of the folder. In that folder you will find several subfolders - such as archive, netcast, news and cache. The latter is the one you want. Open the cache, highlight everything in there and hit delete. (Annie's wouldn't do that - she had to delete them one at a time. It took all day.) You may have to go into your trash can, on your desktop, and empty it in order to get the space back. What good is a cache? You can use it to find a Web site that you visited but can't remember the address. Parents can use it to find out where the kids have been surfing. (But then again, if the kids know how, they probably cleaned out the cache). So, the path to the cache is this >main drive --program files --broswer program --user name --cache folder. It's easy. Give it a try, you"ll save yourself some valuable hard drive space.

    1. Re: [RAINWATER-L] Newsletter
    2. Susan Chance-Rainwater
    3. Considering both the difficulties that Robert A. mentions of getting people to contribute and the costs involved in physical newsletter publication, I think it might make more sense to set up an online newsletter. It could change on a quarterly basis if new articles and info were submitted, or could remain unchanged if there was nothing new to say. An archive of the mailing list could be kept on the site, lists of sources for Rainwater documents, photos, gedcom files, etc. There would be no need to verify the work - just put on a disclaimer saying that the information is contributed and the reliability of it depends on the quality of the research. I do think it would be well to avoid the vitriolic tone that the newsletter occasionally took over certain issues. I too am irritated when people don't proved their work and have little patience with the "indian princess" myths, but it simply doesn't work to berate people about it. My personal experience is that you can pursuade some people, while others are permenantly clueless no matter what you say to them. Regards, Susan Chance-Rainwater

    1. [RAINWATER-L] Robert Albert and the Researcher
    2. grm
    3. Hi everyone, I have missed hearing from you Robert A.-but I figured with your move and everything, you just had too much to do. Then I heard from Lyle and Barbara and everything made sense. Hope everything has finally settled down for you. I like the idea of having both the newsletter and the Rootsweb available to all the Rainwater researcher's. It helps a lot to be able to re-read what is in the newletter and in the e-mail and compare notes. It's like talking to a relative and just some little something will jog someone's memory and they'll think " I know the answer to that". For years I've had a family history on a Rainwater family-then I started writing to someone on-line and they said-this man had these other 2 brothers, also and bingo- I was able to give him descendants and relatives he didn't know he had!!! Every little tidbit helps to solve puzzles. Granted, they also bring up more questions to be answered-but hey- that's what doing genealogy is all about. Sometimes,Hal, you have to collect all the Rainwater data you can in order to sort out families-even in KY!!! I'm from the extreme southern Rainwater line. By that, I mean Ga>Ala>Ms>La- but--- they came from KY!! At least mine did. However, as you say, there's a lot of William's (with no way to know who their spouse was) and the only way to track them is a nominal census. Get's frustrating at times. I also get kind of frustrated when someone comes on-line and says he can trace his Rainwater back to John and Mary. All I can say is- show us the proof!! The records just simply do not exist. If they do-they're buried so far in the Archives that no one can find them-and some very experienced researchers have tried, believe me. Maybe someone out there has an Old Family Bible with the Rainwater Family in it and it's buried in someone's attic in an old trunk. Well, I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings-it certainly wasn't my intention when I started this letter. I just wanted to say we need both systems because some people do not have computers and the internet and don't intend to. Glidie

    1. Re: [RAINWATER-L] Message from Robert Albert
    2. Hal Irving
    3. Hello to Two-Bob's: I subscribe to the Rootsweb Rainwater Maillist because of the rapid turnover in messages. I did not subscribe to Robert Albert's Rainwater Newsletter although he was kind enough to have sent me an early copy. My basic reason for this inaction was that the data I saw in the "free" issue was Robert's lineage, and the information, while good, concerned what I have learned to refer to as the "Southern Rainwater" Line. I am from the "Northern Rainwater" line. After looking at the volume of data that I had collected from the "Northern line" (mostly from the Webber Genealogy), I decided that collecting ALL Rainwater data was perhaps more than I was prepared to do. I do know and have met several "Cuz's" that do exactly that and have difficulty separating or keeping their data straight. When I first started Genealogy I chose my Mother's Rainwater line as a beginning because she was still alive and had been orphaned at age 12 and knew little of her family. I queried some Cousins that I had not seen in 25 years or more, one of these sending me a copied Webber Genealogy , some pictures, and some bible records. I managed to fill in some first hand information from my Mother and finally provided her with a booklet of data for her 87th Birthday...she died several weeks later. When I started I used 3 x 5 cards for storing data and after realizing that over three generations I had 26 or so Sarah's...I finally understood the immense task I had undertaken..........Never knew that one family could have so many children in so few generations.............. Anyway, I belong to several other Rootsweb maillists and each of them continue to have a quarterly publication.....I don't subscribe for the same reasons above....most subscribers and the mailist owner are from southeast USA with families spread over the southern states and most activity is in that area.......However, let me say this. Most maillist subscribers are quarterly subscribers for several reasons including the fact that the maillist owner and quarterly newletter owner keep things fresh including pictures of current researchers, items about current surname families, provides list of subscribers and which branch of the family they are researching (index).........and most all mailist subscribers (like myself) continue to provide any data they see on any branch of the family whatsoever......another factor is that we are not above teasing each other (once in awhile), not above inserting a story or poem (once in awhile), not above posting a prayer in the event that one member has a personal tragedy (once in a while).......we're cousins first and researchers second.....but 95% is genealogy and we don't take lightly to politics if they should creep in (once in a while).........bottom line is we try to be more human than some lists (not inferring anything).....and all take personal responsibility for control of the maillist rather than have "big brother" dictate terms of usage..(again not inferring anything).......we have fun doing genealogy even if we tell a fella member "Prove your words!" (once in a while)...... Enough "soapbox"......I enjoy the mailist and try to help others. I would be sorry if Robert decided to not publish his newsletter as others may find it very useful. I know that it must be a stressful effort and the first thing genealogy should be is FUN.........Please reconsider and look for ways to have fun..........one suggestion might be to include even the "wacky wags" in your pub with a note as to the originator/e-mail address and let your subscribers tell him/her to "prove it!".........I read your frustration about unproved data and the fact that you feel the need to "Prove" everything before you publish it.............Ask your subscribers who would like to take on a special chore to document all the William's and other all the Jame's in an effort to sort them out....we could all submit our Wm's and Jame's for these separate data base's........I know for a fact that I searched for the wife of James, who was Father of William that came to Kentucky, for many years and found only "Widdow" Rainwater mentioned in records...and in seeing Catherine Regan mentioned two different places..I plugged that information into my FTM program........Now I think the fact is that there were several Jame's Rainwater during that period and who knows which is which...........??? Good luck and best wishes for a continued Newsletter. Hal, a Kentucky descendant living in Northern California! "Just a Raggety Ann living in a Barbie world!"

    1. [RAINWATER-L] Uncle's Passing
    2. Joseph Senn
    3. Hi all, Report on my Uncle Jesse James Whitaker's passing. April 4th, 1914-1999 he was my father's, James A. Whitaker, baby brother. My Mother was Purna Mae Brown, wife of James Whitaker daughter of James Lewallen & Martha Coatney. James Lewallen (Chickasaw) was son of John Lewallen & Mary Rainwater. (Martha, daughter of Margaret Smith (Cherokee), and George Washington Coatney) Thursday evening, Mary Harper Bellis, Joe and I went to Willcox to see Uncle. We put goodbye presents in his casket with him. a fishing hat, an insurance ID with his name on it, baking soda for his stomache, a tamatoe off his tamatoe plant in his window, some pictures of him and his golf cart, a little salt because nothing was ever salty enough for him and the stuffed lion that his Niece Alice in Ark. had given him so he wouldn't be alone. We bid him goodbye and a safe journey. Friday, Joe and I drove to Tempe, stopped at the 'our Lady of Guadalupe' church in Guadalupe (Indians call her Tonantzin) then on to the cemetary. Uncle looked pretty good so we had the mortuary people place him in the chapel so if any one wanted to visit him they could. As it turned out, Joe Euni and I were the first ones there. then when everyone came, they gatherd at the graveside, so Fred, Ernie, Bob, Joe, Eddie (Tidey) and my son Kevin went to fetch Uncle for the occasion. Only the male Elders who went to get him visited with him kevin waited and let all the elder nephews go say goodbye to him, then the nephews brought him to his final restng place which was just at the West end of a long rose hedge and very close to Betty Jo Whitaker Tidey. Laura, we missed you. You really did a great job, everything was easy and perfect. thanks. ..It was a good gathering and evryone who chose to do so, spoke as the talking stick was circled clockwise. When everyone was mentioning how Betty brought Uncle to live in Arizona in 1975, it reminded me of what Mary Bellis said to me in Willcox. She said "You loved Uncle so much, how were you lucky enough to have him with you?" I told her I inherited him from my sister Betty. She said "You were lucky, she could've left you an old blouse instead of a wonderful old Uncle" I never thought about it like that before, but shes right. Betty left me wonderful gift. Wonderful adult memories to go with those I had as a child of him. He was always good to me. The services which were run entirely by the family, was a Circle of family who talked about Uncle one at a time. Afterwards, Debbie had a room ready for us at the American legion where we gathered and ate sandwiches and a cake that read "Gone fishin in the Sky" we had agood time yet many had to leave early. 1. [RAINWATER-L] Message from Robert Albert
    2. Bob Schimmel
    3. ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- From: "Robert Albert" <Robert_Albert_Jr@prodigy.net> To: <Schimmel@northlink.com> Subject: Rainwater Researcher News Bob, After my long absence, I would like to let you and others know -- if you will post portions of this email -- about the final two issues of the Rainwater newsletter. 1998 was a year of many things for me. Job duties became too much and that combined with some personal losses forced me into a retreat from publishing the quarterly issue of the Rainwater newsletter. For those who were past members of our little research "association" and have unfinished paid subscription fees, I will be sending out two issues this year most likely in late spring and early fall. I am interested to hear from those still inteerested in receiving a Rainwater family newsleter, therefore there will be a post card questionaire in one of the "last" two issues to obtain opinions. There are a group of very nice Rainwater descendants out there who appreciated my efforts and wish me to continue, but I fear they are the smaller of the two groups. I think that the Rainwater newsgroup on RootsWeb is a wonderful resource and I cannot thank you enough for putting forth this effort, but it has made it even more obvious (to me) that there are some people who want data, but hesitate to share theirs, one of the major problems I faced trying to print the newsletter. It became nearly a one-person effort. Also, I am frankly tired of seemingly being the only voice to try to keep the masses on track with their data. Maybe it is just me. Maybe I am the one who has everything wrong, but when people list things like: James, son of John and Mary Fussell who married Catherine or Catherine Ann Regan or Ann Regan -- a linkage which I have not ever seen proved by her name being on a document of James -- nuff said. Sure would like to see some solid proof. Please, someone post it so we all can be edified. Maybe we all are getting too serious about what started out as a pasttime hobby? Another problem is we all need to check our databases for the invalid lineage of: " John/Mary Fussell Rainwater had a son William, who was my ggggfather... " Considerable documentation exists indicating this particular William was an IDIOT. Will, the idiot, was a ggggfather of yours ???? You once told me, Bob, you had more than 60 documented Rainwaters in your database with the given name of 'William'. Our ancestors sure wore that name out didn't they :) , but it does show how careful research must be documented back to the correct ancestor William. If the records have been lost in a particular descendant's line, so sorry. Most all the cousins will try to help someone in that pickle, but guessing does not make good (or valid) lineage charts. Oh well, as you can tell, I am still my old frustrated self <G>. Nevertheless, I am alive and fairly well (some have asked, and I thank those for their concern). I am sitting back and reading everyone's postings, but since their are well over 100 subscribers to the electronic list, many who were not subscribers to the old printed newsletter, I am also interested in their ideas and responses to receiving a postal mail-sent reseach vehicle. Hope all is well with you and your wife and look forward to getting the next two issues of the newsletter out. Would appreciate your feedback too. Be honest with me. I look forward to constructive comments. Sincerely, Robert Albert, Jr.

She was born in Ohio and adopted by Wm. T. & Mattie E. Stevenson (also known as Stephenson) in IL at a few weeks of age. She was known by the name of "Maggie". Surname of Weddle has also been spelled Waddell, Weddell, and Waddle. The 1900 Douglas County census shows her surname still as Weddle at 11 years of age, even though it shows her as an adopted daughter. Bob Hi..here is another family bible I found at WWW.ebay.com once again I have nothing to do with seller or anything, just want it to go to it's family..just type in family bible in the search area.. Terri The great news is that the BINDING AND PAGES ARE TIGHT AND THE COVERS ATTACHED!! Hand written inside the front cover is "Presented to Elizabeth A. Williams by her father, Essex (CT) July 15, 1856." Between the old and the new testament are 4 decorated border family pages. The first entry on the first page notes the marriage of Elizabeth Williams to Alfred H. Pratt on September 24, 1856. There are three other marriages recorded, several births and several deaths. Other surnames recorded are Hendley and Perry. This family resided in the Essex-Clinton Connecticut area. We truly hope that this Bible will find a new home with a member of this family, a genealogist. --part0_922591714_boundary--

    3. K. Vanderpool, You did not indicate where your Miles Harold was born, but we have a Harold Rainwater in our line that was born in Sept. 1918 in Georgia and I don't have info on when he died and where, or even if he has passed away. I thought Harold might be the individual you're looking for, and I'm copying Gail Tabor on this reply, since Harold is closer to her family than mine(her uncle). If Harold is the Miles Harold you are looking for, perhaps Gail can provide more info. My g-grandfather, George Lowe, purchased this Bible at an estate sale sometime in the 1800's. It then became the Lowe family bible and has been passed down for many generations. However, because it still has some the Poole information in it, I would like to share it with others who may be researching this family. On the Family Record page, the following entries were made: John Rufus Poole was born the 9th Febry 1829. Amanda Emma Carothers was born the 10th April 1830. John Rofs Poole was born December 12, 1851. Robert Coleman Poole was born 5 July, 1854. William Rufus Poole was born 28th October 1855. John Henry Poole was born Feb. 3, 1858. Robert Cleveland Poole was born Jan 5th, 1861. J. Rufus Poole and Amanda E. Carothers were married the 21st November, 1848. Hope this helps someone out there researching this family!
