    3. I am giving Ancestry.Com another plug because of the importance of their activity to genealogy research, however this will be the last time should they lock me out of a supposed free area again as they did 3 weeks ago. Anyone who is so inclined has my permission to forward this comment to Ancestry. It would be nice if they installed a VERY obvious Feedback module on their intro page. Bob Schimmel ******************** Notice: With unfortunate timing, the folks at Ancestry.com released a free genealogy Web site this week. Unfortunate because they made their announcement the same week as the Mormons. The new free Web site offers the 10 million-name Ancestry World Tree and many free genealogy message boards. The new service is at www.familyhistory.com

    1. Re: [RAINWATER-L] Zebulon Miles Rainwater
    2. Dan Bruce
    3. Gildie, Thank you for the info on the two Zebulons, which can be as confusing as the two James (blacksmith and preacher). The Blacksmith was my ggggrandfather, so I have a fair amount of info on his Zebulon, although I haven't found anything on his middle name. The info you have on this Zebulon is accurate. As far as Ben is concerned, Benjamin F. was dead in 1857 at age 19 or 20 and single at that time. Since this was 5 years prior to the date of 10 Jan 1863, I think it's reasonable that the Preacher would not mention his youngest son in his will. The issue seems to be Zebulon Miles's date of death. Since the Georgia State Pen records that ZM entered through their gates on 19 Feb 1864, I come to two possible conclusions: 1. As far as James the Preacher was concerned when he wrote his will on 10 Jan 1863, his son, Z.M. was dead. Z.M. was convicted of killing the Preacher's youngest son, and there is a time period of 6 years between the death of Benjamin and Z.M. entering the state prison, and I haven't seen any documentation on where Z.M. was during this time. I'm sure "life in prison" was not a popular sentence for murder at that time, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was no communication between Z.M. and his family after his conviction. I do believe that Z.M was deceased prior to his father's death. Could it be that James the Preacher wrote his will in 1865 instead of 1863? 2. The date of the prison record is wrong. I tend to believe this is a less likely scenario. Sentences were handed out in terms of time, so one would think that keeping accurate records of when convicts came into the prison, what their sentences were, and when they left prison was fairly important. In either case, Z.M. probably received a death sentence which was carried out in the Georgia State Prison. Documentation does show that Ben F. was murdered, Zebulon Miles was arrested for the crime, and sent to the Georgia State Prison. I haven't tried to look for possible trial transcripts, but that would probably be an interesting dig, and would possibly shed some light on this Rainwater family tragedy. 3. Hi everyone, I have been trying to figure out from previous posts and my information who Alexander's father is? I have always assumed it was John Nelson Rainwater. He was born in NC. I know he married Barbara Emert/Emmett and they lived in Sevier Co., TN. Why canj't they be his parents? Couldn't they have married in NC? Or could he have been married once before Barbara? Alexander married Barbara's neice, daughter of her brother Daniel. This would make them first cousins. Anybody have any theories or answers? I still believe John and Barbara are his parents and someday maybe I will actually prove it. Thanks, Aldean

    3. MCar1310@aol.com indicates in a response to the attached note that Zebulon Miles died about 1857, which other documentation seems to contradict, and MCar1310 does mention some of the other documentation in the response. Documentation I have read shows that Benjamin F., youngest son of the Preacher, was killed on 12/8/1857. The Preacher's oldest son, Zebulon Miles, was accused of murdering Benjamin F. in an executive order dated 1/14/1858 and Zebulon Miles Rainwater, convict#1975, entered the Georgia State Prison on 2/19/1864 for murder. James(the Preacher) Rainwater died around 6/22/1871, and although I don't recall if he indicates in his will that Zebulon Miles was deceased, he clearly omits Zebulon Miles and refers to Lilla Ann as parent to Zebulon Miles's children. My records have always kept Zebulon Miles's date of death open. Then on 19 Feb. 1864 Zebulon Rainwater from Campbell County was incarcerated. (Note: Don’t know what for. Was this Zebulon Junior by any chance?) One of us is mixed up or we read difference parts of the book. Here it appears that Benj murdered Zebulon Miles on Dec 8, 1857. I went back to the FHC to reread this portion of the book, and it is missing from the library! Since Zebulon Miles nor Benj. 3. I am aware of at least three folks who apparently are flaming each other. At least they are doing it privately and not on the list, for which I thank them. My suggestion to all is consider that email has no sound, no word inflections, no body language as does voice speech. It's real easy to misunderstand something as toe-stepping when really what had been said was in the spirit of constructive criticism. Everyone gets excited now and then. And no one is perfect. Sometimes certain words hit another person on a personal raw spot even tho no offense was meant. I also have sounded abrasive in some emails at times, which makes me more careful now because I have slowed down and I take the time to reread everything before hitting SEND. If we can view every message for the information it contains, not for what attitude or mood we preceive the sender was in when they were in front of their keyboard, much unnecessary stress can be avoided. We are exchanging data. There are bound to be discrepancies, but be pleased that others are turning loose of sometimes hard-fought for information. Log conflicts in your notes as such and move on. Pertaining to takers who refuse to share ... I got them in my family also. Instead of dumping your entire GEDCOM on an unknown person, learn to send out feelers. Exchange bits of data in the beginning if you are worried about maybe not receiving anythng back. I got a message this week which said: "I'm researching _______ surname. Send everything you got". For me that is an obvious good use of my delete button. There are soft answers that can be used .... such as: I don't agree (instead of : You numbskull ! ) Please (instead of : I want, send all ) My documentation is ... (instead of : You don't know what you're taking about). Bob Schimmel, listowner

    2. For Dan Bruce, My response about where and when Zebulon was born was directed to Dan Rainwater who had said that Zebulon was born in GA. Your post agreed with everything else I've seen about where he was born. Sorry for that confusion. I should have been more specific about which Dan I was responding to. I do not have much on Daniel, just his two marriages and the children they produced. I'm afraid I have to admit that I've not done any research on Rainwaters at all. Everything I have has been sent to me by other folks. I do not have the military information about Zebulon but I certainly would like to if it wouldn't be too much trouble. How can I participate in receiving the information? Thanks, Gene Essman

    2. Dan Bruce
    3. Just to add to Dan Rainwater's note, migrations of entire communities, or what seems to be entire communities were common around this time. New territories opened up and many adventurous families packed up and moved in large groups from one area to another to grab land grants. That's one reason why you find many family surnames intermarrying in one geography, and if you trace a single family to another geography, you find the same familiar surnames there as well. 3. Gene, Did I say his place of birth was GA? My file shows that Zebulon was born in 1823 in Spartanburg co., SC. I had to move some things around in my outline for it to fit in the e-mail message, so I may have messed it up. Your great grandmother's name may very well have been Marget, and not Margaret. Census takers took liberties in recording names, sometimes putting down what they believed the correct spelling was, and sometimes spelling the name exactly as the individual being interviewed would pronounce the name. Most folks being interviewed couldn't read or write, so how their name was spelled was of little consequence to them. My great-great grandfather, Daniel, settled in Yell County, Arkansas. I would be interested if you have done any investigating in that neck of the woods. The time period when my family was in Arkansas is still a black hole for me, and I figure it may take a trip to Arkansas before I can fill that empty space in. By the way, your Zebulon has an interesting military background. If you don't have any info in this area, I'll be happy to pass along what little I do have on Zebulon during the Civil War. 3. Hal, The Rainwater store is located in Rex, Clayton Co., GA. It is about 5 miles from my home in Jonesboro, GA. Is was first opened by Clinton Rainwater who is my ggguncle. The store was sold to somebody outside the Rainwater family a few years ago....but is still operated as "The Rainwater Store". When I first moved into this county 30 years ago, people would ask me if I am related to the Rainwater store people. At the time I didn't know and found that I am within the last 5 years when my aunt and I started researching our family. Good to hear from you. 3. Hi Susan, thanks for info.....here's a tidbit that you may or may not have re: Elizabeth Rainwater that married Isaac Roberts. For many years I corresponded with a John Roberts who descended from Isaac Roberts......he sent me doc's showing that Isaac had first married Elizabeth Norfleet and had seven children. Elizabeth Norfleet then died in 1842. He then married Elizabeth Rainwater and they moved to Bedford IN where Elizabeth's sister Nancy lived. Nancy was married to William Roy of either Pulaski Co. In addition to Isaac's seven children they had three sons; William Roberts Nov 1844, Abraham b. 1847; and a third son in 1849. Isaac took sick and apparently died. John Roberts states that Elizabeth kept and operated the Roberts farm with help from her sisters, Nancy Rainwater Roy (who was twin to my John Rainwater)....and apparently the oldest Rainwater sister, Lydia ( had lived with Nancy for some years to take care of children) from Isaac's death in 1849 until Elizabeth married Zachariah Loveall of Pulaski Co., KY at Bedford IN. on 15 Oct 1854. He was son of Zachariah Loveall and Elizabeth Anderson Kelsey. They had children: Miles, b. 18 Sept 1856 who married Hattie Carttick Jun 1887; Kelsey, b. 22 April 1857, who marr first Clara Smith and second Mattie Seymore; Zachariah Jr., 22 Nov 1859 who married Jesse Carttick; and Lydia (no other dtata available). Elizabeth thus raised Isaac's 7 Children and her own 7 children. A note indicates that when the Roberts farm was sold, Elizabeth divided the proceeds among the 10 Roberts childen prior to her marriage to Z Loveall. In 1861 or 1862 the Loveall Family which now included Lydia, helping with the children, moved to Fairbault Co., MN......Shortly after arriving the younger Lydia died and is buried next to her Aunt Lydia (1802-1886) at Rice Cemetery near Wells, MN. Records indicate that Zachariah died about 1891 and Elizabeth in 1896 but place of burial has not been discovered. John Roberts says he has obit from local newspaper but it reports death only and he feels that burial was probably on the home place near SE of Wells. Thought you might like to have this data as background material and to relate what happened to Lydia Rainwater. Also answers questions as to Nancy Rainwater Roy....BTW I still have a Cousin, Carly Roy, Bethelridge, KY who was dau of Hetty Rainwater and Dillard Barber, whose husband connects back to the William Roy above....... Hal, from windy & cooool Northern California!

    3. Sorry, there is a misunderstanding. I said that the Rainwater clan settled in this area of GA in the 1830's. Most all of the Rainwaters that settled in the Campbell Co. area of GA were born in the Spartenburg area. They then migrated to GA. And pleas remember, not all came to GA in the 1830's....some moved in later. Your records are correct...Zebulon was born in Spartenburg. Gene, I hope this helps clear up my email. Regarding other information in your mail. Zebulon being a Methodist minister is interesting, because the Rainwaters who pasted through GA have a very rich tradition in the Baptist Church. Several Baptist churches in GA were founded by Rainwaters. I would be interested in any pica's you might have of Rainwater related info.
